A critique of the works of Nicolaes Witsen
mtaylor replied to Philemon1948's topic in Nautical/Naval History
This part strikes me. Is it possible that Nicolaes basically finished or edited the book that his father actually wrote? -

I have a question on the MDF for this model. I have some concerns over fumes and also fragility being as there's a bunch of grades of MDF where some just crumbles by looking at it. Is there a coating that can be put on it to seal and perhaps strengthen it? James doesn't mention it so maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid or nuts?

Welcome to MSW, Dodge. As for for the AL kit, it's probable that it never will be released after all this time of them promising it. It's a good idea to start "small" rather than jumping right in with a huge kit. Closets around the world have first time models tucked away out frustration by the builder. Do start a log when you are ready to begin. It's the best way to get help and meet other model builders.

Welcome to MSW, TrueNorth. When you're ready, do start a build log as it'll be a great way to share your experience, get advice, and meet other builders. BTW, is there a name we can address you by other than your screen name? And tell us where you are as there are probably members or possibly a club near you.

If you think the adjustment screws are "moving" from vibration, next time you get them locked in after adjusting the table, brush a bit of fingernail polish on the screw/thread joint. If it moves,, the polish will be cracked.

Stevinne, have a look at the Vanguard Models and also Syren Models builds here. From what I've heard, they have some of the best instructions and the designers are here on MSW.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
