Wow Yves, what a cool model and I really liked that video! Your craftsmanship shows in both of your modeling endeavors, my Father in law had a sweet Marklin layout, he emigrated from Germany in 1961, was quite the mechanic and pilot, really lived the American dream! I will continue to check in on your project! Awesome!

I asked him that clear back during Syren and Confederacy - I think he must be OCD about hand washing😀 I really think the key is just being meticulous and deliberate with every aspect of the build and yes, keeping everything clean.... work area, model, tools.... and your hands!

ASAT got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Granado 1742 by ASAT - 1/64 - Using Victory Models Plans
Well, I am going to do a Scratch build of the Granado Cross Section along with Grant, Mobbsie and Jack as soon as my plans get here but I have been working on the full model for some time using the plan set from Amati/Victory. I wanted to definitely do a build log for the cross section but I thought what the heck I may as well do a log for both. I plan on doing the cross much larger, I am contemplating 1/32 but 1/48 may be OK too I will see when the plans get here. - As usual I am using as little paint as possible and using various colored woods to depict the different schemes. So far I have used birch ply for the formers/bulkheads, Boxwood for the keel/stem and am planking with Pear and Boxwood and Holly on the deck. The bulwarks are Redheart as will be most of the various deck fittings. The mortar housings are from some curly bubinga or bocote - I am not sure which and I can't get an ID on it from Macbeath Hardwoods where I bought it - it must have been a pretty unique piece as I can't find any other wood like it despite several trips there. I am currently planking the hull with Box and will decide on whether to paint the waterline and below white after I complete it. Here are some pics of where I am ......

You're a lot smarter than I am Tom.  I went with the 1/72 planes (bi planes of all things which have their added complication) and a 1/700 WWII destroyer to reintroduce me to plastic modeling.  It's been an adventure to say the least.  Looking forward to moving up to bigger scales I can tell you that.

    Evening,
Thanks for looking in all the likes!

    Mike,
I went with this model for learning because of it's size.
It's not the biggest or the smallest model I've built, but just the right size to hide "first timer" mistakes!
I figured bigger than 1/72 but no 1/200 battle ships yet.

The tape has come off the engine cowlings.
    Not too shabby.
Some leakage, could have done a better taping job.

I must say the Tamiya brand masking tape works really well.

    Slowly coming together.

I started taping the fuselage as well.
It's next to get it's exterior paint.

Being my first go around with airbrushing.
Wasn't sure if it was better to paint interior first then exterior later.
Taping wasn't too bad here, tricky, but not bad. Being that I needed something wider than Tamiya masking tape, I used a simple 3M masking tape.

I also painted the propellers. Used a Mr. Color flat black.
These will get there distinctive yellow stripe at the end of each blade and flat aluminum for the central hub and accents.
I think there are some decals for these, I have to look into that.

Well, as of today with the ban on some medical procedures being lifted, It was back to work for me.
Cataract, Retinal, Glaucoma surgeries, eye injections and most other eye procedures, even simple basic everyday eye exams were put on hiatus.
Some people get monthly injections in the eye for Macular Degeneration. Those people haven't been getting those injections.
The injections delay vision loss. If folks miss these injections, essentially damage done and vision is lost.
There's going to be a lot of desperate folks.

It's going to be a mess!
Models may not be on the top of my agenda for the next day or two.
At least until our team finds it's rhythm and starts humming again like a well oiled machine.

There aren't a ton so it went reasonably quickly. Eagle Strike decals are very nice to work with and respond well to the Micro Scale finishing system of Micro-Set and Micro-Sol. Next up, another gloss coat to seal them in preparation for a panel line wash.

Glad to be able to help a bit.  These blogs are of amazing help.  I have pored over the Pegasus, Fly and Syren blogs and gotten a wealth of information.  Trying to do this from the kit instructions alone would be nearly impossible.
      Good luck!

    HMS Diana – 4th build
In spite of reason, I decided to order my dream kit mainly because I know that Brexit is around the corner and perhaps after it will be more difficult/expensive to deal with my supplier in UK. Hopefully I wont start building it for a while, since I really need to finish my other kits. But at least, I have it and decided to make the start of a buildlog.

