WOW!!

Is the first time in my life that I see the building of a ship out of cowbones! I have seen them at the museums of course but I´ve never seen a model step by step. Amazing job and very good explanations. Where you get from all the bones? How you treat them to get them so clean to start to cut? Do you boiled them?

Best wishes!

Daniel.

Free watch on deck

After the ship was finally planked, I could attach the side pockets.
Here are a few detail shots that have arisen during the progress of construction.

Robert,

Were those inlaid floors drawn with pen and ink or actual inlay? Also, I can't tell if they're bone or wood from the photo.

Greg

Hi Greg,

pen and ink???????........hhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmm........... I pretend as if I have not seen now, what you've written <_<

the entire ship all visible parts are made from bone ;)

The marquetry in the floors are made of bone and ebony

Hello to all

I'm sorry, but I can not show the construction of the inlaid.
When I did this job, I did not think it would be interesting to others. *shameonme*
You have to remember, I've done the work 15 years ago. At a time, there were no or very few forums for ship modellers.
And the photographing was expensive.
I've done a lot of photos, but still only if a part was finished.
Now looking back, it is a pity for it, but unfortunately too late to change.
But I will indemnify with more pictures.

I promised

Ebony and ivory...they're together in perfect harmony (apologies to McCartney and Wonder). Sorry about the slight, Robert. I should have known it was the real deal.

One day I would like to come to Germany to see your models and Miniature Wonderland (http://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/)

Hello Robert,

I just found your log.

What a marvelous ship, you are a true craftsman.

It's the first time I see a ship being build made out of bones.

Your inlay floors and carvings are absolutely beautiful.

I will follow with great interest.

Thank you for sharing and take care,

Anja

Olá;

One question springs to mind.

I'm a butcher and one thing I remember is the penetrating smell of bone when using a saw.

How about that? Any smell? Or is it because you've "aged" the bone that there is no smell at all?

At the time when the bone was cut to stock, (1993) i have 1 month stunk like a soup pot. It was indescribable.
The only means against was to shower shower and shower again.
Nevertheless, the skin on my hands and arms have smelled of old bones. It took weeks up to the smell disappeared

Have Fun

Now for the movie ............ .................................. ääääähhheehe the building report

Usually here comes the chick with the cold drinks and the great ..................................... Eyes. What have you been thinking again ........................ piglets

During the planking of the boat I have taken no pictures.  (yesiknowbymyselfitspity)
The material has been lost in the editing room.   (whobelives) :(

In the first photo you can see how the frames are bent into shape after cooking. For this, the strips can be pinned on the form block for the boat and after drying they stay in shape. They are then glued. The frames are divided into two. The floor timbers are prepared in situ. The preformed ribs could be fit without problems.

Then remove the sloppiness and make new: Customize grating clean. Gunwale back down and re-done, because wrong, this time with oarlocks. Set the Thwartknee to the correct position.

The Thole-boards were a real challenge. Tiny, shaped in three directions, with stop bar!
Then the fitting and final assembly this time right Gunwale.

The flagpole:

The flagpole with 4 hex taper is made from the blank. Then from the 4 hex to 8 hex, and now  in the lathe.
