Sjors, thank you!  As said - I received the plans for this small yacht via Janos, and he did sent me a lot of pics from Australia too.  Like!

The foremast and its sails are almost ready - time to post some more detailed images.

These images however do also show the limitations I have as a shipbuilder - sorry for that!

Hi Hans. If the left guy is your son, then he must feel justifiably proud that you've immortalised him in your ship!

I also am amazed at just how colourful these ships must have been. Looks absolutely fantastic!

All the best.

Well, yes he is! It will be his model when I've finished her, and he's already being very proud of it!

There are some more members of the family on the ship:

His mother (she has to deal with my hobby and is not always pleased about the mess I make - therefore a nice place behind the mast for her)

post-11645-0-28754400-1410110909_thumb.jpg

And of course the builder himself (which is me  :P, but you might have noticed that)

As I'm not the most handsome man only my head was enough:

Poor quality of pictures - sorry for that.

And all of you - thank you for the nice words and the likes!

Hi Hans.  What a great way to make a family heirloom even more memorable!  However, I did notice that the photos of you and your wife were suspiciously blurred.  Was that by accident or on purpose?

Either way....doesn't matter because having the family on the ship is a great talking point!

No - not on purpose. I made them in the evening with my cell - and this is a bit poor in quality. In fact it wasn't really about the pictures but more the fact that my wife and me are also somewhere on the ship.

Beautiful workmanship. Excellent job and the colors look good as well. I do like the head carvings. I remember in the 90's the Batavia was in Philadelphia (one of the SAILS) and I took many pictures of her especially all the carvings.

I'm almost finished with the Batavia:  have to do some last sails, some small work on the rudder, the canon lids and of course the flags.

Yesterday I did the first of the lids:

Although the Lelystad Batavia could carry 24 canons (12 on each side) I only have made 3 of them visible, as you have seen in previous pictures.

On one side I have made the gunport lids all three of them now:

post-11645-0-03936100-1411933609_thumb.jpg

And what I have seen on the real Batavia, and in various model-books I did not only add the ropes for opening the lids, but also the ropes for closing them.

These are details which are also new for me.  In the 80's of last decade I made the Billing Boats Norske Löwe. These kind of details where never spoken about then.

Another step in the proces - sails on the main mast are ready.

Hi Hans

Wow!  That's a great job that you've done on your Batavia.  I especially love the difference that the addition of the sails has made.  They look incredibly realistic and hang beautifully.  They really brings your ship to life.

Great job and well done!

All the best.

Thanks to you all! And my son is very proud of it - he has told me often.

Regarding the sails - I had made a mixture of diluted glue with some yellow ocre paint and some Citadel Agrax Earthshade, which made a mixture looking a bit oldish (they hadn't bleach in that time). It gave a nice colour, but disadvantage was that the sail became quite stiff.

This then made it rather difficult for me to make furled sails, but I did manage in the end.

I think it gives a more authentic look to the model.

Looks to be ready for display in het Scheepvaart (Naval) museum in Amsterdam. I like the sails on the ship. My motto is, " a ship is complete with the sails". 95% of the model ships in museums have sails, either fully open or furled.

Excellent job. I love the stern on the Batavia.

The "Michiel de Ruyter" is a movie I have to see. I will just wait for Netflix or VuDu.

made some loose stuff for on the deck. Maybe it doesn't belong there, but in the hold was no space anymore... ;)