I have always thought this is one of the most beautiful ships from the Nelson era and I really like my other Caldercraft kits, especially in 1:64. Its really huge so it will take years to complete.

    History
According to Wikipedia, HMS Diana was a 38-gun Artois-class fifth rate frigate of the Royal Navy. She was launched in 1794 and had 8 sister ships (Artois, Jason, etc).
Diana participated in an attack on a French frigate squadron anchored at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue at the Action of 15 November 1810, which ultimately led to the destruction of the Elisa. Boats from Diana went in and set fire to the beached Eliza despite heavy fire from shore batteries and three nearby armed brigs; the British suffered no casualties.

On 7 March 1815 Diana was sold to the Dutch navy for £36,796. On 27 August 1816 she was one of six Dutch frigates that participated in the bombardment of Algiers.
Diana was destroyed in a fire on 16 January 1839 while in dry-dock at Willemsoord, Den Helder.

    The kit
The first impression of the box is just that it is huge. The box is just way bigger than all of the other kits i have bought. As I understand, this was the first kit Caldercraft made in the Nelson Navy series so some of its design my be outdated and plans are not at all as good as their newer kits.

It takes alot of time just to go through the parts and they seemed to be very high quality of basically everything. There has been some critic of the walnut provided in these kits but maybe Caldercraft have listen because its perfect in this box.

    A huge box!

      Everything in it....

    The frames

This small boat kits will probably take some time to do...

Walnut details… here I discovered that even though it is stated that it is a 38-gun frigate… it also got an additional 8 carronades!

All these parts came in the white small box.

The manuals are not that detailed…

And I think I have more plans for my Granado… even though its less than half the size.

Wish me luck, I am going to need it!

Moving along the next step was to apply the two parts to the bow. As I prepared the parts to do this I noticed that was a very small gap at their seam, I considered sanding them for a tighter fit but was sure I would either break them or change their dimensions making matters worse. I happened to flip them over and discover the seam much tighter. It appears the laser cut is not exactly 90 degrees to the face of the wood sheet. Not sure if it was a setup issue or more probable that a tiny bit more material is burned away at the initial point of contact of the laser. Not a big issue at all but interesting. The parts went on well with a great fit. My next step was to apply the strips over the propeller shaft tunnel and cut away the bridges in the keel, very straightforward. The two bitts with the red arrows pointing to them gave me a bit of pause as in my mind at least the plans didn't give an exact location for parts 23 and 24. I looked at the log for this kit by GuntherMT and his excellent photos sorted me out.  https://modelshipworld.com/topic/13246-usn-picket-boat-1-by-gunthermt-model-shipways-scale-124/

    Cheers gents,

Small update reflecting this weekend's work.  Have been unsure what to do with the fore companion ladder and whether to include the safety lines and whether these would look right, but approaching point where decision is needed.  I seem to recall reading in TFFM that the hand ropes would have been secured to small ringbolts in the deck below (there really should be a word for the situation where you remember reading something but then are subsequently unable to find the reference when actually needed!).  Small PE ring bolts were used in the lower deck and 0.3mm line secured to them with a false splice.  RB Models stanchions were used as they seemed a little more to scale, rather than the kit supplied items which appeared too tall - these may not be completely period accurate, but are close enough to my eye.

I feel there should also be something around the main hatch companion ladder, but cant quite see what this would look like, as the iron supports for the pumps are obstructions.

The only way I could figure out to install these was to estimate the length of line needed and then attach the ringbolts off the model to - I was anticipating many redoes here but luckily seemed to get it how I was hoping on the first attempt.  The location of the ringbolts was determined by dry fitting the companion ladder, the ladder only being finally installed once the hand ropes were all in position.

    Mobbsie,

I am not sure what will happen with my Surprise. I made a bad error early in the build which has led to major misalignment of the hull.
That problem coupled with where to keep the monster when finished has stopped my decision making stone dead.

Good luck with your armed pinnace.

Does cling-film cling to epoxy resin ? No idea, but if it doesn't, you may be able to use it like 'peel ply' thing. I gather it works squeeze the resin flat, rather than following the contour of the woven fabric surface. Could be worthwhile some experiments.
