Another update. All the headsails are now completed, although I may re-run one of the fore topmast staysail sheets - we'll see. A start has been made on the main staysails, so it hopefully won't be too long before I can cross the first yard.  There are still quite a few other outstanding jobs to do other than rigging, however I'd like to get at least one yard crossed so that visitors can get more of an idea of where the model is going.

A major milestone in my eyes! Not only are the main staysails rigged, but the first square yard has been crossed. It's only sitting there at the moment. I hope to get all its rigging sorted out on Friday.

I might do a little more work on the shape of the main topmast staysail, but I'll wait until the well deck boats are on first so I can see how it would fit between the boats.

Good looking progress John,

I have a question to the boats,.....   are they self made from wood or by resin-casting ?

I am not sure if you are familiar with the term "gob smacked", John, but I was certainly that when I went through this log. It literally means speechless and sitting here staring open mouthed. The quality is outstanding. I know you are a long way into the build but I will hop on for the rest of the journey sir.

Sorry for it being such a long introduction, but it's been a pretty complex story!!

Apologies are not needed here, both of these stories are very touching, John. I must say I was saddened to read of this great boats demise on the sands, what a very sorry end to a wonderful ship. She certainly led a full life at sea.

The story of the model is not so different. There were times when it could have been lost and completely forgotten, were it not for some good fortune and a few very willing people. I am so very glad she is being restored in such a professional way to at least show the people who get to see her just some of the grandeur and spirit of the once great Duchess!

I'll echo Mark's approval of your bringing the Duchess back to life, for those lucky enough to see your restoration. What a remarkable ship she was!

The second SCUBA dive I ever made was on her bones, in Starehole Bay, and I went back a few times after. It's hard to admit but that was closer to the date of her loss than from my visit to her until today. How a lifetime can slip away ...

Thank you one and all for your encouragement.

In regard to the ship and her model - the model is the star of the museum as she takes shape, and visitors are enthralled by her story.  I'm always careful to tell our teenage girl visitors that she was named for a 16year old grand duchess! 😀

John, that's so neat and that you're at the helm of her restoration has got to be a gratifying experience. Good on ya mate.
