More work to post! First, painted the entire hull white as planned. Didn't like that so much...too white! Put on black waterline then went with light grey from the waterline down. I like that way better. Then I glued on the rub rail. I formed a different profile on it than on the prototype. Next came the completion of the rudder and mounting hardware. The horse was also made and waiting to be glued during the rigging process.

Yes Chuck, I breezed through some posts and I am impressed! This will be a great project for me to learn the scratch build methods shown here. Looks like I'll need to purchase some more tools, but I love buying tools, like a child getting a new toy! Thanks for your response, John. -

Hey Chuck, just looking through this project and am wondering if this is a "scratch build" and are there plans and some instructions? I'm sure I could find the answers here but just curious as I'm already involved in a couple of models at the present time....Thanks., John D. -
Beautiful model Nils, I think you're right about simulating the bilge access hatches. It is a work boat after all, simple and dependable they are! Also I laughed at the pic of the fisherman with an eel in one hand and a cig in the other...

More completed on the longboat. Model Expo came through with the proper sheet of 3/32"basswood so I could get back to following along with the instructions. They are so good about replacing wrong or damaged parts. So I did the cap rails, added all the knees and gun mounts. Put on oarlock mount and oarlocks (still need to adjust the height of them to be even). While waiting for the cap rail, I fabbed the mast, boom, gaff and bow sprit. Now began with paint, molding strips and will be painting the rest of the hull white with a thin black water line.

Hey Arthur, sorry for the delay getting back to you... been busy. Good to see you back on board. The stain is actually a mixture of Minwax Golden Pecan and Dark Walnut. The Golden Pecan looked a little light to me so I just dripped a couple spoons of the Dark Walnut until I liked it. I kind of went off the rails in my vision of the boat, but I like it! Hope to see more progress on yours.

These filler blocks are to allow the later planking to lay flat. They give you a suggestion on the approximate bevel. You will undoubtedly refine this bevel when you begin planking this area.

This book was written by the man who researched and oversaw the resurrection of the ship in the 1990's. A great look at the history of the ship through four wars and world tour. All the refittings and overhauls are also documented. Great illustrations are also included, I recommend it for "Connie" modelers.

More work done: While waiting for MS to send me the proper thickness basswood sheet to construct the cap rails, I went ahead with the windlass and handles, locker hinges, lift rings, rudder and tiller. I guess now I'll just continue along with the mast, gaff and bowsprit. That should keep me busy for a while...

I think you'll find that most all kits have some error or another, wrong parts deformed parts, missing parts etc. MS is usually good at replacing parts. One idea, did you take into consideration the addition of the stern post later in your build that causes the 1/8th difference in your bulkhead former?

Thanks for responding Paul, I searched all over, many swivel guns, none the same as I need! Wrote to MS jgarcia, for another, also when I got around to forming the cap rail, found they had included 1/32" sheet not 3/32" so it will not work. Don't really have a hobby store close by either so in my email to MS I also requested the proper sheet of 3/32. They are really good with fixing problems.

That is the great thing about ship modeling, it is yours to decide. Do some research on the history of your particular ship model. What was going on in the seas at that time etc. When I did my USS Constitution, I read a book "Old Ironsides" by Gillmer. He relayed that the captain who was in command, could make any alterations he felt necessary, including the color scheme. You are the captain! Have fun...

I have one question Paul, I noticed that you had 3 swivel guns mounted on your boat along with the cannon. Where did you order the additional swivel from, MS ?

Some more work to post, put in thwart risers, thwarts and supports, put on mast support and mast foot, roughed in cockpit seats and will finish those up tomorrow I think.
