  1. Hi Mike, no problem, that's why it's here. 2014 is going great so far. thanks. I think the boxwood would be a good choice. The deck is stained a light golden oak/arcylic satin varnish color. It's a combination from Minwax I think. I like it because it cleans up with water. Everything else yo mentioned is a yellow ochre color from MS, and is the actual colors on the ship. the main color I didn't like was trying to get a decent looking waterway. I'm still not happy with that one yet, but probably going to live with it. The deck in real life looks to be a natural weathered oak. Glad to hear that the Morgan will be your next build, you'll enjoy it....and I'll have a partner in crime......
  2. Thanks Augie, that's a good common sense answer. I've discovered that also with glue stains. They don't show up until the stain goes on....then the stain doesn't penetrate....gotta try to sand it or live with it .....depends on where it is I guess. Thanks.
  3. Looking nice Sjors. Cold weather makes me feel older than I am sometimes...got down to 18 deg F yesterday....today the high is in the 60's
  4. Very nice Sherry, glad to see you back.....holiday's can be hard,, but this too shall pass.....
  5. Hi guys, thanks for all the likes. Today...non productive.....I didn't even touch the ship....couldn't get into it for some reason. So I spent the time researching the bowsprit and shrouds. I see serving in the not too distant future....among other things....one thing is I don't have any bullseyes.....could be a problem.....
  6. Hello Sjors, I've been going to find your build here and kept forgetting about it before I got here....getting old....so ok, off to a nice start. At least you'll always rmember when you started....I'll get out the popcorn and beer and grab a chair. Hard to believe those flat pices of plywood turn into a fine scale model....
  7. nice work on the nailing Augie. How do you do that without staining the underlying finish? my attempts on scraps produces a vriation of permanent stains.
  8. Not a lot of progress of late. Lot's of little stuff on the mast construction. I did get the bowsprit and jib boom finished and ready for rigging, needed some metalwork and eyebolts mostly as well as painting and getting glued. Pictures shall follow later today. I also had some corrections that needed to be made on the bowsprit as well. It seems I wasn't reading the plans correctly to set the eyebolts correctly into the bottom of the bowsprit, so I removed them, and reposistioned them in the correct places. I also started on the dolfin catcher. Slow progress, but progress anyways.
  9. Definitelymoving along now. Excellent work Piet....I'm not tking a break, just doing piddly stuff to the bowsprit and masts....
  10. yeah they are really good for glues and basswood and stuff with that coupon. 40% off a $5 item is making it $3....kinda gets affordable...
  11. Glad you have a Chief Bo'sun aboard.............he deserves several extra grog's....for a job well done...
  12. Looking good Mate, keep it up. Good to see your progress. I'll be watching this as it seems to be in my near future ....
  13. Hello Remco. I couldn't help but see this dialog about bricking. I recently finished bricking my Tryworks for the CW Morgan. I used wood bricks, and for the mortar I found that at 1/64 scale a strip of cardsheet made from a beer carton was the closest to scale thickness that I needed. I just recessed them onto the top of the bricks, then laid the next layer. It is not to your skill level, but acceptable for me. I then painted the inside and the frontside with MS's white primer which is quite thick in consistency and it filled in the holes and became a very nice mortar. I then painted the front of the bricks the proper color. Anyway, just thoughts I'm sure you already know what your going to do....good luck, I'll be following this for sure...
  14. Ouch.....sorry 'bout that Mate.....at least it's fixable....bummer though.....could have been worse though....you can do it ......
  15. Looks like you're getting her back together nicely. Ahhhh yes.....scratch.......be prepared......lol
  16. Hi Lawrence. It definitely is a new challenge. This is all very new to me since this is my first wood model. I'm not used to making some of these parts. I am enjoying it though. With playing with the detail things I find myself trying to dream up what those guys must have needed while cutting up something like a whale. So I'm trying to think of various tools and containers. I might add a few more barrels and tubs, tools, knives, hooks and anything else I can think of to the work areas. Yes, once the hull is satisfactory it's a new ball game.....
  17. Hi Dan, thanks for dropping by. It's definitely taller than I thought...had to check my plans a few times to be sure I was reading them right.
