Hi John. Goto your profile and click on "Edit Profile". Down near the bottom is the place to add your NRG number and a toggle to set it for being a member. After that's done, PM James, the admin so he can set your insignia.
-
Hmm... the map shows only 5 members in that area but then, many don't add their locations. There's 3 clubs listed on the NRG page.. but I know nothing about them.

Welcome to MSW. I suggest you open a build log in the kit area as it's a great way to get help and meet other modelers.

I just saw your other post... so you should respond there also. Looks like the site is being reworked or maybe it's the summer holiday season so they shut it down. -
Alan, where are you headed in Oregon? There's at least one club possibly more in the northern part.

Welcome to MSW, Jared. Give some thought to build log on your Flying Fish. Since you're well into it, just do a summation of how you got to this point.

I hope the surgery goes well and they don't cancel on you. I'm expecting surgery but it's been canceled for now. <sigh> Thanks for the comments on my being busy. Not as busy as I'd like but I'm trying to focus more on the ships than other things. I'm no help on those boats. You might try asking in the research area. More builders will see it and you may very well get the info you seek. Here's a link to that area: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/13-discussions-for-ships-plans-and-project-research-general-research-on-specific-vessels-and-ship-types/ You might also do a search here for those ships. It'll entail a bit of drilling down as you get hits.

Are those actually masts? They're near the outboard of the deck. Cargo or net booms? Is there any other information about this vessel?
-
There were two Parrot Rifles on top as launched in 1859, but they soon disappeared after the first cruise. One at the bow and one at the stern. The Marines did have some smaller guns that could be mounted on deck if needed. Due to the way the Constellation folks way back in the early 1900's played, many of the original frigate drawings "disappeared" or were changed. As for the restoration of the 1859 Constellation, as I understand it, they ran out of money so didn't finish putting the guns on their fore and aft positions.

Semper Fi brother. USMC 66-70. I hope you'll start a log on your lifeboat. It's a great way to meet others and get help.

They'd be stored there, Jack as there was no large opening as on most ships prior to her being built. Getting them in and out of the hatches would have been a problem if not impossible.
-
I would think not on anything being attached to the yards in stowage. For one thing, they used the yards as needed and would cut them down if needed.

Welcome to MSW.

Interesting to say the least. You might be right about the shorter breaching rope. It wouldn't need to come back too far and the "training tackle" would be used to adjust the azimuth. A 30 to 32 pound shot wouldn't be a problem doing it that way although the gunners would be more exposed to small arms fire. If it were one of the 75 (?) or 100 pounders that probably would be a problem. I'm trying to remember where I saw it but some of those vessels had "armored" hatches which were closed for loading. Could have been one of the builds here or maybe out at the Warfare History Network. It might have even been at Fort Donaldson (which I visited many times a few decades ago) as plunging fire did a lot of damage to the ironclads as they were armored on top.

Your last post threw me for a curve. I thought you were showing the real thing until I looked really close.
-
Beautiful. I hate to ask this but are the breech ropes correct? It appears that they might be too short for the gun to recoil. Since this on is pretty much buried it may not really be seen or noticed when finished.

A quick search turns up a pretty good sized list of builds. It has been from all accounts a pretty popular model.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
