I can't leave those Emhar boxes alone. While the parts were printing and the epoxy was drying for the corvette and the paint was drying on the Mark IV I took a peek in the Emhar Whippet box,

1300520533_RIMG0021(1280x720).jpg.f01e30ea9ecfcf6321fa51b0ef8619b1.jpg

I'm not sure if this is a later Emhar offering but the detail seems a bit better and the parts come sealed in a plastic bag with the instructions and decals.

The instructions are simple but there are only about twenty parts

For the Whippet a better attempt has been made on the Hodgekiss machine guns compared to the thick rods that represented the Lewis guns on the Mark IV. The tracks and running gear is a single moulding with a back side that closes it up. The fit is good; all the parts went together nicely once the sprue locations were cleaned up.

So that's all the parts from the sprues used up

And shortly afterwards its all together

And off to be painted with black primer in the morning.

Thanks for looking

Alan

There's a nice amount of detail on such a "simple" model.

Thank you for the great photo OC. The Bovington Whippet  is one of the decal options in the kit. There are eight options. Five British, one German, one Soviet and one Japanese. The Bovington Whippet is the one Lieutenant Sewell was commanding when he won his VC.

I read this snippet regarding the Whippets in action at Amiens. During this battle, one Whippet – Musical Box – advanced so far it was cut off behind German lines. For nine hours it roamed at will, destroying an artillery battery, an observation balloon, the camp of an infantry battalion and a transport column of the German 225th Division, inflicting many casualties. At one point, cans of petrol being carried on Musical Box's roof were ruptured by small-arms fire and fuel leaked into the cabin; the crew had to don gas masks to survive the fumes. Eventually, a German shell disabled it and as the crew abandoned the tank, one of them was shot and killed and the other two were taken prisoner.

The Whippet got its black primer coat and it looks like the small amount of filler on a couple of the seams was enough RIMG0046.thumb.JPG.229a0b7d370fb50f1299d58cd9f6f99d.JPG

The machine guns might be a bit overscale but I think they will be better than home built ones

RIMG0047.thumb.JPG.425bb394f1e9e3ff6c0b5825991a4e55.JPG

I learnt today that the horizontal bars extending out of the front and rear hull are to allow canvas mudguards to be installed.

Hi Alan, the Whippet is shaping up and looks like a very nice kit.

Just in case you haven't seen it, here is a 1918 photo of the cluttered-up storage arrangements on a Whippet.

Thank you Bruce - that is a great photo. Its interesting to see the canvas mudguards in place.  That would be a really nice scene to try to model with the figures and the turret door open. I might have to get another kit and see if I can make it work. Many Thanks again

The Whippet has been duly dirtied up after adding a small amount of rust around the corners that might get banged. I was having trouble with the air brush so I may have gone a bit too far in places but overall, it's generated a dusty tank and toned down the marking nicely

I painted the matt varnish onto the Whippet and then touched up the rusty exhausts and the machine guns which had been dulled down too much by the dust layer.

I think that finishes this one. I would like to get another kit and attempt a diorama based on the photo that Bruce provided. I think it would make an interesting scene.

Thank you all for looking in and providing help and comments

Very nicely done Alan.

I do have one question though. I thought that the flat panel to the right of the forward gun was the drivers viewport. Wouldn't that be clear? Or did they have a steel cover that could be dropped into place and just used the tiny gun viewing slits for navigation?

Thanks for the kind comments, Lou

It's not really visible in my photos of the model but you can see it in OCs photo of the real thing. There is a metal flap that hinges down leaving a slit for the driver to see through. I hadn't realised how limited visibility was in a locked down tank even relatively recently. I was reading about the Glosters at the Imjin. They were supported by a couple of Centurions which were operating with all hatches closed and they managed to get themselves stuck in ditches and the like a few times because they couldn't see well enough to avoid them
