  1. Since this appears to be a kit and not a scratch build, I moved it. If it's just the Sterling plans, let me know and I'll move it back.

  3. CDW, Have a look at OC's Battle of Waterloo topic. He does a great job of describing how he does figures.
  4. I grew up on the plastics also with good instructions. However, things have changed. I finally did a plastic kit after about 30 years of not doing them and was very surprised as the instructions were basically pictures with numbers per illustration showing order and icons showing.... glue or no glue. But I muddled through it . Sadly, many wooden kits have gone that way. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the level of detail in Chris Watton's Vanguard Models kit for the HMS Sphinx. If you'll do a search here (upper right hand corner) and use key words like ("model shipways" and "longboat" you should see a bunch of hits. The other way is to go to the kit area and there indexes listing all or almost all the kit builds. If you decide to build it, do open a log as it's a great way to get help and meet other builders.
  5. Only happy? I'd be jumping up and down and shouting. Beautiful display.
  6. Thanks for looking in everyone. So far so good in the build. I'm doing some minor shaping on the bow and stern and saving most of the final shaping for the fairing during planking. Once that's done, I'll start getting the bulkheads installed. Thanks for the info, James. I'll just park all the supplementary plans for now unless I need them. And that's excellent news on the brass. I don't like the chemical solvents unless I can do them outside or with all the windows open. With the fires covering this valley I'm in with heavy smoke, that's not really an option.
  7. That does put things in perspective seeing them side by side. Normally, we only see them as individual photos.
  8. Great news on the surgery, Michael. I hope and wish for the best outcome.
  9. Translation: I would like to thank you very much for this opportunity to look at it. There is hardly anything to add to the admiration for the perfection in craftsmanship, text, documentation and your pictures. A huge thank you, Gerhard Gerhard, Dies ist eine englischsprachige Website. Bitte verwenden Sie Google oder andere Websites, um zu übersetzen und zu posten. Dankeschön.
  10. Regarding the build up bulwarks. I have suspected that ships with carronades operated at closer ranges and therefore very susceptible to small arms fire. The built up bulwarks offered a bit of protection or at least concealment and some degree of comfort to those on deck serving the guns.
  11. While "small" compared to some, this was a very nasty storm. Glad you got through it in good shape.
  12. Thanks for the likes and comments. And yes, adult beverages are permitted.... Did a bit more tonight and built up the stern. Both will need rough fairing but I'll do that tomorrow. Eyes are getting tired. I'm still sorting out plans. Not sure what they're all for but hopefully I'll figure it out.
  13. And we don't follow you around the web and keep track of what you're up to also.
  14. Nice, precise work on the spider bands, Pat.
  15. If you have a hobby shop that carries Vallejo paints, they make a matt varnish.
  16. It's coming along nicely, OC. I like the little touch of the brick in the pond. I gather you'll put some more on the ground under the places they were hacked out?
  17. Well, I've sorted as best I can (not much table top space in shop), and have started building. So far, so good. In a little bit, I'll build up the bow and then let the glue dry on both while reading ahead on the instructions. Once I feel it's cured out, I'll start the shaping needed.
  18. Nah.. I've done two kits without bashing, one with a heavy bash and then started scratch building.
  19. What are you cutting the brass on? Wood? A mat? Try using a piece of glass. You'll go through blades quick but it works well.
  20. I'll add this link in addition to Jack'a info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military_aircraft_national_insignia
  21. Thanks Glenn Er, yes Grant, the bar in the corner is always open. It came this morning. I've been inventorying everything and it all looks good to me. Still have a few more sheets to look at. Minimal surface char on the wood and a pile of brass photo etch and other parts. I won't do a parts photo session as there's plenty of those around. I'm trying to figure out where to hang all the plans that come with this. I'm also a bit surprised at the size. She's a bit smaller than my Licorne or the Belle Poule. but then, they had about 6 more guns or so. As for the photo etch... does anyone know if there's a coating on them? I'll still put them in vinegar for a bit to add some "tooth" and clean with alcohol before painting. Just need to sort out if I need to set up an acetone bath. I'll start assembly as soon as I'm done inventorying. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with this kit. The box... big and heavy.
  22. George, You really should open a build log for your CA. I note you've posted photos apparently to the gallery but not in an album. The gallery is for finished models not a build log. As it is now, your photos are scattered all over in there and not in one place.
  23. If you're planking, then there's no need to make it mirror smooth because it will be hidden and also glue doesn't seem to work too well on those kind of surfaces. As for the likes... I like what I'm seeing. It's very well done.
