I stained and sealed the deck, I also gave a coat of shellac  to the hull.   Now I can sand the hull and then apply some filler. The reason for the sealer before I filled it, is because if we filled first,  the wood sucks the moisture out of the filler and it may fall out latter.20250626_223703.thumb.jpg.d0a8e077068861d7384630927d205df3.jpg 20250626_222700.thumb.jpg.cca65d4d86f3be940d61e564c50a7242.jpg

Sanding just  this little  bit, she going to be smooth. Lol.  The wood is balsa, and very soft and dry, brittle a bit but I have lots of filler.

I cut the fantails out, broke one but fix able. It is going to be a slow process,  but I take my time and cut slowly  with many strokes , not just one cut.20250626_224714.thumb.jpg.4cbc68b13ca889d80c4d1585376061ec.jpg

This wee kit is turning out to be a lot of fun. If I can  I take My time , but I just want to build and build, there are ratlines  to tie , sails to make, right after I learn how, lol. But the is a wealth  of info here on MSW on sails, I am excited  to try to make sails for this ship. It's an older model, but hopefully I can make it a little  beautiful ship   🚢 ️.

    .  Thanks for looking in,

  2. Welcome to my Bluenose log(s). Same model, two  manufacturers . One is a solid hull the other is another ship that Rodney gave me before he passed away.  I want them to look the same , so I will be painting  both hulls together. Thats why two for one.

    Part One :

The Scientific Bluenose.  It is a solid hull kit with old lead deadeyes and dories. Both have the same history..

First up is to open the box and see what I got.

    20250624_115300.thumb.jpg.fec95afbbb0efd23f98afe76170f8c59.jpg

    20250624_115513.thumb.jpg.e6828e83a5ddb6e37eaa8de580ae85a7.jpg

    The kit cost $16.95 in 1968, I paid $10.00.

I put everything in separate containers,  and looked at the plans .

    20250624_122842.thumb.jpg.664af381055a2f4feb0d5fda9db50a5d.jpg

The plans say to use a utility  knife and cut out the pieces.  I did one and then used the scroll saw for the rest.

    20250625_190736.thumb.jpg.56cb6838b11eafb164e8b77b8226fc00.jpg

Then I glued on the keel pieces

Fitted the two decks, and glued them on. Applied some weight and let it dry. Tomorrow will be a lot of filling and sanding.  After I install the forward and aft Bulwarks, the hull will be ready for painting. Then I will do a part two and get the Billings Boat ready to paint as well.

Both will be copper hull red, as like  @John Ruy did with his Bluenose.

I don't  know were PFCGP  is now, apparently he got arrested for being under the influence of alcohol in Texas 🤔.  He's not Canadian, come to think of it, I don't know what he is. But he is on a plane to somewhere and said find another Inspector  He will be hard to replace

    20250625_210635.thumb.jpg.28b9061b866e6dbd1b1e8635128ee27b.jpg

It is glued down for the night, and meet Freddie Fisherman, my new ships inspector,  my good freind @Gabek printed out this for me, he had a pipe but ,,Gabe had a bit of a problem with it and pipe never printed right,  internet files not his lol. Anyway I personally like the non smoking Freddie,  more on him later.

  3. I just have to install the figurehead,  then tie up the Bowsprit  sail, the lines are run for it but not tied on. 20250622_164206.thumb.jpg.986d6f919d5f998203335bf0ce145007.jpg

Anchors  and flags are on and I just have to lash the ships  boat down . Add a few rope coils and  calling this boat  done.

    20250623_180017.thumb.jpg.fe1cea3f2ff14d7007bef0f3f9ef394e.jpg

I am starting  to think of my next build so many choices,  the First Mate says try and finish one that you started already  ,lol, what would be the fun in that.

Thanks so much for helping me along the way,  its a wonderful hobby to be in. What to do next, another sailing ship, a schooner or two, a train or a Swedish war ship  lol.

Happy to be part of the crew, rumor has it that   "Private First Class Gnomer Pile" is on his way back and should be able to start his old job of Ship Inspector.  :10_1_10:

Time will tell, so let's rap this one up ,take a few final pictures and put it in our Gallery.  Thanks so much.

All the rigging is finished, except the Bowsprit sail.20250622_160756.thumb.jpg.f40ad89cf3a3bcd61b08152f50e5d93d.jpg

Time to clean up ,next I  will add a few rope coils here and there as well as tie down the ships boat. Anchors are in the mix soon as well.

Sir Drake   likes the rigging,  but says I might have missed a few lines lol. 20250622_163151.thumb.jpg.48d3861e56bfce2df554a7288b85f8b6.jpg

so with that the Bowsprit is all that's left to rig, blocks are there just have to run the lines. After I get the figurehead installed.

Oh yes the ships boat and a few more crew members  glued ito place I am going to call it finished  soon.

