  1. They were typically iron. Rust isn't a problem when you've got a bunch guys stuck on a ship with nowhere to go and that have to be kept busy.
  2. Here's a couple of other photos. The tracks appear to just laid on the deck. Photo copyright Alamy - Pivot Gun and Crew, U.S. Ship Pocahontas From www.navalhistory.org
  3. Mine showed up today as well . I went out to get the mail and it was sitting on our porch. I'm going to open it briefly to check it's ok. I then have to hide it for 67 days or until my wife asks me what I want for my birthday.
  4. You can buy it in the states. It is difficult to find and you'd have to mill it to the right size (hence my recent purchase of a Byrnes saw). You also have to get it when you see it. I bought some recently from here https://www.exoticlumber.com/product/castello-boxwood-thins-36x-4x-5/. I ended up buying 4 pieces and that was almost their entire stock 😧. I'm still looking for swiss pear.
  5. Actually I'm planning to use that blade first . I have some random pieces of 3/4" maple hardwood flooring. I'm going to cut some strips off these then use them for practice. After that I don't expect to be using the blade often (if at all).
  6. Well my Byrnes saw arrived today I'll be setting up and testing over the weekend. I'll need to re-read this thread and see what works for me. I expect as I use it more I'll tweak it to find "my way of doing it". I also need to find some wood to practice on. Glenn, thanks for doing this thread.
  7. Since the scale length of planks is almost never 24", I don't see the need to make life difficult by trying to cut planks that long. I recently bought some boxwood which is 36" long. My Byrnes saw is on order (). I'm planning to cut the boxwood into shorter pieces before any ripping. At this point even 15" is a bit long for my needs.
  8. You guys keep finding places for me to spend money. But still thanks for the link. I'd really like a copy of Steel's Mastmaking and Rigging. At $65 it looks like an excellent buy. Unfortunately I only get one birthday a year and I've already ordered my birthday book for this year.
  9. There is a document "SHSC002 Plank Lengths V1.2" from the Sutton Hoo excavation which states (emphasis mine). "There is no reason to disagree with Evans (1975, p. 364) “… the commonest distance between the few surviving pairs of plank-joints was approximately 18 feet (5.45 m), although occasionally a much shorter length occurs.” Ribs do not cover over any plank joints. This was not necessarily pre-planned. It is possible that rib positions were adjusted to fit the constructed hull where necessary." https://saxonship.org/archaeological-research/
  10. Ordered my copy last night. A birthday present from my wife (she hasn't asked what I want for my birthday yet, it's still 2 1/2 months away 😀).
  11. I have a 10" table saw which I seem to do ok with (no fingers lost). I ordered a Byrnes saw a few days ago. A detailed tutorial would be a good resource from both from a safety and precision perspective.
  12. You can find basswood at Hobby Lobby as well. Also, if you still have any surviving, an actual hobby store (although the current pandemic will probably make them even closer to extinction).
  13. Although I like the re-org if I'm looking for something specific, I spend most of my time on the Activity tab. I do a quick scan several times a day. I have a (more) than full time job using my computer so looking here or going for a walk are my breaks from writing code. This does give me a view of everything and I really enjoy the breadth of posts.
  14. After a little over a month the new doors are ready to be fitted. The side frames will be trimmed once they're in place.
  15. Looking very good. Lots of good information as well. I'm finding that my 3rd attempt on everything I do on my model seems to be the best. That is the point I find myself thinking it's probably going to get worse if I try again. My hull planking, which I only did once, is hidden under paint and copper thank goodness.
  16. Sorry I have no idea. I don't remember seeing that in my kit. I looked at the material list, there's some 5x5 used for the gun carriage but only a few inches. I can't even think of a use for a tapered piece that long. Maybe just a piece of scrap that ended up in the box?
  17. Wow. That's a lot. Now I have to get back to my wife and explain why I need a new power saw 😀.
