  1. Ron, I did not do anything to the surface other than keep it clean, one of the issues is that the brass bands have some ageing patina and I am working to keep it that way. I was looking for some Polly scale zinc chromate originally, but the chap in the model shop was positive about the Vallejo primer and it came in a reasonable size so thought it was worth trying. Michael.
  2. Carl, Pat, John, Colin, and Druxey thank you all for the warm greetings. Carl, your concern about the Vallejo paint is a little worrying, I had heard good things about the primer. Has anyone else had issues with this brand of paint? I am not generally a fan of rattle cans unless it's on a large item outside. Michael
  3. Hi Patrick Catching up... Wow you do take on challenging shaped yachts, looks great so far. Michael
  4. Ah the joys of fidelity to design criteria. Reworking these things is as you say difficult to bear sometimes but in the end we all know that it was the right thing to do. I am enjoying following along on the journey. Michael
  5. Just catching up, what a pleasure it is to follow your superb work. Michael
  6. He has a magic wand! Beautiful work as is to be expected now. Michael
  7. Just catching up Karl, it is difficult to come up with the right words, the work you do seems so far beyond what I could say about it. Michael
  8. It is good to be back in the shipyard. I set up the new spry booth to do the work. Time to get the funnels painted the masking of the brass bands was set up with some yellow Tamiya masking tape. I used a sand coloured Vallejo primer but for some reason the paint spattered so I stripped off the paint and started over. began by filtering the primer and diluting it a little. This time I also used the white masking especially designed for curves, it was much better on the bands. I also set the forward funnel into the glass of lacquer thinner to remove the old paint. Needs a bit more so I will leave it overnight. It will be a major milestone once these are painted. Michael
  9. Well! What to say? I spend one evening going over what Doris does with card and I'm amazed, then today I stumble onto this thread and am wondering what the limits are to the talents of the members of this forum. Denis your work is absolutely amazing, those pictures of the cannons and the surface textures of the wood and metal not only of small parts but whole scenes. Druxey said it "There is no hope for you Denis" Looking at your renderings makes me want to build them.... but I know that I do not have enough time in my life knowing how I switch from one thing to another. But I am going to have to get the books now so that I can read about how to build one, then get the pictures of your work as well so that I can dream about building one of these beautiful ships. And yes when you have finished this one perhaps a small yacht like Brittania Michael
  10. Hi Keith Aluminium is spelled Aluminum in the tables here. Very nice work on the quill mountings. Michael
  11. Congratulations Maury, a very interesting model and nicely displayed as well. Glad to see that you used glass for the case. It is far superior to plex in my view, no static or scratches to deal with. Michael
  12. You Know Ed I can see Longridge coming over to your place and saying "right I wish I had done that". Wonderful work simply wonderful work. Michael
  13. Hi Colin I took the photo in natural light, and I only mix colour in natural light. One of the things is the wait time in between the mixes in order to see how it buffs out. I like using the Humbrol Paints, the pigment grind is quite fine. In this particular case though i am also mixing humbrol with Testors The particular colours are Humbrol Chestnut brown base with flat grapefruit red and gloss tangerine from Testors I am confident that the three base colours that am using now are going to work. as you say sometimes the oddest colours work. When i learned how to match colours back in England using the national Standards colour charts the only colours that the boss had were the three primaries and black and white, I spent many hours matching up the oddest colours for various models using those spec sheets. Michael
  14. Wonderful use of broken parts on the mill. Love the tripod parts for the third hand. I sent my one similar to that to my Son in Whitehorse. Michael
  15. Hi Colin you can say that again. Thanks for all the positive comments they are much appreciated. I have been working away at the colour matching slowly adding some gloss to the mix to bring up the lustre, this picture shows some improvement and the centre section is getting quite close. The black still needs more work as well. The photographs can be brutal but they do help to keep one humble. Here is where it started. Michael
  16. Nice solutions Art, when using papers that are not self adhesive, I find that double sided carpet tape works well. Michael
  17. Ok so you have got my attention! Very nice Keith, I like the way you have been approaching this build, makes me want to dash out to the shop and start fiddling. Trouble is the bow needs re stringing. I like the old cross slide screw for the vertical travel and the re purposed kitchen door handles guess you will be able to get cooking with this mill once it is done. I couldn't resist. Will you be adding some rubber or leather wipers to keep the linear bearings clean of dust and swarf? It might be a good thing to add. I have not had much experience with them the only type I had used did not have their own built in. Looking forward to the next installment. Michael
  18. The drone video of the sailing was very interesting. I am wondering about the way the Ice is so flat and clear of snow, the lakes here never seem to get that way. Also what is the thickness of the ice and the average temperature in the area? Michael
