Not a problem.  I thought Jack brought it this time.... That's the problem with being late I guess.

Evening all  - so glad to see our refreshments have turned  up  - building is so much more fun on popcorn,    so  work continues  with the  cockpit tub  -  I gave the bang seat  a bit more weathering  really starting to bring the details out now,    next off was  the tub its self  -  I painted the side walls in flat alum  then gave the rest of it a mid sea grey wash in watery coats,  then I used a mixture of Black and  alum high lighting to bring the details out, same principle with the instrument panel and the rear plate,  I then glued them together  and dry fitted the seat  to check it out.

Still needs the HUD, and a few other fittings.

Evening all,   got some more good progress today   - despite it taking what seemed like ages to put thin paint layers on with hairdryer between each coat,  so  I put the HUD  on the pe frame  (fiddly is not the word)  as you can imagine not getting glue on the clear part was mission inpossible,  after it had  set  I tried to sand the glue out on the one side I could get to - then I tried the old method of polishing the plastic with tooth past (as you do with canopies,  it did a fairly good job  but still left behind some marks  (not a problem as the front screen will mostly hide this).

So  - the tub is finished  with the seat glued down.

I put the tub aside and going by the structions  - next area is the front wheel bay and  front fan blade assembly/surround,   the blade assembly trunking is one piece  and needed a tiny bit of clean up - then it received severa..............l  coats of dull white acrylic with a brush  (as I mentioned above)  I was aware of getting tiny specs of dust and hairs  on the paintwork  so I needed to keep checking for this, It will need a bit of a polish as its supposed to be a smooth almost satin finish,   next was the wheel bay  - this comes in two sections  to aid detailing,  so agian it was a case of putting down several coats of dull white,   then when dry  I ran a dirty wash of watery dark grey/black  and heated it with a hairdryer  (they were renowed for catching all the dirt and grime in there  - same as the main wheel bay).

Oh,   and the fan blade received some flat alum.

Here is a pic of the above on my mat after painting.

Nice Job Brother....

Thank you for that,  it is rather well moulded,  I will have to add a bit of scratch work on the side walls in the cockpit as they are a bit bare.

Hi all,     more work  today   -  next stage was to construct the main wheel well, this is made up of Four parts  and contains some good engraving like the front,    after cleaning up some of the edges (nothing drastic  - just where the pips from the spru were joined)  I  then did a few washes of dull white, then when dry  - same procedure with a dirty wash, then a bit of alum high lighting,   I then glued both parts of the front wheel well together.

The airbrake  pit  them got a coat of flat alum  and a wash,   also  I glued the front fan to the assembly  and dry fitted against the front wheel well assembly.

Right the frontal assembly  is now complete  - I  had to first mask (put a bag over the cockpit tub)  and spray the intake ducts  before attaching  the fan unit,   next will be some detail to  create inside the cockpit/fuselage  sides.

  • 4 weeks later...

Evening all,    I decided to crack this open again  and try to progress it further  -  Firstly I had to do more dry fitting of the two internal sections (Front cockpit bath/front u/c bay)   and the rear main u/c bay,   it took a lot of testing / fettling  - testing / fettling  rinse and repete  several times,   as the Two fuse halves were just not meeting smoothly,   eventualy  I got them  how they should be.

I decided to glue the sections in the one side first  - then some more checks and all was ok,  so I added a slight bevel on the edges and applied glue to the one face and  offered them up together,  I used some tape and gentle hand presure  to line them up while they set.

After I worked on the  seems with my knife and fine wet and dry.

So his is where I am at.

Evening all,  some good progress  today I think,  the fuselage had set well  (nice and solid with no flex you sometimes get)   next off was to fit the  swivel  frame inside  for the Four jet exhausts, these are linked  by a  swivel bar  linked to  Four hubs  that stick out each side  that in turn have the exhaust units glued to them (I will leave these off till the main painting is done).    I thought I might have some trouble  as the instructions call for this to be done before both sides are joined,  but I managed to ping them into position as there was a bit of flex in the bars,   I set the ngle I wanted then glued the bar in place.

Next to be done  and an area where I was expecting troubles  (as its a commen akward area in other kits of the Harrier)   the engine intake surrounds  with blow in  doors, these doors in the kit come Two options  1) Fully open as in hover    2)Patial open as in ground  position,  these doors/flaps are gravity  affected  so when on the ground  the upper ones fall open  leaving the lower ones shut, but in the hover the draw of the air from the engine forces then open.  These units come in Three parts - the main casing - the doors  and an inner trunking,  putting these together was not an issue and went togther well, but the fiddly bit that normaly creates a head ache  (Tamiya 1/48 SHAR)  is getting a clean fit on the fuselage, as the sections in between the doors need to sit flush with the fuselage,   anyway  no such worries with this kit  - just some  dry fitting and some gentle sanding and the fit was fine, so I glued them in position and just did a small amount of clean up from the glued joins.

So far so good  - so I thought   "Go for it with more"     next up the wings, again on the Tamy kit this was a problem  with wide gaps here - there and everywere,  after gluing the one piece top to the Two bottoms  - not mutch tidy up was required, the wing unit  basically  just went down glued into place.

The only issues I had  was making sure the front edges of the engine acess cover  part of the wing  sat down into a ledge in the wing, to aid this I trimmed away slightly along the edge till the wing sat nice and level.

The only alarming fault with the kit is  - ontop of the wing at the front is a T piece shape section  that should just be square in shape, when the wing is in place this leaves quite a noticeable gap  that is not really any good for filling with my filler as it sinks,  so I came up with a fix with ca underneath  and a small square of Tamiya tape  held in place by the ca  (doesn't look too bad)

So here we are  at the moment  - wing on joins sanded  - not looking too bad  - a very enjoyable build if im honest.:dancetl6:

Evening all,   I got a bit more work done on this today   - firstly  after studying my pics and looking at  my  Shar   I thought there was a bad molding  fault with it,  near the left hand  wing root  there is a  curved hole  - I am not aware of this on the real aircraft,  but after checking the instructions  I found a curved part that  pops into that hole,  I think it might have been the  auxiliary  refueling  probe   that some harrier  could/would use.

This was soon rectified  and I moved on to an area that was bugging me  - on the top near the rear  cockpit area  that patch I  had fitted  (I didn't like it)   so I sanded if off  and worked the area till it was smooth.

Next  was to work on the flaps and ailerons,  these are seperate items seperated by the  venting tube,  the outer  ailerons  I glued in the trimed  position, but the flaps I partialy  drooped.

Evening all,   A bit more work on this today,  first  I fitted  (tried to fit about Fifty times)  the outer wing fence  - they are wafer thin  pe pieces  almost to tiny to pick up,  but I managed in the end  by placing them  and not breathing till I could put a bit of ca glue along both edges, after doing that and exhailing  I turned my attention to the stabilizers, these have plates that glue to the edge and these are then glued in place on the airframe.
