Chuck got a reaction from Jobbie in Which Brand of Wooden ship model kit is better or worse.....? Take a poll and answer a few multiple choice questions.
This is a poll of just registered members. Only members can vote. The most logical place for it is in the kit build log area and that is why it is there. This is the largest collection of build logs on any ship model site. The knowledge and expertise shared is quite valuable and it is something we want to encourage people to sign up for in order to see and take advantage of.

Please select up to three choices for each question. This will help model builders trying to decide which brands are worth looking into. Companies no longer in business or making kits. Let me know if I missed any and I will add them to the list. This is a list of Legitimate ship model companies.

I have been swamped with trying to rebuild my inventory before the Connecticut show. But yes I have made some progress but nothing really new. I basically have caught up to where I was on the earlier version. This is where I am at right now. The good news is that I have completed the set up in shop for some serious model building after the show. I am ready to go and have set up an area to take better pictures.....hopefully. Right now everything is kind of thrown onto the same table....as you can see.

A small update, folks. Negotiations with OcCre have progressed nicely and we have resolved the issue to my satisfaction. As soon as all the paper is signed I'll announce it on the forums. I was impressed by their handling of the issue; they take intellectual property and copyright pretty seriously. Thanks for all the support and advice from everyone here!

Chuck reacted to JpR62 in Queen Anne Barge by JpR62 - FINISHED - Syren Ship Model - 1:24 Chuck reacted to JpR62 in Queen Anne Barge by JpR62 - FINISHED - Syren Ship Model - 1:24
My work on the Queen barge advance quietly.
I have glued the frames on the building board paying attention to the direction of each of them.

Then I applied a coat of tung oil.

Finally I have glued the planks #1 and #2 on each side of the barge.

For the plank #1, I begin on the port side and everything goes well. But when I bend the plank for the starboard side, I twist the plank in the wrong direction... Yes it's very easy to forget which way we need to twist it... And naturally when I try to twist it in the opposite direction happens what should happen... I broke the plank !

Luckily the Syren Ship Model Company provides an extra exterior barge planking set. As I had to order some cannons and swivel guns to upgrade the armement of my Armed Viriginia Sloop, I just had to add this set to my order. As always with my orders at Syren Ship Model Company, I received the packet in the same week.
And this time, when you take care of the direction of the twist everything is easier...

Now I will work on the plank #3.
I just have clean the laser char. Its time to bend and twist. But I can work more quietly because this time I will be very careful on the direction of the twist...

Chuck got a reaction from Cuda1949 in Carving tools, books and carving woods discussion Chuck got a reaction from Cuda1949 in Carving tools, books and carving woods discussion
I carved my pieces using only a #11 blade.

I also tried a few micro chisels from Flexcut. They worked really well. I only really used the "v" shaped one. The important thing is to keep them very sharp.....as soon as the #11 blades got a little dull I threw it away and got a new one.

I havent done any rotary carving because I dont like the look of the pieces after using the bits. Too rounded for my tastes but only probably because I dont know how to do it correctly. I also like the feel of the blade vs. the rotary tool.

But guys, please discuss your tools and approaches here and hopefully we will have a few that will try rotary carving.

Master Korabel has designed a wonderful Kit Eugene. I am very fond of the cutter design as many of you already know. I love the hull shape. You guys have done an outstanding job making a unique and beautiful kit for folks to build. Planking looks great and so do the deck fittings and deck arrangements. I look forward to seeing many Avos kits built and its great to have you guys on ModelShipWorld. Good luck with it. Well Done.

Chuck got a reaction from mtaylor in Syren Shipmodel gun carriage scales? Chuck got a reaction from mtaylor in Syren Shipmodel gun carriage scales?
Actually scale means nothing and the measurements are what you need.

It depends on what size you need for the ship you are working on. If you are building a frigate at 1:64 scale and your frigate carried 12 pounders then my 1 29/64" barrels are fine. If you are building a larger ship that carried 42 pounders then my larger size would be better.

What are you building? What scale.....and what size guns did she carry? You can also download the drawing from my site (cannon page) and compare them to your plan to see if they match as well.
