Denis: Yes that rail cutaway is part of the cutaway - might be overkill on my part - here are a couple more photos, including one from the outer hull.

===========================

Started work on the stairs as well as the chainplates. Decided to use Amati parts for the deadeyes. Learned something. Apart from the fiddly business of wrapping these small strap rings around the deadeyes,

I also knew that those brass parts should be black. Did not want to first dip all of those bits into Brass Black liquid, and then put them all togethre - way too messy - was just going to leave all of those bright.

Then by chance decided to dunk a wood deadeye into the Brass Black solution - well (I sort of thought so) but Brass Black did not also blacken the wood deadeye. So then just dipped all of the completed assemblies into the solution. Rinsed and you can see the results - very acceptable.

Thanks for the likes and just stopping by.....

Frank: The knightheads will go through the upper deck and attach to the upper gun deck floor. Also need to figure out what kinds of  details to those four. The ship was first rate - so certainly the knightheads were sculpted as well.  BTW the kit provided pins are way too large. Will toss those - and gold metal no less.

Hi Mates,

Been away from the shipyard for a couple of weeks. Added a few minor bits – but first

Dave: thanks very much as an avid follower of your cross-section – very touching - thanks again

Federicoaa: I looked briefly at the rigging sheets some time ago, as I am close to adding pinrails and blocks to the deck (no rigging at this point). Yes, you are right some lines do not have locations noted – My solution is in the last photo. This build will not go into any competition haha- so line locations are not SO important. That said somehow someway the Admiral will notice any line/pin errors hahaha

Ferit: I think that you posted a question about how hull stairs could be climbed. That has been a question for me as well. Found very little at “Google University” – but there are apparently two methods – one of which I photographed from the 74 Gun ship bible  book 2 (Jean Boudroit)

With regard to stair alignments – Chose, the easier of the two solutions. well it is what it is.

E.J.  from your log - great idea for side skid contours.

Cheers,

Hi Michael,

Glad I visited your log today.

Looking at the photos, I forgot that I had one of those contour metal thingy.

I had it hidden away, and I pulled it out for future use. I know it will come in handy sooner or later on my build :)

Your cross section is looking excellent!

Thank Dave and Frank - mates thanks for the likes!!

Continuing upper deck work. Added pin rails - rear rail and railing are not attached. Will add, much later,  rear railing after I add hail and yard lines. Need to add deck blocks, rig carriages as well.

Tried to use my Proxxon lathe to add details to knightheads - abject failure so improvised with left-over stanchion bits instead.

Cheers

Denis: Thanks much appreciated - wanted to add just a bit to the visual -

Regarding pins they are too short and a bit too large. Will let that go, as the rope coils will cover much of the scale issues IMO

Working on carriages now. Very fiddly and time consuming - so tiny -, since I will only have three cannons on the main deck decided to take the extra time to fully rig them.

That said I see that my trunnion cuts are too far forward on the carriages. Will need to remove those upper rows of wood, add new bits then re-groove further aft. Need to also make three quoins to fit under the guns.

I don’t think that I will articulate the capsquares with keys and eyebolts. Did that for the lower gun deck carriages – totally lost work. Fun experiment, but Hmmmm

Regarding the guns – just playing around – might un-blacken those rings – at least the ones at the breeches – just for their look – certainly incorrect historically. Might add rammers and shot triangled boxes. Will post when all is installed and completed. It will be a while haha…

As always mates thanks so much for looking in and posting comments and likes……

Hi Mates,

Martin – you are way too kind – big thanks

==================

Update on deck guns –work in progress (paint details need to be fixed along with other bits) First so much for thinking ahead – did not even think about room on deck when I added rear train tackles to the carriages. Grrr

1.thumb.jpg.4fbfbd684fa8d4060d2de9ec400fbbac.jpg

As I did for the upper deck guns tried to also add the look of the capsquare eyebolt and keys to the carriages. Decided to at least add those to the three main deck guns – really simple to do.

2.thumb.jpg.4496f7b20d91f1e8808a8239114591b4.jpg

Then thought to add a challenge by also adding chainlinks that attach the keys to the carriages.

Went to Michael’s Art supplies looking for a miniature jewelry chain that might work. Bit of paint and “looked ok” needs “touch up”.

