  1. There is a "carving group" in the Group Projects area. PM Chuck and check that the carving wood kit is still available. The turtorials are still there and that should be a help. I also have this one: http://carvingbook.weebly.com/english-pdf-version.html which is also here: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/bill-short-rotary-carving-1835949979
  2. Rock on, Chris. Everything I've seen or heard that comes out of your shop looks great.
  3. Rats. I didn't know that. Thanks for the info Engilman. Many decades ago when I was in that area for business, besides Baltimore Harbor, Aberteen was always worth a visit.
  4. Face mask is always an excellent idea with spray painting, be it rattle cans or airbrush.
  5. Phil, go to the bottom left of the page and you'll see IPS Themes. Open and try different themes. I'm not sure if background has anything to do with this. So if the themes don't fix it, try changing your background and settings. Do provide us with more info such as your operating system.
  6. Alan, if you ever get way up north to the Baltimore area, be sure to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Their collection of armor is very impressive to say the least.
  7. Thanks for the support and comments. I will say, this is NOT the fault of the kit. I just blew it is all. As for the joints on this side being all in a row, it was intentional. I did shift on the other side (the first one I finished). Both sides were about a 3rd of the way done working one plank at a time and alternating between sides. Then I just focused on the first side and realized I messed up the planking. So finished the second side realizing that sand-fill-sand and paint was the answer at this point. Chris has a good method. I looked again at Belle Poule and the photos, etc. of the ill-fated Licorne. I know damn well I can do better and will next time. Be a bit better organized, etc. Now to carry on and do the best I can do and learn from it... or maybe it's "re-learn" from it.
  8. Thanks, Chris. I'll be sanding, etc. starting in about an hour. I'm just basically see what she looks like after sanding and filling.
  9. I'm in the neutral zone.... either one. However, what are your intentions for the rest of the ship as far as paint? That should be taken into the decision.
  10. Wow... I thought you took this kit to new levels before but the 3D printing is adding so much to it.
  11. Nice looking shop, Bug. I'm happy to hear the surgery went well.
  12. I'm in on following this. I know zip about Japanese watercraft but find them fascinating to see how and why they were different than European vessels.
  13. Due to some foul ups early in the planking, I figured out what I did wrong compared to my other models which involved miss sanding the taper of the planks. About 50% would have been a better choice and bit better quality control on the taper to get it more uniform. Too late to fix the starboard side so I did the best I could and it's now planked. Live and re-learn. I plan on painting per my previous post but still deciding on "artistic" changes like not painting over the keel but... still thinking about it. I took the easy way out on the remaining planks and just cut each one in half and planked a way. Now comes the sand-fill-sand-rinse-repeat until everything is nice and smooth. After spending several hours cleaning up the shop, here's the progress photo of the starboard side.
  14. Would an ultra sonic type cleaner work well for these? I've seen small units for small parts cleaning in the past but not sure if they still make them.
  15. I wasn't aware of that and made an assumption (bad thing).
  16. You might do a search on some of the 3-D printing sites that offer figures. If I'm recalling correctly, they can be scaled but probably cost extra.
  17. I was thinking the same thing, Keith., but using a 10" long or so piece of ply with some sandpaper glued to it.
  18. Looking good from here also, Mario. About ready to go whale hunting it would appear.
  19. Thanks for the knowlege. I didn't realize which holiday it was.
  20. True on both points. It does depend on the size and speed of the belt and how heavy of a "touch" one has.
  21. Welcome to MSW, Smokey. I hope you'll open a log on her once you can find some plans.
  22. I'll keep my fingers crossed on the top coat not fading the decals more.
  23. Great looking engine. I hope you'll do a log on the Camel. It'll be interesting to see it come together and then displayed with the spare engine.
