Hi John, I used regular double sided tape you can find anywhere, craftstore, supermarket etc.
I use the Scotch brand.

Gentlemen and ladies (have to include them too),

I need your input regarding belaying pins, should I use the brass pins as they are or should I go with the blackened?
I have plenty of each.
And yes there is some touch up to be done before they are in place.

As discussed in previous postings the question has been what material to use for glass pane.
I looked into the super-thin glass, I am curious how they will hold up for transport with USPS or UPS?
Then the sheets were rather large and not so cheap either.
However, next to on the work bench I had an old billing envelope with that address window, and I thought to myself..... "hmm, maybe that can be used for the pane I am looking for?!"
Sure enough, it's clear enough to reveal detail underneath.
So, yes that became my window pane. Works great with CA as well.

John, I found a company making microscope cover on their website I they listed 
Microscope Cover Glass - 24mm x 40mm x 0.14mm Thick (Number 1 Thickness)

This was the thinnest they had available.
One package of 82 each would cost you 36 dollars! phwee.....

Black is a more common color for steel. The black pins aren't true to the prototype but they definitely look nice. The brass looks good on a ship designed to look pretty. Especially with natural wood finishes. Not a true model though. Brass would require some sort of coating or it will tarnish over time.

You could maybe resell to others in need of windows and recoup your cost. Set aside 10 or so for your own use and sell the rest for $1 each.

My Admiral didn't recommend the glass. They shatter way to easy.

She's been in the medical field for 35 years. She recommended super thin plexiglass or acetate film for the windows we  need.

Interesting. I bought some of that Scotch double sticky tape and it was about useless. Only good for holding paper. I try to stick something down and it just pops off. Maybe I got a bad or outdated roll.

I eventually found some tape at a hardware store that worked well. It was sold for mounting things but was thin. I also bought some fabric tape to try. It says it's for "permanent" mounting and I worry about it being too strong.

Looking good, Per.  I lean toward the blackened pins as well.  Interesting, in my vintage of the kit, the provided pins were the white metal variety, and I just stuck them in the rail as is.  I didn't go back through your entire log to see if the brass pins were supplied or aftermarket, but I did notice a difference in our box art.  Mine is old enough to be labeled "Canadian Fishing Schooner" while yours is "Bluenose".

The part number from ModelExpo is MS1401B(r) according to my part list.

Bought a package of 150 brass via ModelExpo amazon site.... price 23 dollar (free shipping)

And yes, I leaning towards the black ones as well, the shiny brass doesn't look right.

hello Per.......catching up on your progress   I wish I had checked in sooner......I use a variety of acetate for glass......I've even used the film out of floppy discs.  my favorite though comes from the plastic packaging that a lot of products come in these days....you can harvest a lot of flat pieces,  but if you need a special curved piece,  what you need can be found there too.  there are a few products out there,  but what I use is Testor's window cement and maker,  which works well for port holes.  it dries totally clear so you can't see it when gluing a window in place.

 

I'm a brass fan,  but I do agree that the blackened belaying pins look better.  tarnish will occur if you have high humidity or haven't got the model in a case.  every once in a while,  you may find bags of silica in boxes....keep 'em . if you have your plans and stuff in boxes throw 'em in with 'em.....it will help preserve them from humidity.   your progress looks very good.......

Will have to look it up on youtube, and see how it works.

Hi Per, I finally tracked down that build log with the glass recommendation. The guy who's a weathering guru. Here's a link to the page about glass. It's worth browsing the whole log. Lot's of tips and fantastic work. Be sure to check out the finished pictures.

A long time ago..... back in the stone ages I learned working with silver soldering.
In those days it was small items but I noticed today when I did it for the first time in 26 years it's not that easy.

But I am satisfied with the outcome, I made the small rings too.
Now I am hooked with soldering I do look forward to do more of it.
Once blackened I think it will be okay.

I am to leave the bowsprit natural in front and white inboards.

Worked to make one of the hooks......   Oboy! I have to say...... when I shot the picture I realized how coarse the items are.

But to the regular naked eye at a distance of 16" (40cm) it is perfect. You can't see the imperfections.

"Macro" (or as it should be micro in true photography) surely can reveal flaws in material.

The hook itself measure about 4mm overall length.

Block and hook are both from Syren Model Company.

Can't imagine other companies quality.
I am to replace Model Shipways blocks and non-existence hooks with items long time ago ordered from SMC (Syren Model Company)
Model Shipways blocks are about 1/3 larger than SMC, so just imagine how bad they would be in the picture.
I will do an upload tomorrow, for comparison.

The black cord inserted in the hook and surrounding the block is regular sewing thread. Which will be replace.

Hi Per you could but this .006" glass from Clover House for a lot less.

I have surely not payed enough attention to this girl, but in the background changes and movement forward has occured.

One area is the cabin furniture, the skylight gave me some headache about centering. Then I thought about tape, this way I could get the skylight perfect in all locations.

I have also shaped the masts (bottom parts).

Once shaped the will get a coat of pine varnish and clear varnish on top of that.

Re about other projects in the background - it's like a proper boat yard I'd say. There are always several ongoing jobs at any given time.

Bluenose looks good. Tall and proud masts also. I guess, when you look at sailing photos of these era you can get a appreciation for the sheer amount of canvas and actually how tall the masts were (are). Especially if you can spot a rigrat handling the topsail when tacking.