3.thumb.jpg.df1058cd4a629ea7e17668726a1a5d47.jpg4.thumb.jpg.7f19aff86bf9621bf76cf368b7d3a051.jpg5.thumb.jpg.d91255fa8b77a73d2d79476bcf4714a8.jpg6.thumb.jpg.02c0064956004023ea1b71806f8d41b6.jpg7.thumb.jpg.75c18599adb84a2b325d02f9ddacf8c6.jpg8.thumb.jpg.86cc059834f72b57b61b3a9265cb5bf1.jpg

Next - made a jig template of sorts to measure, cut and attach second eyebolts to the breeching tackles – will be an easy install – just secure the guns and slip the eyebolts into pre-drilled holes. The jig makes adjusting and knotting other rope to eyebolts very easy

9.thumb.jpg.8e966127041af72eea6c7dfc5f4098f0.jpg

Oh yes – got creative with the barrels – added a flat clear-coat to the sanded brass but now looks like flat gold paint – not happy with that – but oh well too late. I did a similar thing with my last build – scraping the emblems on the guns then adding a clearcoat –so faded the look almost disappeared so there is hope. I know that the brass rings on those guns is not remotely “correct”.

Indeed, great details. That chain for the pins is something rarely seen and really makes this a unique build. As always, Michael, well done! :)

Hi Mates,

E.J., Patrick, Frank – thanks for the kind thoughts

------------------

Completed the installation of the upper deck furnishings.  Here are a few updated photos.

Think that the sponge pole is a bit out of scale – may fix.

With that fourth carriage decided to leave it unfinished placing it close to the unfinished gun port area.

Two of those train tackles that I could not make use of (made a notations in previous post) instead worked out real well for use as gun tackles (wrapped the ropes as it would be in a “stored” position).

As always thanks for your likes, notations and just dropping by.

Hi mates,

Minor updates - completed the hull gun doors, added deck support stanchions along with some other bits here and there.

Decided to use kit provided frames, but make the doors.(happy that all the lights are still working !!)

Now onto the mast, yards etc...

Thanks for you continued interest in this very slow going log.

Hi Michael,

Nice job!

Interesting to note that the eyelets and rigging to close the gun lids (on the inside) were off to the side. Was that specific to this ship? Or have I been wrong to be putting the eyelet in the center on my past builds?

Love the look with the lights!

Congrats,

Frank

Frank,

It’s my error. I had many files available to look at (see one below) did it wrong – Gave a look at my Vasa (all correct) – weird that I would attach the lanyards off to one side for this one. Easy fix – thanks for the diplomatic “heads up”

Was goofing around last night took a few of the lights - here’s one I like. Seems as if I will need to do some dusting off before building its case.

PS: I had, sometime back, occasion to speak with the owner of Evan Designs LED’s. Suggested that he contact MSW and possibly become an add sponsor (mentioned the 33k membership) – Still don’t see him listed in the sidebar – hmmm.

Cheers,

Hi Mates,

So appreciate the nice comments! – thanks for your continued interest.

Work in progress;

Topmast crosstree & main lower platform; kit provided bits were useful as templates.

I know that the lower platform should be painted black (as well as ship hull trim red/white etc….) but I prefer the natural look of woods - crosstree done, platform getting there.

The mast and all of those attached side support bits will be a first time effort for me.

PS: Using Boudroit book three 74 Gun Ship as a guide - yes French ship but similar timeline.

Minor update;

I discovered (previous build) that using black nylon fishing line is an acceptable way of adding “in scale” nails to some needed areas.

Finished up the platform still need to add the ten deadeyes. Now focusing on the lower main mast.

Used the kit provided dowel, but used the kit bibbs only as a template. Again went to the Boudroit’s book for a guide in adding some extra details. Bibbs should be made up of several pieces of lumber. My results are much simpler than what is in his book. (platform not attached - just for a look)

For the cheeks I used pre-scored deck plank sheets. Easier to bend when wet. Now need to see how to properly rope these three cheeks around the mast. Some references have two sets of mast bracing ropes, then cheeks are added above pre-installed ropes and then an outer layer of ropes is added. Hmmm? Need to work that out.

Then on to the mast cap, and other needed blocks.
