Unlikely Andy. More likely to be a new dress and jewellery. I'll look very fetching on boxing day.

I continued my push to make progress and spent a chilly day in the workshop. Having cut the frames I set up the mill to accurately drill the 6mm alignment holes.

I started by mounting a cutting board in the mill and milling the datum edge of the board to give a true "X" axis datum.

DSC02424.thumb.JPG.97261a1fe19548209e2a2e292c868d7d.JPG

The first set of holes were then drilled from this datum with the "Y" axis locked.

DSC02416.thumb.JPG.7b6a77ebf40894cf9249b816f5619dbf.JPG

I progressed like this until the first set of  alignment holes were drilled.

I then assembled them on a 6mm silver steel rod to check the correct hole positioning.

Now that is one short, stubby vessel! Are you sure you aren't building a model of Bushnell's Turtle?

Seriously, you may have passed the doctor's two week "dust free" mark, but don't press your luck. I would still try to avoid as much dust as possible. You really need to take care of your vision!

Great progress, Keith! Congratulations on the great outcome on your surgery.

Just a thought in passing: These days (in the US, at least) many of the surgical instruments used are "disposable." It's not worth the cost in time and labor to autoclave and sterile package them after each use as was done in the good old days. Regrettably, I expect some of these discards are piled up for sale in large lots to resellers on eBay or to be resold in Third World countries and a lot of it is now sent to the landfill as "bio-hazard waste." You might mention to your surgeon that you'd appreciate it if s/he would save the disposable instruments for you. There's probably a nice Castroviejo iris scissors in your surgical tray, along with maybe some nice tweezers. The eye and micro-surgeons have the best medical instruments to repurpose for modeling use. Unfortunately, I lost my "connection" for "dull," (a relative term) dental burrs some time ago when my friend, and institutional dentist working for the state, told me they were now under an order to "bio-hazard bag" all their discards without exception.  I suppose that's a prudent protocol, but I hate to think that for every kid that makes a trip to the emergency room, there's a nice needle holder that goes into the trash bin. :D

Unfortunately Bob I wasn't in a position to be able to study the surgical instruments. I'll ask what they use on my next visit.

If you had a 1/16" end mill, would that be more accurate in cutting the slots than doing it on the saw?

Possibly Tom but the set up time would probably be longer. My plan is to cut the slots using a home made table saw

sled thus avoiding all the clamping that would be involved in using the mill.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I particularly took to heart Phil's advice. Now that my quarantine period is ending I feel it is safe to make a bit of further progress.

My fixation with alignment continued so I drilled an extra sequence of 6mm holes towards the keel end of the frames.

DSC02427.thumb.JPG.67adb7f473ac36e5716f4677433e2c09.JPGDSC02425.thumb.JPG.1f4d3502c42e9526ee9024d4a36ff655.JPG

i then made myself a simple sled for the Byrnes saw. I wanted to cut with both the front and rear fences as the datum face so I took a bit of care to ensure that both fences were truly at 90 deg to the blade.

DSC02429.thumb.JPG.1e36b2e34442de6b87a3b37fa06ff57c.JPG

I then cut out the notches for the base board longitudinal upstand.

DSC02430.thumb.JPG.835f1d7f905ceff16b88059b047945b3.JPG

DSC02432.thumb.JPG.ffe416ca7949c21e3baaaaf801437142.JPG

i then used the same set up to cut the outer surfaces of the up-stand before removing the waste part with the scroll saw.

DSC02433.thumb.JPG.00769705e7f1a6c2561e9d987d553fab.JPG

I then re-stacked the frames to check the profile of the rail edge.

DSC02438.thumb.JPG.19af76153b9e2684b1e9d29e3998956b.JPG

I then started removing the core of the frames in areas that were possible locations for modelling some below deck detail. This involved a lot of accurate scrolling on the lines to avoid the necessity for a difficult internal sanding operation.

DSC02440.thumb.JPG.ca05a7cb3cebfc042592620dd5e8106a.JPG

DSC02441.thumb.JPG.89ed00c51292b2c833035561de894ce4.JPG

| also used the table saw to cut the keel slots.

DSC02439.thumb.JPG.c95327efbeb63ac445b3e82d3f62c00a.JPG

As I made progress I started temporarily placing the frames on the building board.

DSC02442.thumb.JPG.79f97bf390eb8ea140ea9404d7b64ece.JPGDSC02443.thumb.JPG.36996104d902836e08ddbb72f1b3139d.JPGDSC02445.thumb.JPG.a15d23c3c9ca3cb02dba5823128c2048.JPG

I also checked the provisional keel alignment with a 6mm silver steel rod as I went.

DSC02446.thumb.JPG.b5dc25a5f7869008fcb668636ee7a32e.JPG

i still have plenty of frames to finish and hopefully I will get some more done once the family have departed late next week.

I am currently typing this one handed with the computer balanced on the arm of the chair. The other arm is occupied by a sleeping nearly 4 months old bundle of joy.  I am very happy.

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas. Best regards.

Keith.

Well the family are all gone and it's back to some workshop therapy. I continued cutting out the inside of the frames and test fitting them on the base board. I am at that interesting stage where she is starting th look like she will become a ship at some point.DSC02448.thumb.JPG.9c316c1363fd254862d7f74a959a2563.JPGDSC02451.thumb.JPG.3bfbbbb065a7134d9d8bd16d685b1876.JPG

Nice work Kieth, she is already showing her wonderful lines.  That tab system looks a great way to maintain alignment of the frames.  I have used such as system on solid bulkheads, but this takes it up several notches.
