  1. At work I had to work standard, dec, and mm. It depends on who our customers were. David B
  2. Stuart, the Revell Connie makes into a terrific model. One of my club members took a gold at Manitowoc many years ago. Try a thin layer of holly for the planking. You can also make a test sheet and experiment with different stains to get the look you want. David B
  3. Your Puritan is looking good John. I have a question. Over the years I have come across a few of them and I always like their lines. Some painted with a smooth hull. Unpainted showing the planking and both. All 3 styles were done well. What was your reason for paint and smooth other than putting on a thin veneer? Keep up the good work. David B
  4. If possible you can redraw a center line on the bottom of the hull and flatten in out. This would be where the keel and stem would be. David B
  5. You are correct a broken blade is not dangerous but getting the thing out can be. New blades are sharp. We use standard, metal, and serrated. Of the lot the serrated are the most dangerous. A razor sharp steak knife. When changing in and out a good pair of gloves and and and safety glasses is always used. I would yell at someone when they did not wear them.. David B
  6. I am scratch building it from the plans maybe I can give you some advice. David B
  7. I started working on the funnels. This proved different in that some of the ways of putting it together were a little varied. The first thing was to cut it out and begin the assembly. I was not happy with the stiffness of the material so I glued together a couple of plugs out of stock and wrapped the funnels around them. The pipe was next. This stuff needed extra care it was delicate even doubled over. Once touched up it was glued on. So far so good. David B
  8. Do not bother just buy the blades. What is your saw? David B
  9. Mark I have been a member of all three Chicago clubs. Get in touch with Kurt and he will be able to hook you up with all of them besides there are several on this list who are members. I know you will have a blast. David B
  10. We bought a welder. We go through a lot of blades. The material we cut would sometimes dull the blade after the 4th piece. I remember one job took 8 blades. For us it is a matter of which is cheaper. David B
  11. At work we made our own blades. But we bought by the spool. First how long next squaring and welding, annealing. This was done using a fixture to keep it aligned. Now and then the weld was bad and have to start over. This shortened the blade by 1 inch each attempt. Buy a new blade it is safer. David B
  12. They can also be used for building. They are tough and in some cases I have cut them down and used them for side carving. A little stain and they work very well. David B
  13. Scuppers can be a pain. The easiest way I can think of is to mark out where they are located and then start out the holes with a drill bit then clean it out. At this scale it will be better than starting out with a knife or chisel. Unless both are extremely sharp. David B
  14. You have piqued my interest and curiosity. This should prove to be a very nice build with a lot to learn and to have fun. But can you by bitumen here in the states and is there an alternative? David B
  15. Marvelous work. This I'd the first time I have seen a deck done over without being in the hull. David B
  16. Thanks for the compliment Dan. I remember when you built yours and drooled over it. I have been scouring my archives of the photos I took. But that was a while ago and a couple of hard drives. I am using white glue for everything. The stuff dries quickly when used sparingly and is easy to clean. David B
  17. Ed, I have seen many builds over the years. To watch up close the Swan Class builds. But I have always been more interested in clippers and working or racing craft. Your clipper would be a project I love to tackle even if it took me forever. This model is like a treatise on building a late 19th c clipper. David B
