the shipyard had a visit from the wife and mother in law for an update on the build, after the oohs and how did you do that questions, I stupidly pointed to the lower deck and said that's where the officers cabin and captains pantry would be-but I'm not going to build/show them-in stereo they said "oh thats a shame" so guess what I,ve been doing the last two nights.

got very fed up with stern timbers, so I thought I would try my hand at something different to take my mind of them

first attempt at some scrolls and carving, I did them first in mahogany then in lime and now in castello boxwood, the first two just wouldn't hold an edge, I think I will need to practise a bit more

Thanks Siegfried, ofencer and Albert, I have added carlings in the area of the cabins and dry fitted to mark out the positions of the gun deck beams

Another question for the forum from the archaeology, photos courtesy of Yann von Arnim

This large piece of metal was found at the rear of the ship around where it was dynamite in the 60's, I think it is a stern timber reinforcing, any body have any other suggestions

It is quite large 2.7 m long and 1.2 m across the top

I thought I would try and make this piece to see how it looked on the model, so at great expense and time here it is, including the bolts

turn it over and offer it up to the transoms and it is nearly a perfect fit, with a little bending and adjustment, this makes me particularly happy as I'm obviously deciphering the plans reasonably accurately

I have also got my head around the stern timbers this weekend and now have a set of stern timbers  with step transom and the transom of the quarterdeck, I morticed the short timbers into the bottom of the transom, I'm not sure if this is correct but seems to work well

the rudder was made some months ago out of five pieces as per ATOS Diana using mahogany for the centre and elm (pine) for the outer replaceable pieces, I test fitted it with the transoms to make sure everything lined up, I also had a good weekend and finished all of the gun deck beams, so I tried the rudder again with a temporary tiller under the beams and the temporary tiller above

Your instinct to mortise the counter timbers to the wing transom is correct: the original ships had shallow scores to locate these timbers. The T-straps are usually one-piece affairs, though.

Druxey do you agree this is where the piece would go, my archaeologist colleagues in Mauritius don't agree and think it is an external piece, I have explained that there are no external pieces like this that I am aware of and it fits nicely on the transoms

I will make it again in brass in one piece once everyone agrees that is where it should go, I think it is the curve on the tee piece that is throwing them off, but the ship was burnt first and then dynamited in the 60's, so that could have some bearing on it

Thanks for looking in, The spelling on the plans from the NNM is Syrius with a Y, the modern spelling is with an I Sirius, the spelling is also mentioned in gardeners heavy frigate, the captain at the time of the battle of grand port and subsequent sinking was Samuel Pym, Previous to that it was William prowse if that helps

The lower deck cabins and captains pantry are now hidden away under the beams but they will all have to come out to finish all the things that come up through this deck from below like the fore and sheet bitts

I also need to make the wooden and iron standards for the lower deck before it is closed up, two of the iron ones go on each side inside the cabins apparently

Those T-straps actually ran across the wing transom and up the forward face of the counter timbers. Your photo (post 42) has it placed upside-down. The curve fits on the lower counter area.

Yes, more or less. There is a photo of this area of Victory that show these T-straps in place. It is shown in Longridge's Anatomy of Nelson's Ships, Plate 19, opposite page 100. I can't post this photo as it may infringe copyright. Hopefully you have access to a copy if you don't already own one. (You should!)

Have you considered adding those copper nails to the build in some fashion?  While at the same time preserving them in their intact form.  Again, great archeology and build.  Very enjoyable to read.  Gary

Welcome Gary, I have tried to copy the rudder bolts and screws on my rudder and have done copper bolts on all the gundeck beams as they should be, the rudder has two round bolts and two square headed screws except the spectacle plate which I've only done three on as scale problem not four as found in Mauritius

I thought another change in direction would keep the interest up, so using the ATOS Diana I had a go at one of the elm tree pumps

I made the forked stanchions out of brass filed to shape the folded over and soldered the base into one piece which I then filed down to size

I then soldered the mounting block to the band around the top of the pump, there should be a little plate at the bottom as well that the forked stanchion sits in but its rather small so I'm not sure how I'm going to make that yet, made a temporary handle out of lime, I will replace with boxwood later, there is an eye through the handle for the wire that goes down the pump
