Battle of Waterloo Attack on La Haye Sainte Farm 1/56 28mm

I have often wondered about the logistics of being a reinactor who chooses to be a cavalryman or dragoon.   In addition to owning a horse, you would need to have a way to get it to the reinactment site, a place to board it, vet bills,  etc.  Here in the US, horses are referred to as “hay burners” because of their large appetites.

How about reinactors who belong to horse artillery units.  Who owns the horses?

This would have to be a way of life, not a hobby.

Roger

Indeed Roger   and very costly  if you take it to extremes,  if you are just a basic pike man  - its  quite an easy and cheap way in  - they will even lend you some gear/clothing till you can either maker your own/have someone  make it  for you or buy it.

It pretty much is, for many people. I remember a re-enactor's surprise when I told him we were not going to get married in mediaeval costume. I said re-enactment was my hobby, not my life. He found that hard to accept, too.

Yep, I know some who would spend months even taking thier family  on skirmishes  they would turn into long holidays,  you would see them all dressed fittingly.

In Oz until Covid hit every second Easter there was a gathering open to all Australian  "pre-colonial" re-enactors, where everybody immerses themselves in the ambience (or ambulance as my family prefer to say) for four days - living under canvas, fighting, talking, having workshops, making music, cooking over a wood fire etc. I learnt how to make a fire with flint and steel, and it's quite rewarding making do - we know it's not really like living back in the day - thank heavens - but it's very enjoyable.

Every other Easter, there has always been a "Dark Ages" gathering in a pine forest at Armidale in rural New South Wales - same sort of thing, but Dark Ages specific, That's where I met my lovely wife.

There was a book published here in the states several years ago by a guy who traveled through our Southern States reporting on vestiges of our Civil War that still remain 150 years after the fact.  The title of the book is Confederates in the Attic.

During his trip he met a number of re-enactors.  Some were experts at playing dead.  These guys had the ability to lay on the ground looking like a corpse.

That's what I said to a couple of SCA folks the last time I did the reenactment thing.... SOME of them DO live it....

Nice and relaxing. Better than expending all that energy marching, counter-marching, lugging a heavy pack, firing off rifles . . .

Roger

Here in the States, the participants who ride the horses own them.  Same for the artillery (though some are owned by the whole crew). I noticed in the few re-enactments I've been to, while there was artillery, there usually weren't horses to pull them.   Uniforms are made by them or their wife or mother.  Weapons, other than rifles/pistols, such as swords are either bought or made by them.

If you get a chance, go to a re-enactment.  It is indeed a way of life as during the summers they travel quite heavily all over the country.  They are a friendly bunch so do pay a visit to their "camp".

Usually, one evening is devoted to a "ball" with everyone in period dress.  You may or may not be able to get into the ball depending on the group and venue, but it's definitely worth going and watching from outside.

When I lived in Marietta, Ohio a Revolutionary War era re-enactment group visited and performed on the grounds of Marietta, College and Marietta’s historic Mound Cemetary where many Revolutionary War Officers are buried.  It was very interesting.

I believe that other than the leading roles, the cast of the movie Getteryburg were re-enactors.

Northeastern Minnesota is off the beaten path for military re-enactments.  We do have some of the voyeuger and fur trader re-enactments.

Roger, you are correct about that movie. I was lucky enough to get a surplus 3 band Enfield rifle musket after that movie was made. Along with a bayonet. It's long and heavy. Percussion cap lock.

I always wanted a full size replica Mortory Sword  but the admiral wasn't too impressed by the idea.

Afternoon all,   I'm back   -  I decided to give my Chinook build a slight rest  while I do somemore work here  -  I decided to have a go at building the chap who was in overall control over the Farm  no less than  -  Major Georg von Baring, as he  stayed  "sted fast"  with his army  right through the battle for the farm.

Pic off the net  showing him on his horse.

So  I have made another start -  here is Major Baring on his horse  un painted.

He is not glued in the saddle yet so I can fiddle around with his position.

Thanks Ken,    indeed  without both I would be in trouble  - I  put my glasses down the other day and I couldn't  find my laptop  let alone see to use it, but with my readers and magnifiers  I seen to be doing ok,    but when I have both on and at the table  if the admiral calls me  I  go   -   "What  what  - who's  there"?

Sorry for not checking in a little more often but Waterloo just wasn't an interest to me in my travels through history and what little I have read about it was more confusing than not.

Having said that I must say that your work on the figures is quite nice OC. I have done some figure painting back in the days when my kids were interested in D&D style board games and I spent many a night painting hero's and monsters needed to bring the dungeon to life.

I also notice that in my absence, the life of reenactment and how it becomes a substitute life for some has come up.  SCA is like that around here. Before COVID there were a number of events all through the better summer months around the area. Most of them even included jousting from horseback! How is that for expense! Not only the horse but armor and weapons as well! Some even have medieval tents where they stay for the event. Some events at the local fairgrounds can number in the thousands between participants and visitors. My next door neighbor and wife are heavily into SCA and spend most of the summer going from one event to another. Full costume, tent and whatever else they have crammed into their ancient delivery van that stays fully stocked year around. They don't do jousting but live like upper class merchants as their persona. I wish they would put the same effort in doing repairs to their partly renovated house that is the neighborhood eyesore and has been for the last twenty or more years! :( My house is on the right and their SCA van is on the left where it is parked year after year except when they take it around the block to keep from getting tickets!

The pastime is so popular around here that they even have a permanent village not far from where I live.

https://camlann.org/ I am not certain as I have not been there in years but I think it has been getting steadily larger each year with new buildings and events.

Thanks Edward

We love our house. It was built in 1898 and as a Victorian design has many wonderful features both inside and out. But at the same time I can't say the same for some aspects of my neighborhood, the next door house being one of them. Oh well the bushes I planted years ago instead of building a fence are over 15 or twenty feet now and still growing. They are MUCH nicer to look at out of the dining window than his house would have been.

Thank you kindly for looking in Lou  it really doesn't matter that you are not  commenting on every word I write, your interest above is enough mate.

Yep reinacting is something I have so wanted to do  - but lifestyle makes it just a  lounge chair interest, my interest in the English Civil War  from the 1600's  even includes my late Grans cottage that dated from that period  and had  Royalist troops  in the house  (there was an inscription carved into one of the Oak beams in the cottage)   my father used  to talk to me about it.

I know Waterloo is different  - but again it re-lites  my passion for toy soldiers  from being a kid  with all those Airfix OO scale  Waterloo sets, just now slightly larger  (not mutch)    and a bit more patience from getting older  (just a bit)
