  1. Welcome back. And best wishes to the wife for continued progress. The wait was certainly worthwhile and I applaud your effort.......and re-efforts!
  2. The word Amen is generally used at the end of a prayer in the Christian faith. Used the way I did, it means 'absolutely right'.
  3. You'll probably want Golden of Light oak. Don't forget some 'natural' to cut the color to what you like. A lot of us use about 30% color/70% natural.
  4. Too bad she couldn't fly. Oh, excuse me, wrong thread
  5. Ah- it's totally a matter of preference and depends on what kind of wood you are using and what you like to look at. At the very least you will want to apply a protective finish. Your actual deck planking looks pretty light so I'm guessing it's basswood which is pretty soft and doesn't take stain evenly. You don't HAVE to stain it but again it depends on the color you want. I like a flat bowling alley kind of finish. So for basswood I'd pick a brand of stain products and stick with it. With basswood (if that's what it is) you might choose a pre-stain product (like Minwax) which will allow any color you apply to be even. The stain itself might be something like Golden Oak. You might even want to mix that stain with some natural or clear stain to give a lighter color. After staining you want a 'finish', preferably flat of something like a polyurethane. You need to 'play' with it to see what you like and again, once you have it, stick with it. Check around MSW and look at decks to see what, and how, people do it and what products they use. Try everything on scrap!!!!
  6. Be a good idea to establish your finishing process for the deck before you get too far into it. You will want to be consistant. Use some scrap wood to determine what you will be using for simulated caulking as well as the stain/finish sequence you will be using. Once you have a total process you'll want to stick with it. Looking good so far.
  7. Just don't hang around to meet the 'dropper'. Back to training the spiders.
  8. Oh no.....your wife too? Mine is a weaver and quilter. Takes up 1/2 my shop with her looms. Took a look at Thread Heaven and have no idea what's in it. But, they did compare it to beeswax so I'm sure they know what they're doing. Let us know how it works Now as far as the chants involved, I'm afraid to post them on MSW as the post Police might put me 'on report'. However, for some reason the tirade always begins with 'Oh _ _ _ _ ! You're on your own from there
  9. Andy - what a happy day! She is a true beauty and you deserve to just stand back for a bit and smile. Thanks for sharing her with us. I'll look forward to you next log and, of course, for your Syren when you're ready. I think you'll enjoy working with wood!
  10. Four days without Sjors is like............ (I'll need to think about that).
  11. Your plan is sound Wayne. Those holes better be about # 78. Are the catheads painted? If so, the grooves will be good. If they are natural you might want to highlight the groove with a bit of pencil to make them stand out. Steady hand, my friend.
  12. But Garwood, we need a new glue to beat up on!
  13. Ok.... now I see what you had to do. You did it well ...... nice job. Those black bands are whipping and yours look good. Never tried Johnsons on line but there's only one way to find out if it works . My uneducated guess is that it will but you won't know the long term effects from the other chemicals in the formulation. But you can get beeswax from Model Expo in a handy little plastic case or you can find it at many craft stores. Beeswax is very pure chemically and will not damage rigging over time (ordinary parafin will). Now......lines. For the record, I HATE working with lines but here it's an occupational hazard. I fight with them, curse them, try to make them do what I need. It just takes patience and listening to the line. If it wants to twist left and you want it to go right, turn it over...play with it. You need to bend to it's wishes a little and the wax will help. Rest assured that evrything I do with line follows the same path........ 1) The first try is no good whatsoever 2) The second is usualy acceptable but takes me 1 1/2 hours, no matter how simple 3) By the time I get to the 6th time, it takes 6.13 minutes (or less). Patience and practice is all you can do. You did the right thing by walking away for a bit, letting off some steam and then coming back with a fresh outlook. All that said........ BEAUTIFUL JOB
  14. Sounds like we've beat the epoxy horse to death.
  15. Yes, kind of intimidating at first look. But take it apart in your mind and, as you rig it one part on top of another, it will make sense. Of course actually doing it is something else . I'm really glad Robbyn posted her questions. She's a lot smarter than I am to do so. But we all get there one way or another!
  16. Buck....I'm stuck here. I can't visualize what you're trying to do. Are you making 2 or 3 seperate lashings of black running back toward the handle? If I look at the lower harpoon I see youve laid out the light color. Then on the upper one you have a whipping of black that is, say, 6" wide full scale. Are you trying to make more back up toward the end of the handle?
  17. I can't comment on airbrushes. But a little self-cleansing ...... letting the steam come out of your ears....never hurts. You'll be ready for a fresh attack.
  18. Yeah, I was the same way with aircraft. Last 12 have all been scratched from plans. But I aint gonna live long enough to do that with a ship.
  19. Hey- you've gotten some great advice. MSW works! The deadeye lanyard is the line that runs between the deadeye holes and holds them together. Make sure the knot that you use to start off is inboard so you don't see it from the outside of the ship. There are times when there are single shrouds. In that case I run the shroud from one side over to the other. You may wrap it around the mast or not ---you need to see how it looks. If you don't, just run it straight over and you may want to seize it to the shround next to it.
  20. Just dropping by to see how the other half lives. Looking real nice Larry.
  21. I only need to make one comment here,,,,,, everything Russ says is 100% on the mark.
