Cangarda 1901 by KeithAug - Scale 1:24 - Steam Yacht

Recommended Posts

You could shave with that Keith! It looks a very satisfying job making all that balsa dust- a clever idea to support the planking. I have found with frames models like mine that the planks can can spring as the glue dries even when edge glued, and that unevenness can really spoil the lines. Will you edge glue your planking?

Andy - Yes. In the engine room area without the balsa they of course need to be edge glued, elsewhere the glue will be applied to both the edge and back of the planks.

I too think she has lovely sleek lines - it was the one of the main reasons I wanted to build her.

Thank you all for your comments - much appreciated.

I have spent the last week touring round car showrooms in an attempt to find a replacement for my current 10 year old car. Indecision, indecision, indecision.

Keith, i'd love to go car shopping in the UK. Not sure I'd come home with a new one, would probably be much older than the 10 year old you're currently trying to replace. Something prewar, yeah, that's the ticket! :)

Im only replacing it because the UK legislation now requires manufacturers to increase their % of electric cars sold by 20% per year. That means that by 2030 you won't be able to buy anything other than electric. I want to get in while I still have some choice left.

Yeah, we have similar legislation in Canada; all car sales are supposed to be EV by 2035. Ain't gonna happen in that time frame unless the government allows China to take over the auto market and kill all those domestic jobs. The UK is quite compact, but here one can drive hundreds of miles between big cities which is problematic for an EV if it's -20C outside. The recharging infrastructure is miniscule compared to what would be needed. The electrical grid cannot support the projected load without hugely costly upgrades. The EV prices are still far higher than straight hybrids. Early adopters brag about "refilling" their EV with pennies worth of electricity but in the event that ICE cars were obsoleted the government's "gas tax" revenue would be zilch. Governments never downsize, especially here in Canada where a getting-dangerously-large percentage of the population depends on the government for their income, so inevitably they'd start taxing electricity to make up the shortfall. On top of the electricity price increases to fund network and generation upgrades. Also, we currently have zero capacity to recycle those toxic Li ion batteries; bit of a chicken and egg thing there. The environmental zealots are cheering it all, but what will they say when companies want to open some lithium mines in Canada to dig up the ore required? Our idiot PM has given away about $30 billion dollars to VW and Stellantis to build battery plants. Why them? -- because they had the best lobbyists. Once again, know-nothing politicians think they can pick the ultimate winners in a new technology instead of allowing the free market to determine the best solution. Imagine giving Toyota the cold shoulder.

We just took delivery of a hybrid RAV-4 for which we have been waiting for months. Great vehicle! And people agree; hybrid sales here are booming (hybrid RAV only costs about $3300 more than ICE) while EV's sit unsold.

Whew! Sorry, this topic touches several nerves - incompetent politicians, government lobbyists, especially our former Greenpeace activist environment minister, and our idiot PM above all. Spending us our children and grandchildren into oblivion.

Dear Ian. And I thought I was a grumpy old man. I have read your missive to my wife and she agrees you win hands down.

I was trying to explain it all to my non techy brother in law.

Average electric vehicle - 2.5 miles per KWh.

Decent range of say 450 miles requires 180 kWh battery.

Decent charging time of say 10 minutes requires a 1080 KW charger. That's like plugging in 540 fan heaters!

We don't have the grid capacity to feed all those electric cars and won't have for years.

I tried self charging hybrids for the first time last Tuesday and loved the "get up and go". I know they don't solve the environmental problem but they are a load of fun.

Unless you live on the East Coast or highly populated areas of the West Coast everything that Ian posted about totally Electric vehicles also applies to the USA.  I don’t foresee that these cars will ever be practical for the long distance driving and weather that we encounter in the Northern Midwest.

I guess the politicians don't know any engineers!!!!!!!

This isn't quite true in the UK because the Conservative Energy Spokesman in the House of Lords is a certain Lord Martin Callahan. In the 1990's he worked in my engineering department. None of my staff were very disappointed when he left to pursue his political ambitions, frankly as an engineer he was as much good as a chocolate teapot. His political rise was somewhat metioric but on energy matters he sill talks out of the wrong end of his digestive tract. God help us.

Sorry about the grumpy old man. As I said this topic gets me all hot and bothered. One last kick at the horse........

