A small update with small progress. This veneer is somewhat brittle, does not edge bend well and does not take curved cuts, straight line cuts work better. It's also difficult to sand without breaking, so progress is slooow.

Slooow is synonymous with modeling... at least in my world.  I would be very malnourished if I did this for a living!😁

Finally got the 2nd planking of the walnut veneer done.  Now have to install it on the bulwarks, inside and outside, frame in the upper gun ports and then re-sync myself with the instructions.

As Ken said😉 The pale planking  is a good way of accentuating the gunport  banding.

Just to let you all know, the boat building is on hold while I do some outdoor work on my 25 year old wood fence which is slowly disintegrating with age. Have to replace several 8 ft long panels,  cannibalize usable pickets to replace rotted/broken pickets, and deal with short supplies at the lumberyards. Lumber prices have soared at least 200%, quality is down, what used to be a 48 inch (4 foot) height is now 42 inch (3.5 foot) height. Grrrr! 

 

So before the heat and humidity get prohibitive it's time to make repairs.

Thanks ! Got 4 sections done. Then the Monsoons arrived, that coupled with supply shortages, put the fencing on hold. Finally able to get more panels, started staining them. 

 

Had some water seeping into basement from monsoons,  not much but enough to be a nuisance.  Faired better than neighbors who got flooded basement.   Found the storm sewer on our street was completely  plugged by tree root ball,, then road collapsed where sewer was plugged. Spent 2 weeks watching crew clear the blockage, repair collapsed pipe, then re-line  the entire length of pipe.  Wettest July in years, about 19 inches for the entire month according to my garden rain guages.

 

Otherwise, it's been a quiet summer ! 😉😊😇

I'm brand new here (and to the hobby) and after reading some of the guidance docs decided to pop in some build logs. I would like to follow this one for two reasons: 1) This was high enough to catch my eye, and 2) My dad was stationed on her namesake, the last of the oil-burning carriers.

 

He loved her and loved being stationed on her. I thought that would transfer through his genes until I had my first stint on board a Navy ship and realized that is a truly miserable existence. For me. So I went Corps instead. And still rotted on board ship for a couple of years. Haha.

 

Not that I am any judge, but that's lovely work to me.

Okay, I guess I'm back now! 🤪  Finally got the hull double planked, gun ports cut in and the keel, bow stem and stern post installed. Been working on getting the "hidden" (below decks) cannon installed. They're just the barrel with a nipple on the back end to insert in a block of wood. The new Veritas mini table has been very handy.

Next up is building the carriages for the remaining cannons. Then maybe I can finally install the fore and aft decks.

  Nicely done Jack - I remember those little 'half cannons' from my San Juan AL kit.  They're pretty handy for the lower deck guns.  But I had to be sure and paint the insides of the gun ports black to make sure you couldn't tell they were nubs.  Not sure that'd work if one is sticking with the natural brass though.

Finally got the half cannons installed inspite of the cryptic instructions.  Started assembling the cannon carriages and cannons along with the carronades and their platforms.  For now I have just placed the cannons on the deck to check placement and fit.  At least 4 of the cannons will not be viewable once the fore and aft main decks are installed.  Some progress photos.

Thanks Edward, Mark.   Building this in the order called for in the kit instructions is a recipe for painting oneself into a corner. I have to skip from step 40 to,step 52, then go back to 45 then jump ahead to step 60. If I glue the main decks down now, then I can't get my hands into the lower deck to install/rig the cannons, install the ladders, rope railing,  etc.  So the lower deck in mid section has to be done before I glue the main decks down, then I can finish the main deck. It gets very confusing at times, especially trying to remember where you left off.  I put checkmark next to each completed step but it's still confusing.   😏
