Fish Ponds

well that took a lot longer than anticipated, about 150 cuts of strip wood, took me most of the day, but for now it looks ok.

I still gave to adapt the bottom board to sit tight to the deck, and then see if i can simulate handles, or cut slots out to enable lifting, and then weather, and put back into the same position they were removed from, Real world DIY tomorrow so hopefully by the weekend

good evening everyone

the fish pond slats have still to be stained, but the gutter boards are now fitted and for the photo i have just placed the bits and pieces in roughly where they are to be fitted, bu at present i am missing a piece the seals the stbd bulkhead under the waleback, which is a real pain as i have been looking for a week now

Good morning everyone

i was reading my own log last night, and i said i would open her up, somehow along the way I seam to have forgotten about it, is it time to rethink the idea, or just go for it?

NOT MY PHOTO, not even my build

Well, that is an enormous amount of work in addition to finishing up the outside of your model. Then, how will a visible see-thru hull will fit with your diorama?

CUT AWAY ABANDONED

Been away a couple of days, and LOL not because i was sulking, but been planning more on how to display this monster when completed

these were the photos that convinced myself that at this stage the cutaway was not going to work,  the boiler is scaled down by about 10 to 15% and the damage required to fit is not worth the trouble. therefore i have finally abandoned the idea, the diorama gets the proper go ahead

I think Popeye's right, Kevin.  A cutaway model needs to be planned from the ground up.

Perhaps for your next model you could build something like this model of M.V. 'Kingsville'.  :D The model is (or was) on display in the Norwegian Maritime Museum.

Good morning John, i have seen this photo before, gave me some great ideas last time i saw it

Good evening everyone

lots i dont understand about this build, there is so much more that could have been put down in the instructions, the forward gallows need to set so that the centre is above the middle of the rubbing bars, but they are not in the same position both sides so i have put them in place identical both sides, so yet another compromise, same goes for the position of the fish pond stations, they had to be re positioned tonight annoying as i had them all ready to be fitted

oh hum, other than that loving this build, tomorrow i want to sort the ladder to the wale deck and get the mast fitted

good evening everyone

i see the light at the end of the tunnel, its getting brighter, and no its not a train in the opposite direction

having spent ages messing around i decided to ensure the mast lights still worked, and they did, how ever, i am unsure of the lens colours to use, as i believe they were changeable, i have also get to sort out the night photos properly to show them off better

IMG_6398.JPG.2ecbd7c790cea839cff5e1ed05d045ff.JPG

the ladder to the wale-back is now in place as are the braces to support the fwd gallows ,

is that the proper rake for the mast?   I see you have it shimmed.   if not,  then perhaps adjusting the length of those two braces for the gallows will allow the mast collar to sit flush.   if the rake is correct,  and seeing that adjusting the collar itself looks impossible,  perhaps closing up the three sides will enable it to appear flush with the deck.   your progress continues to look really good :)

Hi Kevin, nice job!
Regarding your lights, the following was copied from the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea:

Rule 26

Fishing Vessels

  • (a)
A vessel engaged in fishing, whether underway or at anchor, shall exhibit only the lights and shapes prescribed in this Rule.
  • (b)
A vessel when engaged in trawling, by which is meant the dragging through the water of a dredge net or other apparatus used as a fishing appliance, shall exhibit:
    • (i) two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being green and the lower white, or a shape consisting of two cones with their apexes together in a vertical line one above the other,

    • (ii) a masthead light abaft of and higher than the all-round green light; a vessel of less than 50 metres in length shall not be obliged to exhibit such a light but may do so,

    • (iii) when making way through the water, in addition to the lights prescribed in this paragraph, sidelights and a sternlight.

Hope that helps!

thank you Andy, lovely to hear from you, are you and family ok?

being set in a diorama i wont need lights, other than to show they work for pre sea checks, but i could at least get the lens covers colour correct

no its not the correct rake, i have just been doen stairs and put it on the display shelf, and it is raked to far back, i thought it was about rightin comparison with photo and the after mast, which is about right, the angle i took is not correct, so tomorrow i will remove some of the chim and make it look better,

the rake to be set  is not in the instructions

here is what it should be like NOT MY PHOTO

good evening everyone

from the previous photo's you can see a wedge under the mast , this was not required
IMG_6405.jpg
this angle was to much so today i sorted it  out, what happened was, i required a shim to fit the main mast, as per the instructions, and did the same for the foremast, not thinking that the deck was already providing the required angle, wedge removed, two part epoxy and pins made it more hard work than was needed, im happier now its now fixed back in place

another fix sorted

Waleback fitting out

getting the pointy end over the finishing line, the  railings are still to be trimmed to size, nothing is fitted yet, i may use this area as a dumping fround when in the diorama setting, boxes, bikes, ropes, lol my mind runs riot with ideas, actually doing it is a different thing altogether

my next build will be the Talisman Paddle steamer in cutaway, having failed to do it on here as promised
