The NRG is proud to announce the publication of the Ship Modeler’s Handbook.  This limited-edition special issue, published by FineScale Modeler, is a collection of articles taken from our own Nautical Research Journal and Ships in Scale Magazine, as well as two original articles found exclusively in this Handbook.  The Handbook will appeal to both new modelers and old hands.  You will recognize most of the authors’ names, some of whom, sadly, are no longer with us.

The first shipment of 100 Ship Modeler’s Handbooks sold out in less than 8 hours.  There has been an unexpected demand for this issue, and we ordered more on March 11.

The new order should arrive soon, so we have put them up for sale again.  Please remember that while they are on order, we do not have a definite delivery date.  When you place your order, we will process the sale, charging your card at that time.  An envelope will be prepared right away, and the issue will ship as soon as stock is received here.

Not surprised by the quick sales. A quick look at the articles and authors would make this look like a 'must have' addition to the library.

We ordered 100 copies thinking this would be a good number if we sold them all - eventually.  We sure misjudged the appeal and have new order in for a bunch - promise to not be out of stock again - we will have a chance to see dwindling stock - 8 hours sure wasn't enough time!

Ordered a copy, any way to lower shipping in the future?  $8.50 is crazy high for mailing a magazine....

...and the United States Postal Service does such a fine job in delivering our magazines and other important mail with such speed! <Enter your own sarcastic smile/frown here.>

Seriously, though, my guess is that, with the NRG being a non-profit and the Handbook itself is so well priced, the $8.50 shipping charge probably also includes additional costs such as the envelope used to send, etc.  Perhaps if the 100-page Handbook was advertised for $22.49 with free shipping, it would sell just as well?

I really don't want to make this thread too much about the shipping cost,  I was just very surprised at the shipping price and nearly cancelled my order because of it, and others might consider doing the same.  At that price the magazine is competing with actual reference books on my wish list. I decided to purchase to support the new magazine and NRG, but it might be hard to justify in the future.  I know shipping prices are on the rise, but as a person who frequently ships stuff I can't imagine it costs that much to put a magazine in the mail in a envelope.

Shipping costs are pretty outrageous, especially if you are outside the USA.  I went to order a copy of  the Handbook last night and when I got to shipping, the cost to send the copy to Canada was $33.00. Because of that price, I removed my order for the book.

If the $8.50 shipping charge I paid helps support NRG/MSW, it's the best $8.50 I ever spent.

Just to clear the air, we are not producing the book ourselves, we are buying them wholesale from the company that prints them, so our profit margin is very slim on this item.  We are sending them out by USPS Ground Advantage so the booklets can be tracked, and, as mentioned, we have to pay for envelopes, mailing labels and credit card fees. which takes up most of the shipping fee.  A small portion also goes to pay me for processing the orders.  I put in 40 - 50 hours a week working in the office.  I can't afford to donate that much time, so the NRG does pay me to work for them, although I do donate time, too.  The overseas fees are what they are.  If I find an order that was grossly overcharged on shipping, I issue a refund for the overcharge.  We are doing what we can to keep prices down for customers who buy the Handbook from us.  The company that prints the Handbook ships them like we ship our Journals.  They are mailed by a courier service at bulk rates overseas and then the postage is applied when it reaches the country of destination.  We can't do that from our office.  Sorry.  We appreciate all of the orders that we get and please be assured that we are not ripping anyone off.

The only problem with that is we couldn't sell them out of the US at that price.  Even shipping to Canada costs $35 or more.  I don't know if a tariff is included in that price or what.  The magazine isn't that heavy.  If you are an NRG member located in the US and use the discount code, the Handbook, with shipping runs around $19.50 - $19.77, so that's cheaper than $22.49.

I just want to clarify my post, I wasn't trying to make any assumptions that you all were ripping anyone off.  I just felt that at the current price it might turn some prospective buyers away, and shipping prices can vary greatly depending on who you ship through.

We went through the first batch of 100 in less than 8 hours and the second batch of 200 in less than 24 hours.  Kurt just placed a third order of 200 today and I suspect we will have to order more after that.  I have never seen a product sell so fast.  My apologies to anyone who is trying to order one and has to go back on the waiting list!
