I decided this would be a nice kit to practice painting, planking and rigging.  So let’s start with the unboxing:BC0F679C-4AB3-4FBE-A02F-7B2EDDF6414D.thumb.jpeg.f1022d18e4b7e7ef1fc4a2f8e04c4468.jpeg93B9FAD7-A369-49CD-A54F-0CF1FDF3EB44.thumb.jpeg.17d66eb70c4f3bbf3beebe2e86dae99b.jpeg

The instructions are pretty decent but it helped to look at others members logs so as not to miss things that aren’t obvious.  So I glued together the Carronade carriage and let that dry:96536D16-F08D-49C6-B391-C6868CDBC19F.thumb.jpeg.86f2f786473771f8f219cd897616a370.jpegCA3CE1ED-B94C-48CD-825A-FF043282F389.thumb.jpeg.f048a74969c1130c4b94029c82244eaa.jpeg2E9E01F6-B90B-42F2-AAE8-AB357CC8DFB2.thumb.jpeg.e17403d1ffebb9908ec94845ed433f51.jpeg

Next I decided to do the planking of the deck.  The plywood was warped and if I were to do it again I would have just used my own.  But I planked per the pattern shown within the manual.  I also went with just making pencil marks for the tree nails.  I used a lead pencil for in between the planks:3FD65BB3-2A43-43B3-9FD7-8F00CAB6E680.thumb.jpeg.820274ff38ebc91fa72dbe72fc1810b0.jpegF72F82BC-F676-472B-ABBC-A1C6C6B39570.thumb.jpeg.1600e9591143eb7dc37e63f7a9e61944.jpegD7CDFD24-CE34-40FE-9A36-F4E60FE235F8.thumb.jpeg.5b8939f39623946531cdbe020d5c9472.jpeg

I then went on to glue the bulwarks and installed the eye bolts as well:

Then it was time for paint...I was worried the lines would fill in but the paint went on amazing!7FFAC24A-5AC0-463A-BF54-63CBDB950B5D.thumb.jpeg.8ebde90d373dc407448252588c7490c1.jpeg946731E0-4F2A-4333-B27A-54326398ECC2.thumb.jpeg.5fac5466a441d4fa626882245a171256.jpeg2E4D9289-1320-47A2-948A-B0B5E87C5F08.thumb.jpeg.97d331617542f97cc29e2367be904a63.jpeg

So far I am very satisfied with how things are going.  I was waiting for model expo to send new windows and doors for my taurus.

next up is finishing the small metal parts with paint and getting everything glued up.  I’m planning on leaving the nails and chain the brass color as I kind of like it and this kits doesn’t represent any actual ship so why not?

That is a good point!  I was also thinking about adding a water way?

I like these small little kits.  I had the kids each help with one.

My four year old son helped stain the deck!

Waterway! Wish I had thought about that when I built mine. It never occurred to me. I built the deck pretty much from the instructions. I did add hooks to the gun control lines and used the stropping line instead of the chain for the gun lid rigging. Could not imagine them having a chain constantly rubbing on a closed lid.

I’ll be honest, I saw it while searching 32 pound carronades on the internet.  The chain is a bit odd...do you think I should save it for something else?

Your workmanship is extremely clean, cudos!!    Rather than paint the inboard side of the outer planking red, maybe install the inboard planking and leave it natural or paint it red.  There also seems to be a lot of missing frames.    Looks like there should be at least 3 or 4 additional frames between each of those that are in place.   If you do add the inboard planking and add a cap rail, no need to add more frames as they will be hidden.   Thanks for sharing your build.

Thank you for your encouragement and kind words!  I haven’t thought about inboard planking...why do you think there would be additional frames?  What would the spacing be?   To be honest I’ve just been following the instructions.  I also have the smooth bore kit that I am hoping to do alittle more with the second time around.

I’ve installed the exterior nails, not sure how I feel about them.

Duane,

I did some checking and looking at the QD on Euryalus which carried 32 pounder carronades on her QD an FC, not all the top timbers carried to the top rail so there were indeed larger spaces similar to what you show. The inboard side did carry 2" planking.

Their mailing list has frequently tempted me as well; especially these small cannon scenes.

Very nice work so far! I’ll be certain to watch out for you smooth bore build (if you do a log). I almost pulled the trigger but backed off when I found out the kits that I was looking at had swapped brass barrels for white metal.

The more I look through picture and research, the more I realize how inaccurate this actually is...I’ve read that often gunports on the quarter deck had no port lids since it was so high above the waterline.  It also appears the covering boards extended to the exterior of the ship as well.  Also as Allen states it appears they were all planked on the inside as well, they do appear to be wider boards on the USS Constitution however.  I also see no where that they stored the cannons tools on the bulwarks...mostly just belaying pins?  I must give this some thought before I progress.  I’m also curious about what if any scuppers would be present.  Any input?

When I was doing my smooth bore I did find one ship with ports on the weather deck guns. The plans were from a well known author, but I have since lost the info. So I built mine with the port lid, but with line rather than chain rigging.

A little more work on the carronade, however the pin does not fit well, so I’m just checking to make sure it fits in the opening.   I also changed the gun port lid to what I saw more examples of.1406EDA1-FAAE-4E3A-99D0-A5DA3072ECCA.thumb.jpeg.2a8c660b997ff769cb9900e3c039a6b6.jpeg600A9385-D810-438F-B18A-2E830E9D15C2.thumb.jpeg.702f605a2230a42df9746b0a17d6eedc.jpeg

I believe I am going with green on the inside.   I’m planning on doing something on the exterior as well....B0BD52BB-5A2F-4BCA-B0AD-F163513EAFCB.thumb.jpeg.ca966dac1b5fa093a83e620b5493f2bc.jpeg359D61A1-CDCD-46AA-B5A9-73604B836031.thumb.jpeg.ad54b7f9aa4fa8f668f3a2972121bd46.jpeg5272E7B5-20C9-4ED8-84A9-E4422714446A.thumb.jpeg.dc09b4f52ab52ecc05a70bfa103d2da9.jpeg0940179D-95D9-4650-87E6-4615BD1E9F20.thumb.jpeg.52fc731c6711233e78309153d1028605.jpeg

Decided on yellow ochre for the bulwark inner planking.  I think the contrast is nice.  Painted the waterway black.

Did some rigging on my carronade...only took me three tries lol.

I also did some seizing...again took me three tries.

Slow but steady...made some hooks for the blocks.  Would there be hooks on both ends of the blocks?

After realizing that I can’t put a pin through the block due to the fact it will block the rope from passing through, I had to redo all my blocks again...haha!  Anyways I am considering this project complete as the tools do not really interest me.
