Thanks Patrick. I use this pdf since beginning of the project. The list of artefacts are very useful.

Yes, there a lot of tutorials on YT. I have done a course as well on Udemy. Its not hard to understand, but its hard to train to get the skill for this kind of work.
My "poor" CNC-Skill is selfmade. You learn it when you do it.

Dear Oliver,

First, my congratulations for this great work!

I'm trying to do my first admiralty-style model and it is la Belle too.

I just started drawing it with Rhino (first try too... although I got some experience with Catia !).

I was comparing the video of Bernard Huc and your work.

I got an issue with the sternpost, deadwood and rabbet:

- Huc seemed to reduce the width of the entire upper part of the queel (where the frames are set) to that of the lower part of the sternpost (around 4 mm), where the garboard will end. Same thing for the rear deadwood part.

- On the contrary, you seem to keep the width of the queel to around 7 mm almost all along its length, with the exception of a narrow rabbet. However, the lower part of the sternport still must be reduced to 4mm. How do you manage the transition? On the photographs, it seems that you tapered the sternport as well as the deadwood and gradually transition from 4mm to 7mm the width of the queel from stern to bow, as the rabbet gets deeper.

Could you enlighten me about that?

The first option seem tempting as I want to cut the parts using a CNC machine and that would be much easier...

Thank you for your reading and kind answer;

Best regards,

Kranck

PS: as far as CNC milling is concerned, may I mention the Vectric Aspire pice of software, which makes engraving rather simple as compared to Blender, for those of us that do not master the latter.

PPS: As a resident of Germany, do you have a favorite shop for wood? I can't help but noticing your pearwood (?) is beautiful

@Kranck

Thank you for your interest in my project. Maybe you can show picture of the problem. Its´more easier to locate it.

I started as well some tests in Rhino but as a genetic Catia-User i choosed to use my skills in this program and to continue with it.
I checked a lot of CAM-Programs, as well the products from Aspire. I can´t remember but there was some points contra and my desicion was for Deskproto.
I think the fourth or fifth axis.... i dont know more.
My wood i bought on ebay in Germany. The name of the seller is Holzkarle.

Regards

Oliver

Hi,

Thanks for the anwer.

I put some colors on one of your log photographs then...

Huc (as well as riccardo mattera there https://l-arsenale.forumattivo.com/t7-la-belle-1684-scala-1-24-di-riccardo-mattera)  seem to reduce the width of the area highlighted by black rectangles, i.e the sternpost, deadwood and the whole upper part of the queel.

On the contrary you seem to reduce the width only on the sternpost, rear part of the queel and deadwood (black dots) and then gradually return to full width (red dots) on the queel while engraving a deeper rabbet.

I don't know if i'm making sense...

Hi,

No. 1, the keel, is reduced as well.
No. 2, this area is as well reduced to the bottom to get the common line to the keel.
No.3 is not reduced in my modell. I have there a constant thickness in the whole area in the sternpost. I´think the "line" of the rabbet should be constant if you have constant thickness from the planking. The sternpost can be reduced, but the optical benefit is to small for the work, because the gaps and angle are to small in this area.

My rabbet on the Keel an the stem could be deeper and more sharper. First model and first try.... you learn a lot of things, but for the next project.

Looks like any number of machines that come out of China.  They do need some tweeking.   Have a look at LittleMachineshop guide on small lathes (attached below).   They also have a variety of documents in their learning center.

I have a question concerning La Belle's armament:

It is said (only according to Wikipedia, I know), that the Spaniards recovered five guns , when they discovered the wreckage. Two further guns were excavated by the historians and one gun was presumed missing.

That brings the total number to 8, but all reconstructions show her being pierced for only six. Were two guns carried as cargo or is there an error in the reconstructions or in my brain?

Could those extra two have been carried topside?   Or they might have ballast but those were usually damaged guns.

Swivel guns were mentioned separately in the article.

The whole section reads like this:

"On December 25, 1686, a Spanish expedition [...] left Veracruz to sail along the Gulf Coast. On April 4, they reached Matagorda Bay and dispatched several canoes to explore the area. 3 miles from their ship, they discovered La Belle, which they described as a "broken ship" with three fleur-de-lys on her stern.

The Spanish salvaged two swivel guns and five cannons from the ship, as well as the anchor, some cordage, and the masts, which they made into oars."

@Kranck

Sorry, i was offline from the shipbuilding for a time. I use this milling machine. Its a self-made combination because in my eyes there is no milling machine in the market for our type of work.
The MF70 is a very good machine, but with limitations. But for small parts it´s a good choice. The same is with the Unimat. If you work on bigger projects, you will run as well in limitations.
