now that I have the port side rails,  I can get those on.

the posts were stained and cemented in place.......it still needs to be pulled in on the port side and the beam on the underside of the deck.   I'll cover the deck edge with a piece of thin stock,  and clean it up.

I need to do the others,  anyway :)

post-612-0-48414500-1382105020_thumb.jpg

the stern cap rails are cemented on at this point,  making sure that the pin rack is level.

the third hull rail is added..........

the cap rails are really going to be a neat thing to do........the double step down to the main cap rail,  and then the curve up to the fore cap rail.......I just hope I allowed enough material.   in my scrap bag,  I found some 3/16 flat stock and cut them to the width of the plywood sections.   then,  they were wet down and set up on a jig to create the bend.   another jig will ne needed to cut the excess wood from the bulwarks.

post-612-0-69422900-1382105529_thumb.jpg

I think the fore cap rails will need to be done first,  so I can get a better idea of how much material to remove from the lower step-down.  along the bulwarks,  I will add the extra strips,  for better anchor points.  the stronger,  the better.

Maybe it's just me, but your cap rails look a bit on the wide side. She looks ok, but she might look even better with them narrowed down a bit. Like I said though, it could just be me ;)

kits are something.......aren't they Andy.    they give you all the parts,  and you put them together.   they look kind of wide to me as well,  but I figured that  the cap rail and the pin rail,  being made into one part like this,  accounted for it.   the thickness of the bulwark posts and the outer hull is 5 mm wide.........the cap parts are 10mm wide.   I'm not sure if I threw foresight into this,  but I left a reasonable overhang along the outside edge.   when I have all the rails on,  I do plan on sanding the edge down to even and contour the rails to the hull.....this may remove some of it.  I also plan on rounding up the stern a little........I really don't think it's that square.   there are a few other aspects that don't follow the lines of the actual ship.........the most glaring one,   is that there are three steps to the stern,  and not two as the kit suggests.   if this was a POF kit,  other aspects could have been built in,  instead of being done as a sub assembly.   the fact that there are quite a few parts missing,  puts an added chink in the armor.   I have a few pictures of the ship,  but while I'm in the process of doing this,  I'll look into it some more.  perhaps I can come up with some more definitive pictures.

thanks for looking in and the good word  ;)

If it was up to me, I'd try and bring them down to about 5mm wide, leave about 1/2mm overhang outside and maybe just a little overhang on the frames. Anyway, that's all up to you so you can do what you feel you need to.

Hey... you gonna get that Goth finished or what? :P

Hi Popeye,

Good job on your Half Moon, and I agree that the side rails are better brown or natural. Black just wouldn't seem right.

However, I tend to agree with Andy, those cap and pin rails do seem a little wide. I guess you have to think, 'If I thinned them down a bit, would it affect anything else?', but you also have to consider how wide they're going to look with the coils attached. The crew won't quite be brushing against the mast, but...  ;)

kits...........ya gotta love'em!   .....no wonder why I like to bash the hell out of them  ;)   I look at models of this ship,  and they all show cap rails.........not as wide as these are,  but they have rails,  none the less.   the fact of the matter is..............the ship doesn't have any!

I've seen these pictures........but I wasn't working on that particular aspect........so,  I guess I overlooked it

.........and yet another pho-par takes hold!   not the end of the world by any stretch ;)

yes, Andy......I think your going to get your wish........to the Goth!!!!!!

let's huddle............moe,  you up the center,  and try to intercept.   Larry,   go around the side and try to flank.   Curley,...........you go long!

I'm going to rip them up!  don't know what I'm going to do about the stern cap just yet........but there will be NO rails.   point well taken gentlemen......don't know how I could have missed this bit of detail.  it ain't going to be pretty.........but I'll be sure to show the gory details......gotta take the dog out before the admiral has a COW!

Ah, the joys of modeling.  We think we are doing thing correctly only to look at some picture we’ve seen a hundred time and have one of those, “Oh, Sh** “,  moments.

Hi Popeye,

Your build is looking great regardless of the whole caprail issue. And on that, there is one of the dangers of having photos of an actual ship or replica available. If you didn't have those photos, you might be perfectly happy!  And as far as kits and those "Oh, Sh**" moments, as Bob put it, I've been working on a scratch project and seem to have a lot more of those moments than ever before. You just can't escape them no matter what...

I couldn't agreee more Bob and Clare :)     I have a picture......I'll post it later.......scary,  but it's a stark reality of what I'm going to have to do.  heck,  I may even be able to add in that extra step that's missing.   after I posted last,  I took one of the parts panels and cut it up into posts.....the rest,  I'll leave up to the next update.  :)

Popeye,

The Moon looks great.  Excellent color choices and perfect planking... SWEET!!!!!

On breaking wood.... next time, add some heat to the mix.  Even with not-straight grain, it can be bent if you add heat and go slow.

Wow! You are an absolute machine Popeye!

I love the staining job. I never knew colour could change the appearance so dramatically.

I'll be following this one with interest, watching you solve problems and scratch build is teaching me a lot!

Thank you

Sorry about the rails popeye =(   But, kudos to tackling it and ripping them off.  I usually need a couple of hours of cool down after I do that - hurts to rip stuff off a great looking ship!  But NO doubt it will be all the better for it!

thank you Rowan........your just in time then........finding out that she really doesn't have the normal cap rails,  like other ships,  is a bit of an eye opener.   it's a good thing I didn't get them all on and find this out.   I have an idea......I'll have an update soon.  thanks for the good word,  and welcome!

with this new revelation......a whole new direction is taking shape.   just to see how strong a bond there was to the cap rails,  I gave them a tug........I heard snapping sounds and the cracking of wood.   then,  I pulled on the back corner........more evil sounds.   it soon came off,  but not without taking part of the head board with it.   the other side was pretty much the same deal.   I felt like Chevy Chase in the movie 'Christmas Vacation'     Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz!  "Honey.......fixed the newel post!"

post-612-0-10128300-1382379267_thumb.jpg

I can see  there is going to be a slightly larger scale demo in the remodel.   with both cap rails and the head boards removed,  the areas were made ready for the new headboards.   they were fitted and replaced one side at a time.

what I want to do with the overhang  to the aft deck,  is going to coinside nicely with what I have in mind for the rails.   the posts,  cross beam and cap board is installed.   I also will be doing the same thing for the fore deck overhang.

with stain,  I'll be back to square one.......not a big job at all ;)   I know I should get back to the Gothenborg.....but I feel the need to feed my Frankenstein,  and put this into motion.  I should know very soon.

no......I used CA,  but I had also cemented a strip under it.......it most likely would have been messy looking.   it was nothing to replace them,  so I just ripped them off and replaced them.   nothing major to do,  and it looks like nothing had happened.   I have been doing the bash work.......I should have an update soon.  thanks for the good word and looking in