I told myself  when I was done rigging the Golden  Hind I would build something first before  finishing rigging on the Astrolabe  1812. I really want to get back to the rigging of the Astrolabe,  so I plan to build  a Bluenose  Scientific  an a Billings  Bluenose  at the same time. Up until I get them to the rigging stage,  then I come back to the Astrolabe.

Thanks so much for popping in, likes are appreciated  lol.  Didn't get her done but put a good dent in her. Extras  at this point will help, well placed rope coils,  crew members  and Rum kegs and treasures .

  5. Good luck on your journey,  the Duchess of Kingston is a wonderful ship to built, the quality of the material and the great instructions are hands down the best I have ever done. One peice of advice hide the knight figurehead until the last possible  second to install lol

Pulling up a chair as they say  hope you don't mined

  6. Did I every mention that I am having the time of my life  .

Slow start to the day but hey I am loving it.

This little  kit is nice to put together  and painting to was so much fun. However,  when it comes to rigging,  no blocks of any kind, I  put most of this kit together  by following their plan lol. I have not learnt anything in four years that plans may be WRONG lol.  Oh well.

One of the benefits of modeling is my reading skills have improved dramatically  but my understanding is lacking. Lol.

    20250621_113159.thumb.jpg.b3bcbfa88f7fd33fc3757561395a8130.jpg

starboard side is rigged  up to the Bowsprit mast, I decided to leave the  Bowsprit sail until after the figurehead is installed. That and I have to add some racks for tieing the Bowsprit rigging to the ship. Speaking of rack, Keith I don't think that would be historical correct,  lol. I will run it past my printer, but it's his birthday today and I don't want to bug him to much. He's at that age  you know , lol.

Anyway  let's flip this ship and rig the portside.  It would have been a  lot easier if I had tie all the blocks to the mast first, shaking syndrome,  and threading blocks  I am at that age you know. Lol.20250621_113513.thumb.jpg.93b56851699f33f55e747f7f1734a8d8.jpg

The port side still needs six single  blocks, but easy to reach.

Things are looking good for Sunday,  except the Bowsprit  sail,  small revisions are needed.

    Thanks for looking in,

    Bob M.

  7. Only 26 more lines to run then tie them all off, then anchors, ships boat, done lol.20250620_203214.thumb.jpg.91798c9a10aafdfdaedc86ac1895f500.jpg

I have been looking into the figurehead,  the kit come with no blocks, no figurehead

no ships boat, no thimble blocks , no heart blocks. I thank my God for my friend who is a wizard at printing things. I have to be careful what I say around  him because when he hears that I need something  he will print it lol. Here is the figurehead  he is working on. It wont be exactly like this and will be attached a bit different . I don't know where I got this picture but it is from a Golden Hind  build someway. I am only using the idea not exactly as shown. Messenger_creation_D5472E1F-9DDF-426F-9EC3-E0DC61FFA402.thumb.jpeg.a603671301b99bba406117bfba53258d.jpeg

    20250620_102454.thumb.jpg.caab6688dbaf0c027ea076e7d638c72e.jpg

plan is to file the bow flat, about half way through about. Once flat the figurehead will be pinned to it. Should work.

The body is slowly healing,  at 70 they say it takes longer to heal, lol I don't know about that because it seems something always hurts 😅 🙃

I got to spend a few hours today in the shipyard,  the weekend looks great for time in the yard, so a push to get'er done by Sunday night, we will see. There not much to do now that the 5th season is over lol. So I should get lots done. Talk to you Sunday.my friends  .

I will be building this Scientific Bluenose kit, it doesn't even have any maple leafs on it. I have a Billings Bluenose to do as well, no flag with the kit, but it shows an Ensign  on the Mizzen mast , no maple leaf either.

Good luck on your journey, joining you soon lol

    Knocklouder

Pulling up a chair as they say.If you don't mined.

  9. You have a lot less filler on your first hull than My first hull.:) Nice work.  I study this link till the cows came home, and still have trouble  😐

I have taken the Hind out of the display case and have her back on the bench . I have had a few set backs nothing serious,  I fell awhile ago separated my shoulder,  that's getting  better, now I blew a knee, got a 850.00 brace for my knee that only further my pain in my wallet 🙃

    20250605_130748.thumb.jpg.587ec52be85522c244255442eef16a91.jpg

I recived my order for rigging lines so now I can continue on.my journey.

    20250609_141441.thumb.jpg.66b3302e4ca35ab2f63689cf2b6910ae.jpg

plan in hand, time to get all the blocks and line install, lash down the ships boat anchors and flag done. Lol

Coming up to four years that I have been modeling,  time flys when your having fun. And being here is the most fun one could ever  have. Thanks so much for showing me how. Talk soon my shipmates..
