Hola Ulises:

With that painting skills you really don´t need to make the boats from wood!!

Only a question, after the priming, did you use acrylic or oil paint?

Hola Karl. Acrylics. Its from a set of a Royal Louis Paint kit I bought from Model Expo some time ago.

Oh, and thanks for your words! :)

Christmas update!

Hi all and welcome.

I finished building and placing the several stairs that go from deck to deck. In those in the central deck, I (fortunately) realized that once placed, there was no chance to place and rig the cannons that go underneath, as you will see. So I had to build, place and rig four cannons  that go under 4 stairs.

I agree with you about the blocks. They often are too large and even if you manage to get them the appropriate size, they would be impossible to handle.

Hello mates. Happy New Year to all my friends here.

A small update:

Started work on the belaying pin racks. (Those holes are more straight on the upper side :))

I placed two small dowels to serve as anchors, using toothpicks and carving them to the desired diameter.

post-975-0-48614500-1483752258_thumb.jpg

For the belaying pin racks that go on the bulwarks, I placed two small brass wires on them.

post-975-0-23311400-1483752339_thumb.jpg

...and stained them with walnut stain...

post-975-0-94180500-1483752369_thumb.jpg

Here is a little trick. I put a small drop of glue on the brass and touch the bulwark with it...

post-975-0-90652700-1483752426_thumb.jpg

The glue spot tells me exactly where to drill...

I placed also the rings that go on theck to support the masts.

post-975-0-92409900-1483752618_thumb.jpg

Thats all for today. More work on the decks still to do, and oh yes... the cannons... gunport lids, open deck cannons rigging... still a long way to masting and rigging! :(

Thanks for visiting!!!

Best regards.

Are you going to stain the pin-rail in the fore bitts as well? They definitely look better stained.

Neat trick with the glue. I usually drill some holes in an off-cut of plank and use that as a jig, but the glue trick is probably quicker! :)

Hi Arthur. Glad you like my glue trick :)

I thought about staining the fore and mid rails after I saw how the other look, but I'm not too sure about doing it after they are installed. This usually gets more things stained that weren't meant to...

Small update and question.

I finished placing these steps. Here you see them without and with a coat of boiled linseed oil as finish.

My question is: I would like the guys climbing these steps to have something to hold onto while climbing.

Any suggestions or ideas? I tried to place a wire handrail at the sides, but it was very flimsy and vulnerable. I think I've seen drawings showing a knotted rope just hanging there. Instructions say nothing on the matter. Thanks for any advise.

Here they are being placed. You can see where I "shaved" the paint to get better adhesion.

Since this is a very small update, I will fill with photos of the general look of the 4 decks as they are at this moment.

Looks good Ulises.  Knotted ropes hanging down is what they used.  They were only deployed when the steps were to be used (ranking officers, officials, and dignitaries).  The crewman used ropes hanging off the sides (but not the steps) or climbed out one of the gunports on the lowest row.    Or at least that's the tale that I've read. ;)

Hello all.

Small update but a big relief for me.

These two little guys were causing me some nightmares, just thinking where they had to be placed AND rigged...

post-975-0-42690500-1487347851_thumb.jpg

... right here, under the deck. Just thinking about drilling holes and placing eyebolts here...

post-975-0-60338200-1487348167_thumb.jpg

As you can see, I thought that adding the eyebolts to the rope before placing the cannons would make things a lot easier, and indeed it did.

post-975-0-13166200-1487348100_thumb.jpg

Finally, both of them were placed, glued and rigged.

These two were first since they obviously wold be the more difficult to accomplish.

28 more to go, but they will be easier as they are not hiding under a deck or anything.

Luckily in R.L. only 30 that go on open decks have to be rigged.

Cannon assembly line update. (With special mention to Sjors and Anja ;) )

First, a bunch of eyebolts in two different sizes had to be made.

Hola Ulises:

Since the change in the MSW software I didn t see your log because the "Content I follow" disappeared and now there is only a "Managed followed content" and your log was not here.

You are doing an splendid work with the cannons. The eyebolts were not included in the Kit or why must you doing them? Also, the cannon wheels were included?

Saludos, Karl
