Is there a trick to making deadeyes?
Jim Rogers replied to Schooners's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Looks very time and labor consuming. What I do is pay myself my hourly rate and determine how much I really want to do this. Break out the calculator determine I am nuts. If it is still something I just want to do I just do it. If not I buy the excellent ones Chuck offers at Syren. Just sayin’ -

Twisting blade on MicroMark saw?
Jim Rogers replied to Rcboater Bill's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Are you sure the blade stayed put? I got rid of mine for that very reason. When ever I ripped a board the back end of the fence would loosen and the result was as you describe. I wound up attaching a clamp to the back end to keep it from moving but what really solved it was getting rid of it and getting my Byrnes saw. Zero issues with the Byrnes. -
Hanging and taping lines in loops until used
Jim Rogers replied to jgilchrist800's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
I use blue painters tape and have never had an issue. -
Welcome Chris. Having built the Medway Longboat Myself I see no reason a beginner like yourself could not build it and come out with a beautiful result. The beauty of it is Chuck is always available to answer questions and there are quite a few build logs and builders available. I say go for it!

For those who may be interested I printed the three pages of friezes the other day just to check colors and take a planking break. Been planking for over a month and probably got at least a week left. The following Vallejo Model Air acrylic paint matches perfectly with the friezes as printed on MY printer: the Lighter Blue shade = 71.113 Intermediate Blue the Darker Blue shade = 72.721 Magic Blue

Powder boys moved them.

I removed the three bow planks on each side and I am redoing. The one I finished This morning has no gap. If that doesn’t work I’ll try the wood filler. Got to keep a closer eye on detail.

Beautiful work Chuck. My planking is looking 100% better with the side bending technique BUT I still get these micro cracks between planks in the bow. I’m hoping the won’t be noticeable when the entire hull is closed up and you can’t see light

Thank you Rusty. I am leaning towards staining it as the Boxwood carvings seem to just fade into the hull. I have the Fruit wood gel stain Chuck recommended so I’ll do a test with The Fruitwood and Oak Gel stains on some scrap and see how the carvings look.

I don’t believe you could get a uniform look doing it by hand, you could try but keeping the same tightness and lay would be very difficult. Chuck’s serving machine isn’t that expensive and works well.

Byrne's Table Saw additions/add ons
Jim Rogers replied to blackjack40's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
The extended Fence. At least you deliberated first. I bought the MicroMark saw an learned a lesson. You get what you pay for. I have had my Byrnes saw for about two weeks and it is as advertised.....awesome. You’ll be very happy. -

I finished it about three months ago. I got carronades from Model Monkey to replace the white metal junk that came with it. Here are some photos from my version.

Welcome Tom. Those are some very nice carvings you have available.

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
Jim Rogers replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
After two years of messing with the MicroMark Table saw, my Byrnes arrived today.😁🤗There is no comparison. MicroMark table has a moveable arbor which the Byrnes Saw does not.
