Stars & Stripes (US-55 ) 1987 by pete48 - Scale 3/16" = 1'

WOW!  I've been away from the forum for a while, and I come back to see not only the Herreshoff boats nicely finished, but an incredible flotilla of AC boats!!

Great work, these are a real treat to see.

Even though a lot of people hate them, I've been contemplating doing an Oracle AC72 for a while now...  hmmmm...

Hi Dr. Per , That's true,  However I think my Mom had a hand in it

Dave, no cut off's , Just shorts , although all my friends all had cut off's

Thank you Tom, This is a hull only build , I am going to add some details in the cockpit and on deck  , This is one of those build's that I would have liked to have done on a larger scale

Thanks Bob, I took the Buzzards Bay Sailing ( photos in the galley ) It's Summer time and that can only mean one thing , " America's Cup " I got bit by the bug again this year , and am doing a 4 boat campaign . The 3 hull only builds and a larger RC Boat . In the Topic : America's Cup and the AC72 , I posted the Drawings for the ORACLE AC72 and said that I would definetly follow that build log , I was speaking to Brian ( probablynot ) about it ,  Here are the drawings for the AC72

Best Regards,

Pete

Thanks, Pete!  I do have that drawing, as well as a ton of shots from the web. The good thing about a newer boat is that they are extremely well-documented.

I have the hulls rough-drafted in 3-d cad as well as some line work done, but it will probably be a while a while before I start making parts in meatspace...

In the meantime, I will very much enjoy being a spectator for your work.

The "in its element" shots of the Buzzard's bay sloop are fantastic!

Pete ,

I saw a U-tube Clip with the AC72 flying above the San Francisco Bay Waters, just the foils streaming the water. The helmsman was talking of 30 Knots, unbelievable !

Yesterday , After completing KA-6 , I did the 2 part West System epoxy to the Deck.( I show that process on the A3 build log , the link is in my signature )  This morning I sanded the Deck spayed 2 light coats of primer and 2 coats of semi gloss white,(Sanding with 400 grit in between)  I masked the boat so that the White Sheer stripe ( on the Hull ) would all be shot at the same time as the Deck. Next will be to paint the Hull Blue , Then do the Deck Details. Here are the results

Pete she's certainly an interesting looking boat. Far more angular than Australia II - looks more aggressive, whereas KA-6 more graceful. I never realized the difference until your build log. Just goes to show how nicely you have captured the lines!

I'm also excited to see what you are going to do to the cockpit. Keep it up and please keep us updated!

Thank you Geoff,  she will look good after the Hull Is painted

Thank you Kieth, Britton Chance jr did an amazing job designing this boat , She has a agressive hull shape (especially the bow section ) . I love the lines of this Boat, its intresting to see the changes in the Boat's from Cup to Cup . The Cockpit and Deck details will bring this build together .

Pete. I gotta hand it to ya. You're the absolute master of paint and paint finishes! Looks beauthiful in that blue. Can't wait till you sart on the deck detail now.

Pls refresh my memory. Was she the one that challenged and won the 1987 cup? If so, my recollection was that she had to be built heavier and more powerfully in order to stand up to the much rougher Indian ocean conditions. That probably accounts for her more angular lines, in comparison to KA 6's more graceful ones.

Have you got your Business Plan ready for the 12 metre hull business that we discussed earlier. You'd be sure to make some tidy profits ....

All the best!

Thank you Omega, I don't know about a master, It's a constant learning process.  I have learned that less is more ( the first 2 coats the hull was still mostly white ) Stars & Stripes was the 87' Challenger , Britton Chance jr Designed an Amazing boat as the lines are angular ( mostly in the bow) , the way they blend into the sheer line is simply amazing. I have not even thought about a business plan , I will still have to ponder that one

She's gorgeous, Pete! I love the colour!!

I don't want to sound like a critic, but there is a bit of orange peeling in that finish. May I respectfully suggest that you sand it back with some fine grit sandpaper and spray again? I used to do gloss finishes all the time when I was making car models, I would frequently apply 3-4 coats, sanding back each layer with #1200 grit paper.

Regards, Keith

Hi Kieth, Don't worry about sounding like a critic, I noticed it as well after the final coat , and had the same thought .The thing that sucks is that it is just that one spot. She will sit for today and I will look at it again Tomorrow.(  I always let the paint cure for at least a day ) . I will have to fix the white sheer stripe on the port side as well . I am pretty happy with the way she's turning out

WOW, just lovely Pete.  Ref the paint, final coat a little thinner and check the air pressure at the nozzle of the spray gun.  Test it on a pice of scrap metal  for flow.

Sweet paint job.

Pete,

That paint job is exquisite!

For my T37 I relied to a local body paint shop for cars. ..... :)  But it sure came out nice.

Lot's of high-grade sanding was involved.

The micro-groves didn't seem to have the efficiency and gain, otherwise all ships in trade and super/racer cars would have it.

The micro-groves will improve stability, just like the small dimples in a golf ball.

That's my 2 cents, and I guess someone else will have a better explanation.

Pete . . . My name is Michael Holder and I would like to know if you still have the plans you used to build the Stars & Stripes '87. I would like to build a model of S&S'87 for a friend of mine that sailed on her a couple of years ago in Sint Maarten. Him and I have been America's Cup fans since the 1970 Race in Newport, RI. We were in the Navy serving on the USS Basilone DD-824 when she was the host ship for that race. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
