I have bought mini planes before that turned out to be pretty bad. After honing the blade and truing it up they still are junk. The xacto for one. The blade is honed that I could shave with it. And I trued up the base. More work involved getting it prepared to use than anything else, I still cannot use the silly thing. I am frugal by nature and as a result make do with what i get. That plane should have been thrown in the garbage but I put it with used tools that can be reworked. When I was back in Chgo after my 1st infusion I grabbed a box of hand tools and when I finally got around to looking them over I saw it and was angry. I planned on getting some work done. The only thing decent about it is the blade. I feel sorry for anyone who buys their tool set. They will be disappointed and never know how useful a well made plane is. I have used mine for trimming and shaping and am looking for a shoulder plane to go with it. David B

I have a Lie Nielson that I absolutely adore and I would like something similar that will not break the bank or my wallet. The little rascal is going for a small fortune at the moment. David B

Chemical coloring of metal can be troublesome and time consuming. The prep work has to be followed. Cleanliness is the holy gospel. If you touch the part with your hands you have to clean again. At times I wonder if it is worth the effort. There are several products out there that will do the job depending on your needs. David B

Quality is quality when the items are equal it is what feels better in your hand. As for the Harbor Freight stuff I always take into account that many of them are knock offs. I purchased a digital caliper on sale from them last year. I took it to work and asked QC to look it over + or- .002 for $25 I am not going to complain. David B

Skipjack by KevinR - 1:24 - abandoned

I have seen many Skipjacks over the years. And I am always amazed that people can make the hull look good. It is not a model for the faint of heart David B -
I had a stern piece that I could not bend to shape, Too thick, it either broke or warped on me so I made up fixture and laminated several layers of cherry together and I used epoxy to hold it together. Cheating I know but I did not wish to take the time to do it the so called correct way. David B

Looking good Ken. I have always liked seeing the sails furled properly. Most individuals will put them on and hide the work they did. David B

I have used a combination of CA and PVA a couple of times and it works out. The moisture in the white glue catalyzes the CA and makes for a tight solid joint. Wood turners use the thin stuff when they are turning burls so that they do not break. David B

To me the transom has always been a bear cat for getting it correct. I remember on my Latham I had to redo the transom at least 3 times until i was happy with it. David B

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
