  1. Danny without that serving machine you would have been trouble. I have a serving machine called a string a long. Since I haven't done heavy rigging for awhile It is gathering dust in my storage room. If my memory is working I used it when I was working on a model of the of the flying cloud. I hate doing clipper ships The rigging and the deck fittings can be a drain on you. When I was back in Chicago I spent more time on the fittings than the hull of my Latham. By the way what are you using for your serving line? David B aka dumbfounded and in awe of your craftsmanship and dedication to detail.
  2. A friend of mine went to a place that fabricated parts from acrylic and ordered a case. After he got it back to his place he put strips of cherry along the corners. As a result it looks like a case that was assembled out of wood. however the weight was cut down significantly. David B
  3. I echo the opinions others have posted. Wonderful attention to detail and may I ask how you sharpen your chisels. I can do knives but I always had bad luck tying to put a decent edge on a chisel or a gouge. David B
  4. Congratulations On great timing and as mentioned providence. I wager you are waiting with baited breath for the divers to photograph the wreckage. So you can actually see the genuine article. David B
  5. Fantastic job looks like the real thing. Your dredge is nice. It would also be a candidate for resistance soldering. I wait patiently for the finished vessel to be launched. I have seen picture of the bay and your model would fit in with the other skip jacks in the photo. Hopefully not B/W. David B
  6. I have made mast hoops by taking wood shavings and wrapping them around a brass rod the right diameter. using glue between each layer until I reached the desired thickness. Next I sand it smooth using my lathe. You can use a dremel as well. After sanding I cut each hoop off the rod, since white glue does not adhere to brass I was able to remove each hoop off the rod. To make things easier I would leave the rod in my lathe and use a sharp knife so the cut is even. I learned this method from a club member. Your AVS is looking great. What kind of finish are you using? David B
  7. Fantastic job Jeff However I have read that some SIB modelers use plastene for their sea. Less headache and easier to fit in a bottle. It can also be sculpted and shaped before it cures. Seems to be easier on the nerves than wood. David B
  8. Looking good Piet. One of my club members showed a lifeboat that he made. What he advised was to make a plug to the shape of the of the boat and build on it. Make the plug to the dimensions of the interior then place it to a building board with station lines. Drip candle wax over it and rub it and wipe off the excess. This will help in removing the hull. By using the plug he did not worry about broken ribs since they were supported by the plug. David B
  9. I am waiting for my sister to drop by Staples. To get me some ink. Now to have some patience. David B
  10. The same here how about posting them. I remember perusing some books by Boudrout very nice but I was building anything like what they were describing so I did not buy them. Bob Freidman from Seawatch LLC tried to get them translated in English but was informed that there would be no English versions for a long time. My french is lousy and therefore I never bought any. David B
  11. What a size comparison. Everytime I see something like that i wonder at the physical condition of the crew. I would not wish to arm wrestle any of them. David B
  12. Fantastic!!! Ed your patience astounds me. I would have turned to a bottle after doing 20% of what you completed. David B
  13. Brian I am surprised that you did not take a belt of scotch. That problem would have driven me to the nearest bar. David B
  14. Gil, you are a master of detail. I would never have done it the way you did and would have missed that detail. Your Vic is a gold medal winner. David B
  15. I am happy for you Piet. My shop mgr. had a brother who died from bladder cancer. He told me that it was a nasty piece of work. Congratulations on dodging a bullet. You have god looking over your shoulder. David B
  16. Your deck looks great. Many years ago when I had red hair I did a Revell Cutty Sark. They supplied a scribed deck that could be modified. After washing and drying I painted it with Testor's paint I forget the color. The next day I gave a coat of light gray to simulate the color of Teak. I then lightly scraped the deck with a single edge blade. The under layer of paint showed through because of the imprinting on the deck. The effect was a good simulated wooden deck. David B
  17. Thank you for the reply. I have not shelved her yet. I scanned the plans into my laptop for when I want to redo a part. When my sister allows me behind the wheel I will get some ink for my printer and make a copy and finish her. I do not like not finishing a model. According to the doctor my nerve's reflexes should be impaired I feel just fine My hand and eye coordination are okay. But my sister is looking at the discharge paper and it states no operating a vehicle. I do what she wants. She is the boss and she worries about my safety all the time. Thank you for the photos Daniel. I will be looking them over with relish. Your Maine was excellent, a real looker. I remember repairing a model I was working on that had it's keel broken. So I will finish this one as well. David B
  18. Well done. No wonder you have no more room. She is huge and when she is enclosed, the case will take up more room. Hopefully you have a mantle or shelf that will hold the weight. As for time spent. look at the size and complexity of the Aggy and the Badger. I was passing a yard sale last year and saw a kit of the Agememnon going dirt cheap. I was sorry I did not gt a that price, but later when I was looking at my work table I found out I did not have the room to do her justice and no where to display her. You did her justice I would like to see her in Manitowoc. Now for a bottle of champagne to celebrate her launching. David B
  19. I have to agree with the majority. Your log is great read. If I was a publisher I would put out a book titled HMS Victory a practicum on Jokita's kit of the Victory. Tips and techniques to successfully build it and have fun. David B
