  1. Nice planking. Keep up the good work. And yes, patience is a virtue in this hobby.
  2. Hi Dennis, If the fabric stiffener doesn't work, (I'm guessing it's starch?) There's always hair spray, clear matte lacquer, or what Popeye suggested. I use the glue and water mix with success. Also, take an empty beer or soda can (aluminium/aluminum) and cut it open and shape to the way you want to flag to flutter. Lay the flag on the can and coat with the stiffener that works best. When dry, the flag will come off in the same shape as the can.
  3. David, Those and spindle speed are always the first things I check. In this case, the gib screws on the saddle were loose which is weird since they originally (by me) were locktited into position. And <mild rant on> what kind of idiot designs a handle on a rotating screw without a slot and key or pin or serrated shaft and handle? <mild rant off> The cross-slide handle came loose again on the shaft even thought the securing screw was tight. Minor ongoing issue that will be solved by drilling a through hole in the handle and shaft and putting a pin. Thanks Richard, Ebony gets steam, lots of heat, and invectives. But it sure looks great when it's on.
  4. Tim, I use the MM instructions (crap basically) along with the LittleMachineShop, Sherline, and others. Sherline is one that gave me the idea to mod the mill for higher rpm. The mill I have isn't really covered by any site and has apparently been discontinued.
  5. Latin, John??? Thanks. Pat, I've got a pile of docs from both the manufacturer's and the web. They all help but I seem to run into things that aren't in the books. That gib adjustment was one of them. I've a similar issue on the lathe.. somethings causing chatter and I suspect it's just one of the gib screws (there's 3 per side just on the main cross slide alone). Or one of the other gib screws. Nenad, I'm digging....
  6. Pete, It's not just MSW. I've seen it on other forums also... ME takes their share of "bashing" as does AL, Occre, Caldercraft, etc. I can't think of any who don't. Reasons vary and usually it's either for very good reasons or preferences of the builder coming out. Bad castings, bad wood, not enough materials, fictitious histories, sparse to just plain wrong instructions are just a few of the things that irk modelers. I realize you're not an employee but don't take it personally.
  7. No problem, Nigel. I just feared that some of the members would think that Como was the name of a ship.
  8. Thanks for the nice comments and the "Likes". The one thing (ok... one of the things) I've learned is not to trust tools. The mill was acting funny in that the tool/motor, etc. would sometimes drop slightly in the "Z" axis. Nothing is mentioned in what passes for a manual for this thing except in the parts list... there's a gib screw. Adjusted it and no more unwanted movement. I'm now going over the table saw... found some minor issues and the lathe also needs some attention. By the way, the build board is finished. So... as soon as the tools are in good repair and pass inspection, I'll start the keel, stem, deadwood assembly. Now to decide on either cherry or boxwood for those and will look best with the swiss pear/ebony* planking. Hmm.... ??? *Yeah.. I'm going to go with the ebony again. Just because it's there and I want to master it.
  9. Words fail me on this model... even the trunnion straps are bone. Unbelievable.
  10. NIgel, I suggest nuking the work "Como" in the title... make it more generic such as: Euromodel Kit Discussion - all kits
  11. Thanks Nigel. You beat me to it.
  12. Therein Is part of issue I have with Proxxon... size. Not much movement in any axis. I do love the speed as there's really not any mills straight off the shelf that hit that kind of rpm, sadly. And, any mods to up the speed, usually kill the warranty as eating bearings becomes a real possibility. <rant on> Why can't we have a good size, good table movement, good head movement, AND rpm? Oh.. and accuracy of movement. I saw a HF unit that had so much slop in the table movement, it was useless. <rant off> <walks away grumbling and kicking scrap wood>
  13. Looks to me like the card stock is working much better for you. Interesting build, to say the least.
  14. 2mm????? Hmm... guess I ought to play with my planer as think it will do a better job than my thickness sander. It's either that or sell both the planer and sander and buy a Byrnes sander... decisions, decisions.
  15. Super nice bulwarks, Nenad.
  16. Ronald, There's two Mantua Vic builds in the log area. Not sure if it's the same one or not. One builder finished his, but has been online here since the middle of 2013. The other build, I'm not sure about....
  17. Looks interesting, Jay. The only thing I can see that raised my eyebrows was motor size.. 250 W vs 500 W for many others. Definitely get the tool package as the accessories can get pricey really fast.
  18. Thanks Mark. It had me pulling my hair out since most places that carry the blades require a phone order and not on-line. Once I started snooping around the site, I handed my credit card to the Admiral for safe-keeping.
  19. Steve, Depending on the type of glue, you have some options... For PVA - use isopropyl alcohol.. at least 75% or higher. For CA - use acetone. For Epoxy - a lot of cutting with a knife and invectives. Do test first on a piece of MDF to ensure that it doesn't destroy the MDF. Hope this helps.
  20. Remco, This is above and beyond... a working drawer. Wow!!! And just to satisfy the curious (me), what's going in the drawer? No, don't tell us. I'm still shaking my head over the working drawer.
  21. Pat, Next round of peanuts are on me. Mark, Thanks. I'm applying everything I learned from Version 1.0. Some of the fittings will hit the trash, some won't. I'm testing myself again. I still have a pile more work to do before the framing gets here, like keel, etc. And if there's time, fiddle with the lathe and turn some cannon.
  22. First time on a lathe???? <walks over to bench... tosses lathe in trash> Sweet looking mortar. Wood? Brass? Enquiring minds and all that.
  23. We've had some discussions about table saws, blades, adapters, etc. I read the Byrnes info on Hobbymill, and also all the posts here. After scratching about the internet and Google looking for supplier for the Thurston Saw Blades, I found this site: https://www.walterhammond.com/storefrontCommerce/ Since I have the adapter and can use those blades on my MicroMart saw... seems like a darn good price compared to MM. I'm still digging about for other nice bits of tools/tooling. Disclaimer: All the usual... I'm just a customer.
