The Sutton Hoo ship is very interesting Keith. I'm a member of Lake Macquarie Classic Boat Assoc. we are a similar bunch of  "old codgers" who build and restore classic boats but not to that scale or degree of authenticity. I think groups like that are always welcoming and happy to discuss their work.

I can definitely appreciate the amount of waste that would occur cutting their strakes that way but it's authentic.

Thanks for all those photos of the Sutton Hoo ship replica, Keith. I've been fascinated by this ship ever since, ads a kid, I read my father's book on the original excavation. I could just never get my head around excavating a ship that basically wasn't there - just stains in the sand.

I could see a lot of Oak, & some pine perhaps - did you find out much on the timber types being used?

Mark - they said that the finished ship would be almost entirely oak. The rate limiting step is currently getting the oak. Apparently getting the right quality and shape is a lot more difficult than it was in AD 625. Their target was to finish it within the next 2 years although difficulties with the landlord of the assembly shed may get in the way of this. Their construction  times seem to be shorter than many of ours!

Steve - They are collecting the chips, shavings and offcuts and selling them to tourists in large bags as authenticated kindling - quite expensive actually. Very enterprising.🙂

Talking about memories, I seem to remember a whole room being dedicated in the NMM in Greenwich to the Sutton Hoo find, where they showed a section of the boat in 1:1 of what it looked like after excavation: basically there were the imprints from the planks long gone and the remains of the iron rivets.

I gather if several 'old codgers' get onto the same project that cuts down construction time compared to a single beavering away in his own workshop. Preparation and fitting times for planks are not so much different whether it's 1:1 or a model.

John - I think you have to imagine it as an early experiment in lost wax casting (or alternatively a medieval child's beach holiday)😀. it is now a National Trust site but unfortunately no longer a hole. Very good exhibition though.

Thanks for sharing the photos of the Sutton Hoo Ship.  Such an elegantly shaped hull!

Indeed Gary. In fact a lot more elegant than many modern hulls - particularly on container ships which seem to me to have all the elegance of house bricks. Perhaps our ancestors reliance on oars caused them to minimise the water resistance at low speed.

I gather there various constructional and hydrodyamic factors play together.

Modern freight carriers have a much higher L/B-ratio than these rowing boats. A long parallel midship section is not detrimental to water resistance, but rather encourages laminar flow. If you did cut out that part and stuck together the bow and stern sections, the overall shape would not be so dissimilar to that of the boats of old.

One can only speculate how clinker building developed and Greenhill believes that it originates in expanding dugouts by adding planks while at the same time the dugout mutes into a sort of hollow bottom plank, eventually becoming the keel. This lends itself to smooth curves in (shell-first) planking with large radii. There is strength in flexibility in this construction as we know from experimental replicas.

It is only with plank-on-frame construction that tight bends are possible, leading to a rigid skeleton with a shell around it (certain Dutch vernacular boats are probably the most extreme examples in that respect).

Eberhard - Yes I am aware that cargo capacity(volume and weight) v's operating cost has to be optimised more so than ever before. In consequence modern hulls must be hydrodynamically efficient. I would just like them to look more aerodynamically aesthetic as well.

More plankers progress. I have to admit I wasn't really on it this week. The workshop proved to be unusually frustrating. It felt like every time I put something down on the workbench I had to search for half an hour to find it again. It wasn't as if the bench was particularly untidy, I just seemed to be in the habit of hiding what I wanted under the thing I had just put down. Anyway for what it is worth here is the progress.

DSC02756.thumb.JPG.74107a609fb7ad55ebfbfe14460b7605.JPG

About half the hull is done but that means I have had to sort out the skeg slot in the area of the prop shaft. Because of the fineness of the lines in this area the edge of the slot is very thin and quite ragged as a result.

DSC02744.thumb.JPG.4c1f0fc618925c2f9e5b64f7f0908133.JPG

I decided that planking over this area might prove to be problematic, particularly as the plan is to varnish the lower hull thus precluding the use of filler to mask errors.

Rather than planking I thought it would be better to replace this section of the hull with a solid piece of mahogany shaped as per the pink section of the following plan.

DSC02746.thumb.JPG.35f1de008b0885dc7a40c75aff96f047.JPG

I cut out the template and pasted it to a 3/4" thick piece of mahogany. I then cut the straight edges and drilled a hole to form the small diameter curve adjacent to the prop shaft.

DSC02748.thumb.JPG.778e59638bf06ffecd531c1009bc9dee.JPG

I then rough cut the rest of the curve on the scroll saw, before sanding it to finished size.

DSC02757.thumb.JPG.d6bb12c55024be342264a8db72c355c4.JPG

I then milled the end to fit around the prop shaft.

