  1. Hey everyone - I know I've been absent. During a recent business trip to Orlando, I rented a car and drove to St. Augustine. One of the reasons (aside from the fact it's my birthplace) was to visit the "El Galleon" harbored in port there. Although the ship is quite modernized (it sails regularly and is used for tours) and probably doesn't serve super well for reference, I did take a fair amount of photos, etc. I muddled around the site, and can't find where I should post them all. Suggestions?
  2. Thanks Sjors! I had a business trip last week, and I have another trip next week. :-/ Can't wait for things to settle down.
  3. Jastrzab - you're absolutely right. I quite often find myself having to choose which reference to use/follow. I also try to make a point of mentioning that most of what I've done is speculation. - Bug
  4. I'm not trying as hard as Sherry - I'm totally jealous! - Bug
  5. Great work, I agree on the great coloring. Nice! - Bug
  6. Hi Kinnikki, Thanks for stopping by! I based my capstan location on reference from Xavier Pastor's book "The Ships of Christopher Columbus." I located it just below the quarterdeck and just a few feet in. There is also this reference that I found from an unknown Russian source that locates it in a similar position (See the red arrow). Hope that helps!
  7. Sjors - the snow is finally thawing out! But, more to come this week. :-/ I've been fighting with a little launch I'm trying to build. :-/ She's quite stubborn. I've trashed my first attempt completely and have started over with a different method. Pictures to come soon! - Bug
  8. Thanks Wolf! I've been delayed on my progress by life and work - but hope to get back to it soon. - Bug
  9. I really like how the bolts on your boom irons are squared off. A very nice touch. -Bug
  10. Are you talking about the area where the rudder handle is? I used the same mahogany strips that I used for the second layer of the hull. And to be honest, I spend so much time swapping wood and using scrap from other things, I often just measured and used whatever extra I had that I thought would look good. - Bug
  11. Nice work. I like the treenails you've come up with. When it comes to repairs, isopropyl alcohol is your best friend... Most of the time it'll dissolve the glue without doing too much damage to your wood. - Bug
  12. Great work Vivian! I can tell you're super eager to tackle your new kits. But remember, the longer you take to finish this one, the more you will learn and be able to apply to your next kit, and then your next... :-) It's quite fun to see such excitement by the way. - Bug
  13. Thanks everyone. Progress is slow this week. Work interferes.... heh - Bug
  14. Hey Mark, interesting mix - what does the detergent do? -Bug
  15. Hi Vivian. Since the dead eyes and shrouds rarely moved much, I'd line them up. Besides, if you take the time to do it, you'll feel much better about it each time you look back at your build. If you don't, I suspect it'll bother you each time you look. :-) -Bug
  16. Beautiful work, particularly the ladders - a detail I've always found difficult. -Bug
  17. Nice work Danny. Is it difficult giving up on the accuracy a bit, or does that take the pressure off? -Bug
