Chapter Nine begins and comes to a screeching halt...

Remember this photo, well I tore all that planking on both sides of the bow out all well as the starboard side of the q gallery deck. Now I gottta tell you that it broke my heart to do this, but I've come a long way to compromise at this point in the build. It just wasn't right.

🔺  A really sharp chisel did the trick, and I had plenty of practice doing this when I was planking the hull.

🔻 The problem was my bulwarks shape. I cut the planks from chuck's Template and just forged ahead. But my ship was not Chuck's Ship, and even though I could install them, it wasn't right. In the next photo you can see a clear template that I overlaid on the framing this was adjusted to the center line of the hull. I clamped it into place, and all was revealed. My margin planks were installed to my incorrect hull and it threw the whole thing out of

kilter

🔻This next photo is the Qdeck and the wave in the planking. Now at this point it was clear to me that I could not proceed and that is when I started tearing up the decks.  One bright note in this destructive process was that I remembered knocking out some windows and did not repeat that mistake.

So the solution to my problem is going to be to lay all the center line decks first fore and aft. These areas are correct and will split the decking into equal parts port and starboard. Then I am going to lay the deck planks from the center line outward to margin planks, and then the Margin planks will have to be scribed to the bulwarks as they are,  I will most likely have to change the widths and tapers, I am hoping the this will result in a symmetrical deck that is more pleasing to the eye. I am  going to do this with paper and cardboard templates to make sure it will look right before cutting the actual deck planks.

So much for a well laid plan....

Ship corrections 101.

An adventure into paying more attention to the little things that can wreck your otherwise boring life.

I made the corrections to the margin planks at the qdeck. I did a scribe onto a blank paper that was taped to the beams, then scribed the existing deformity onto that sheet, cut to the scibed line, and then laid that onto the planking templates  and then cut the margin to that new shape. Laid those onto the beams and measured and confirmed all was as it should be. Looks right now. The forecastle i'm afraid will be a little more involved,  but is the same procedure.

Onward and upward.

And the corrections to the forecastle templates,  you can clearly see the narrowing of the starboard margin plank. It's a lot better than it was but not perfect, I'm going to blame this on hogging from long sea voyages resulting in the ships carpenter having to make repairs underway...

The cap rail however fit with no effort of force. Strange, but for those who can still benefit from this, check your bulwark sanding , and I'm pretty sure Chuck emphasized this. Too bad I wasn't hearing the warning....

So a little more progress,  I made the catheads and cut the channel for setting them. I painted the black line on the end of the catheads rather than taping them. I painted the rails black, after breaking it twice. I super glued it back together and used black filler to clean up the breaks. I am fine admitting my mistakes, and am getting really good at fixing them. The timberheads and rail were dry fit to check that the catheads were going to pass through. These timberheads and rails are delicate and required some finess to fit properly,  which is why Chuck numbered them. Pretty much a custom fit to each location.  The good news is they look like they're going to fit perfectly. Nothing glued up just positioned in the pics20220222_134027.thumb.jpg.98a2e3ffa682b1c52cb6316f839e03c5.jpg

Forecastle complete except for grates. I still need to glue in the catheads.

I took some time out to play with the printing of the swivel guns. These are very small parts, and I had a heck of a time tuning in the right settings, and the right resin. 20220224_144603.thumb.jpg.f3c3583a36ebfedb5f6b42f66bb2c318.jpg

looking good.....Those kevels you added along the bulwarks close to the qdeck will be a problem.  They will certainly get in the way of the gangways and platforms.  I would remove them if I were you.

I could of sworn i placed those based off the plans. Anyway should I move aft or to the bow.

You read that wrong.....That goes on the inboard side of the platform we have yet to construct.....

Look at the overhead plan of the decks which show the platforms that lead to the gangways.

Those rails are tough...so you should be very happy with how it came out.   Well done.   I havent even started chapter 11 yet sadly.  I hope to next week.  Dont forget the ladder in that companionway.

Chuck

Yes, the rails made me very nervous...on the transom it was like sink or swim, making the cuts I left lots of extra just in case, and sanded to the fit. Lots of moving parts involved in this Area.  The ladder is still in the works, but coming along. Thanks for making a great ship for us....

So I decided to add a figure to the wheel, the captain in the rear is still undecided🔻

I decided to go with this configuration on the chain pumps, added the Stanchions on the companionway 🔻1466129463_20220406_101925(3).thumb.jpg.d1ca36d6fa7d0c27c35f9701b82fa77e.jpg

and as always, it sure looks better in the real world at distance. Not so much with these High Def Cameras, 😉
