U-9 by RGL - FINISHED - Das Werk - 1/72 - PLASTIC

I got this for over half price from a model club member, so it justified getting the photoetch from Eastern Europe.

The PE set. It’s a very simple build but the detail at this scale is amazing and allows for a great weathering exercise

I could pretty much completely finish the build on this kit in a day, so for a scale comparison to my last (unfinished) build Roma, I’m going to have to use a rattle can to prime it for sure.

So day 1, hull joined up. Will only require a very small amount of fill and sanding

Base prepared, I think a single brass rod is enough

Part of the build is a retractable to T fold down chimney / air intake. The blue bits are aftermarket 3D prints to show some interior depth. There is a lot of work to do yet as there are PE braces for the actual tubes. This will sit inside the deck.

Todays work, the brass straps on the funnel. This replaces the molded kit plastic braces.

The under deck features done, I fabricated a tube for the bits where there will be open hatches. I can now put the deck on and start working in the rest of the PE which I can’t do before the deck is down.

And fits like a glove. Just needs glue

Ready for some paint. I need to figure out the non slip on the saddle tanks as I have to put metal bits on top of them

Templates for the non slip surface in the saddle tanks. I’ll give it several layers of spray Ready for some paint.

So i took her out to the garage to start layering the non slip on the saddle tanks and the wind blew it off forever losing a shaft requiring a bit of sculpting

so today I gave the top of the saddle tanks two layers of red rattle can primer then a sponged on layer of Mr Surfacer 1000 to represent the non slip surface

And a big red boat! The only issue is a seam line on the top of the bow which will need work.

in line with my other builds, I thought I should add some reference photos. U-9 and Emden were also the first an only ships to be awarded the Iron Cross and entitled to hear it on the conning tower.