My brother has a hybrid Corolla and in the summer gets as efficient as 3.3litres/100km. If everyone had ordinary non-pluggable regular hybrids we could take a significant bite out of emissions without changing  anything else at all. So far we've only driven our new hybrid 42km, and the total average fuel consumption since 0km, reported on the dash, has been steadily drifting down. When we got it the reading was 10litres/100km, based on 5km driven. Today it's at 6litres/100km and falling, as opposed to our 2009 ICE RAV's ten on a good day. And yes, the immediate torque from the electric motors is fun. ;)

I don't want to add to thread-drift, but I am currently earning my living in trying to put reality checks onto the policy-making. This means that I am working on possible solutions to obtain all the raw materials needed for the policy-driven electrification of our societies, in particular battery raw materials. We will be facing serious shortages and geopolitically motivated curtailing because the processing capacities for e.g. lithium and rare earth elements are almost 100% located in China ...

And then, what we do in Europe and North America may make us feel good, but all those emerging economies around the world will have to rely for a long time on internal combustion engines - not the least because in countries where there is barely enough generating and distribution capacity for domestic consumption, there will be no capacity for electric cars in the decades to come.

However, I am here to relax and enjoy and not to be caught up by my professional concerns and worries 🤨

Yes Eberhard - too much of it driven by politics and parochial thinking. I feel I hear too much about how bad it will be if we do nothing but too little about a global collective will to tackle the issues.

So is your Toyota a 2.5l AWD version?

Yes, all RAV-4 hybrids use a 2.5liter 4 cylinder. They employ Toyota's "adaptive" AWD: front only in normal circumstances; AWD when necessary. Front wheels are driven by engine and/or front electric motor. Rear wheels are driven by rear electric motor only. It's fun to watch the "Energy Flow Diagram" on the dash screen which shows what is powering the wheels at the moment, or energy flowing back into the battery if you take your foot off the gas.

We found on test drives that the hybrid CRV has a noticeable slight hesitation when you "step on it"; apparently this is due to the CVT having to mechanically engage a rear drive shaft to start powering the rear wheels, as opposed to the instant torque from the RAV-4's rear electric motor.

Finally, in my own defence, I've had to live through eight years of Canada's free-spending Liberal government and their self-contradictory policies. The PM is a university dropout whose resume mentions "snowboard instructor" and a brief stint as a "teacher" which was brought to an end with a mysterious NDA. Our finance minister has a degree in Slavic languages. I'm not alone at being tired of the whole gang:

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/michael-higgins-affordability-not-conspiracy-theories-are-the-root-of-canadian-anger

But let's get back to model ships. In my case, today I had a "fail" at a 2nd attempt to 3D-print a part for my ship. Back to the drawing board! 🙄

Famous swedish Greta was born in 1905 and died in 1990.

The world was black and white then and people communicated via subtitles rather than spoken words.

Nothing remains the same except for greed. I would have liked to tell a more encouraging revelation.

Fortunately greed is not the driving force for all human beings.

Some 6 billion people ought to find common solutions for sustainable economy and consumption.

I`m in favour of EVs powered by electricity from overhead lines on motorways and national/federal roads.

For short distance rides on minor roads a small battery would be sufficient.

Just my imagination. I work in construction. The goal of zero emission buildings can be accomplished easily.

Regarding transportation I don`t really have a clue.

After having saved the world let`s continue watching Keith`s magnificent Cangarda build :).

I just needed to build up the keel slightly.

DSC02546.thumb.JPG.3bc9fd331a415cfce778fd7676938ee4.JPG

I also needed to get the transom to the correct shape and "fix" the shape by attaching a pre-shaped piece of ply. Shaping the ply took a bit of fiddling with card templates but eventually I sorted it.

I have had enough woodworking for a while so I am now figuring out how to make rudder post.

I plan to make this out of brass. The key complication is that the lower portion (red arrows) is somewhat thicker than the remainder of the frame surrounding the screw. I plan to fabricate it out of 3 pieces of 0.1" brass plate.

Yep, those heels always seem to be thicker than the rest. I once made a model with an entire backbone from brass sheet and had to solder on an extra thickness on both sides, which then was ground/filed to shape.

Interesting project - will you solder the parts then mill the taper and cutouts?  I don't have a mill (but spend far too long window shopping for one) so I would probably have to tackle this in hardwood, or maybe use thin brass plate and laminate with a tapered styrene or wood filling... just thinking aloud...