DSC02759.thumb.JPG.b4dc3bb136c5d00f8361d95081ae18c5.JPG

DSC02760.thumb.JPG.c99a2083fa9d1dd8fae427b071678d3e.JPG

The next step was to gradually hack away the hull while checking the block for fit.

DSC02761.thumb.JPG.92a8270a3b2d5fc844f3580a6ef23521.JPG

DSC02762.thumb.JPG.69ea4f53ec59816512d2aa096707994e.JPG

Once the fit looked OK I cut the slot to take the brass skeg.

DSC02766.thumb.JPG.76806835757bccc87e23b370eb61d15c.JPG

The insert was then glued in place.

How did you manage to cut that slot so beautifully?

And to respond to this comment:

You ain't alone.  I hate to think how many hours of my life I've spent looking for stuff I just had my hands on.  :default_wallbash::default_wallbash::default_wallbash:

More plankers progress:-

Not a lot to tell this time. In the majority this update is pictorial.

Finishing off the last update - here is the clamping arrangement for glueing on the stern piece. Aren't those elastic bands a great invention.

DSC02767.thumb.JPG.ef632cb579fac7b97ad9e9313b440ef4.JPG

The stern piece makes terminating the planks much easier as they just tuck up under it.

DSC02768.thumb.JPG.46346684c57d1dbb62fe7d4bfb7b58b1.JPG

And so planking continued.

DSC02769.thumb.JPG.801850498bc6a5dfada826648d1a0a21.JPGDSC02770.thumb.JPG.e2bae703099b4fa3076645aa8cf9b70b.JPGDSC02771.thumb.JPG.c9c2252e4f8723e35aba65745bf482fd.JPGDSC02772.thumb.JPG.b681d7ae8ab02fd1289482a3e178a808.JPGDSC02773.thumb.JPG.9a57bd156b7537bf0e7bd67d34428398.JPGDSC02774.thumb.JPG.c5d3555897993d826166dd9fcf496c38.JPG

With morę planks installed it is clearer how the stern piece aids the neat termination of the planks.

DSC02775.thumb.JPG.ea6cad661d0d585b3537a045e3fa2b99.JPG

And so ever onwards:-

DSC02777.thumb.JPG.d9990ac3ef6bf6e032fec7d64d6bcc58.JPG

Being now quite close to the keel I started checking the side to side symmetry of the plank runs with a set of callipers. The maximum error across the entire length of the hull was a maximum of 1/3 of a plank which was quite pleasing. This I adjusted out over the next 2 plank runs by inserting slightly narrower planks on one side. The callipers are defying gravity in the next photo.

DSC02779.thumb.JPG.22fe4f7a60283b0dcd30cf46a4bf32ac.JPG

Onward again.

DSC02781.thumb.JPG.6a9bb905ef60891f8a4befbe1dfd7757.JPG

DSC02782.thumb.JPG.23504b2b65bb54a3b99cf9e785a254b2.JPGDSC02783.thumb.JPG.6115d1a2cd96b80b281d1b8cb10fde50.JPGDSC02784.thumb.JPG.dc01bb5c4b2bd6e7f539b88a4bb49edd.JPG

I was now getting close to the area of the prop shaft so I had to start thinking about filling in that area. I did some shaping of a thicker plank by machining a curve where the plank meets the prop shaft.

DSC02785.thumb.JPG.10683df2a8648df4c9b3a6802b5d2e0b.JPG

I glued this in place and accepted that some heavy duty sanding would be needed in this area to smooth the external surfaces of the planks.DSC02786.thumb.JPG.8acd6c28046d19987cb065252796071c.JPGDSC02787.thumb.JPG.ad12adb695033b2b563bfb909db487d6.JPG

That's all folk's. Thankfully the end of the plankers progress is in sight.

Keith, sorry it took so long to get these pictures.  What appears to be a sensor on the starboard side is just aft of a discharge pipe (?).  It is located  approximately in line with the second port hole going aft.  This is not duplicated on the port side.  Sorry the pictures aren’t better but there is small boat up against the hull.  I also took a picture of a hole in the stem possibly for the bobstay.

The drains on the port side are also on the starboard side.

Thank you very much Rick. I would have made it round but from the photos is looks to have a sharp edge front and rear and is longer than it is wide. I think in a previous post it was suggested that the half pipe in front of it is some sort of baffle.

Yes I agree, if you look at some of the previous photos you provided you can see the bobstay attachment bracket laying on the deck in the area of the foot of the bowsprit.EEC0FFF5-9765-4452-8DD1-C6AB613B23E3.thumb.jpeg.2dc2b8310fd1a1853173b4e1947cf060.jpeg.8e12ec619229c30b1e17646b8335ddcb.jpeg
