This is going great Hellmuth!

As you know, I have spent some time studying this ship, and I think your model is going to be the definitive depiction of this one. Any museum would be glad to have this!

Looking forward to seeing the outer planking.

George!!!!

Thanks a lot for your kind words.....

Let’s see the progresses ......

First, I spent some time studying how the “stays” are going to be fixed in the hull......in some of the pictures and documents i found something like this....

So not having something else ..... I decided to “install” a couple of these artifacts....

And now... it is time to start with the external hull....

Fantastic work, Hellmuht! I've been waiting to see the outside planking completed, and it's even better than I'd hoped. You've really pulled it off perfectly. It does look like the lashings got through the planks as in the original. My hat's off to you for doing all that work to make it right.

She's looking great Hellmuht; a very nice job you have done on the stitching.  Must have taken some time to work out the repeating pattern to achieve the look?

cheers

Not many people can say truthfully that they knitted a sea-going ship.

Fascinating research and a very inventive way of presenting the sewing "through" the planks

I have been interested in sewn ships since reading a National Geographic magazine where Tim Severin reproduced Sinbad's dhow and sailed it to replicate the wanderings (I was disappointed they didn't see or bring back a roc, though)

I have just found while researching Viking ships that the Sami use sewn boats, then and now, as they had little access to metal

Thanks for your kind words. Yes the Vikings also had developed some kind of construction system similar to Egyptians one. They had A mixture between sewing and metal really interesting

i have the Viking in my next projects

Here I am again......

I’ve been working In finishing the bow, hugging-truss, And gunwale......

The Hugging-truss has a kind o f belt and a traversed pole that in the future will “receive” all those thin threads.  Instead to do it in brass and then lined with thread I went just using 4  0.8 mm thread, stick them with ciano in both faces.....

Then I lined, creating a “belt” effect been able to keep the “eyes” in both sides to install the poles...

Looks great.  You must be close to using more twine than wood in this model soon ;)

cheers

Yes.  You are right. I am in the process installing the hugging-truss. Looooong process a lot of thread. I would say 12 m aprox 0.15mm thread. Looking for the right appearance with the right tension

Only just now discovered this project ! Excellent rendering of the sewn technology. The old Egyptians must have had a hell of a time to make a ship out of the mediocre and small pieces of wood that was available only in their arid area.

I gather the shipyard slaves would have loved to have a CNC-milling machine, considering that all those grooves and mortices had to be cut with bronze tools.

Oh, I forgot, yes they got the wood from there. The Lebanon cedar still is a pretty knotty wood ... and there is a chicken-and-egg-problem: you first to have ships to import the wood ...
