Hi Igor Four centimetres in length! Well, in actual fact, my Mystic motor yacht is 5 cms in length; a mere giant in comparison. I tell ya, it takes some serious skills to do what you're doing. Nicely done! Cheers Patrick

Woohoo Igor Great to see you back. I still can't get over how tiny she is, not to mention how much detail you've put into her. Lovely stuff! Cheers Patrick

Hi Ken I was reminded of your model when someone mentioned making card models earlier today. It made me think of your ship and so, I thought I'd check in to see if you've been able to make any more progress so far? Cheers Patrick

Hi Frank Many thanks. I have to admit that when I put one of my miniatures against one of old RC yachts, I think the same thing. The RC boats are absolutely massive in comparison. I hope you're well and that your next project is coming along soon. All the best! Patrick

Hi Bill ...pretty darn hard to find anything to find fault with in your ship. Love your work. Everything's finely crafted, precise and beautifully detailed. Really, really nice! Cheers Patrick -
First attempt, Piet??? Now I feel even more inadequate! LOL

Hi Mike Long time, no hear! I'm just wondering how you're going and if you've been able to get back to your Colin Archer lately? Cheers Patrick

Hi George - Yep, those shows were great, even despite the bad acting and predictable storylines. I can always remember being amazed at the models and how realistic they were able to make them look. Ahh, the good ole days! Hi Michael - I'd love to build the real thing one day. Alas, I can't really see that happening any time soon. I gotta admit, whenever I think of what you've been able to do with your Maria, well, it just makes me dream. You're a lucky man, for sure! Thanks Denis - You know, skimping, or no skimping, I actually doubted whether I could build Mystic. I don't have Igor's skills at the super-mini scales, but I was able to build all the internal details, which proves that you never know what you can achieve until you try. You're also right about having to elongate the deck pillars on Magellan's superstructure. For some reason, I must've miscalculated the height of the cabin walls, which meant that the pillars didn't actually meet like they're supposed to. I guess at this scale, the cumulative effect of this error has meant that, I'll just have to cheat and elongate the pillars. I don't really have any other option, apart from rebuilding the whole superstructure. And...I ain't doing that; that's for sure! Hi Greg - Mmmm, a model of Spindrift, now that's food for thought! It'd actually be quite a fun project, but getting hold of the plans would be hard, I guess.

Hi Greg OMG! That brings back so many memories I loved that show when I was a kid, especially the space ship that they travelled in. There were other great shows at the time which had fantastic models, such as Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and the Thunderbirds. Boy, I'm getting old...

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
