Here are three photos. First two show the heart on my Syren Serving Machine. I strop the heart in whilst serving the line. The last shows the served heart on my Domonoff server with two seizings. Hope this helps, might not be an accurate way of doing hearts but I like the clean look it gives.

I forgot I added fighting tops to the main and fore masts as the model only had crosstrees. Just did not look right to me.

I am currently building the Phoenix. It is a great little build and makes a very nice little ship. In my experience with this ship the laser cut parts are very precise with the garboard plank being the only one you really have to shape. One issue you should be aware of is that these laser cut parts are basically veneers. I tried using PVA glue and all the parts got a severe curl and made them impossible to get glued in place. I had to use CA and it worked fine. Attached phot shows progress to date.

I have Chuck’s Serving Machine and I love it but after using for about ten minutes my wrist really start to ache. Not a function of his machine but more a function of my wrists. I intend to set it up as a block stropping machine.

I received my Serving machine yesterday and was missing the transmission rod. 😭 Sent Alex’s an email, he responded with in an hour and the rod was in the mail. I have dealt with many businesses and must say the ones that sponsor this site are top notch and customer oriented.

Great build Don. Do you recommend the Senstive Drilling Attachment and why? I have been thinking about purchasing one.

I learned by experience/hard way that BEFORE you attach the Bowspirit run your running rigging lines through the Fairlead and leave for further rigging later. It is a real chore if you wait....trust me. Note in your photo where the Fairlead sits, now imagine. with regard to your question on Hearts I served the line and tied a seize to it for show.

I priced out some of the cases available online and almost fainted at their ridiculous prices. It is not that hard to build a case. Attached is a photo of a prototype I just built. Waiting for some product to add the wake and waves.

Every kit I get the first thing I do is trash the line. Ships did not use modern poly line to rig and the line was not shiny. I purchase all my line from SYREN Ship Company. But that is just me.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
