Hey - not only is it good to see this B-17 in progress but good to see other musicians as well! My main instrument is Bass but I dabble with guitar as well. My favorite of my basses are a Fender Tele and an Ibanez. Here's a pic with my Ibanez.

Thats why I love this forum   so much  of different talents  that  come together   "Priceless"

  2. Thank you for  looking into that for me EG,   I was thinking   - I  have hand painted the bottom wings on my Mossie and hasn't turned out too bad,  so I should be able to hand paint the Bottom of the Seafire  to the same standard  - cheaper as well   just a few quid (UK pounds).

I have the Dark Grey rattke can I need  I brought that months ago as I wasn't sure about the color on my mossie.

So I will order a tin of XF21  off flea bay.

Just caught up with your Mossie build thread OC. So sorry to learn about your paint troubles.

I don't want to muddy the water here, but I have to say, I use lacquer based primer on almost every model I build. As a rule of thumb, if you can smell the paint after the application of it, it's still gassing out. When you can't smell it, it's gassed out. Simple as that. I never have an issue with any other paint over a lacquer primer, provided it's gassed out. My favorite primer is either Tamiya (in the bottle) or Mr Surfacer (in the bottle) reduced with Mr Hobby 400 Leveling Thinner. Tamiya spray primer is good, too. Just make sure it's gassed out (smell it).

Tamiya bottled paints are notoriously bad for brushing. They need a retarder added when brushing. When I use their bottled clear, I always thin it considerably with Mr Hobby Leveling Thinner (40% paint to 60% thinner), sprayed on with an airbrush. It just does not give good results brushed from the bottle. I know it's too late now, but just for future reference.

    Thanks Craig,   much appreciated.

I've always wanted a Hoffner.......a hollow body bass would be cool.   there is a story about Paul McCarthy and his Hoffner basses......part of it is that most of the Beatles music was done with a Fender Jazz bass and a Rickenbacker.......he was given a Hoffner bass,  but he didn't like it,  so it stayed in the closet.   Hoffner was disappointed that he wasn't play'in it,  so they made him another.  very nice with gold hardware.   he sent it to a luthier and had it totally stripped,  blonde finish with standard hardware.   meanwhile,  the bass that was in the closet,  mysteriously disappeared!  it was gone for some time....a friend of Paul's was watching an auction in japan,  when he caught sight of it.   he immediately called Paul and told him about it.    the bass now sits in a London museum.   I have the article somewhere......I have another article about a fellow that collects hollow body basses......kinda interesting too ;)    I got to play a fretless bass one time........sounds almost like a stand up.

I still record stuff  but not by bass    that went a long time ago,   my main musical interest is Digital  recording Synths  VST,   I have a bout 4 on my laptop,  I record  amd mix  sections in a  laptop device called  Wavepad   its quite good   you can save as Mp3  or  WAV  files,   I have some of my stuff  that I have done on my own  and some with a  few musician  friends    stored in Bandcamp.

I have to be in the mood though  as a lot of the time im to dry to get my head round making music  and other times it just flows.

Great save so far! I’ll have to keep your resolve to salvage it in mind for the inevitable mistakes that I do in the future! I’m glad to see the restoration; it was and is again looking very nice!

Thank you kindly,  I will admit  it nearly  took off   out the back door, but I counted to Ten instead  stomped my feet  cursed a bit  - and felt a lot better,  I did get a few words from the admiral though  along the lines off  "Why make them if they make you so upset"

in one of my bass books,  there is a bit of advice that could pertain to just about anything......even modeling.   it's quite simple:   learn all you can......then forget it an play  ;)

A friend once told me   "Practice and practice till you can do it with your eyes shut"   wont work with modeling though....

yep......I own three of them......and they all have their unique sound :)   I favor flatwound strings....very quiet on the changes ;)   that looks like an Ibanez......never had the pleasure to play one.   you would not imagine the dust that was on that bass.......it's a no name brand that the admiral bought me when I was taking lessons.  haven't played for a good couple of years now..........should get back into it ;)   glad I was able to find that other part.   now all I need to do is wait for the wheels to come in.......still can't believe I can't find that hub part.......I've torn everything apart around my desk.   my computer is a lot happier for it  :)

    Yep  was an Ibby  SR300.

  8. Lots of nice progress there Denis   carpet monsters do exsist  - they move around our site  at free will  so we never see them,  they have a cumming disguise   and  blend in well to carpets/rugs  even hard flooring, just dont tread on one  "have  heard you could loose a leg"

Did I hear you say  "Bass Guitar"     I used to own this bad boy  a good few years back.

  9. A bit more progress   - firstly I sprayed the first Ocean Grey  coat  then put the fuselage away in the box to dry,   then I continued  with the wing  - applying a few coats of Black by hand,    this went on withought  event and had about 4 layers.   I then touched up a few small areas in Black and Cockpit Green,  I finished off  by painting flat Alum  in the Two  wing camera housings.

I'm almost exclusively an acrylic guy myself, odor/VOCs being the reason. I still have some Floquil primer I use now and then, but let it dry at least ten days before anything goes over it. Dry to the touch means nothing with lacquer; you have to wait until there is no residual odor.

Although I usually mostly Vallejo for flat, if I want a super dead flat finish I will use Testor's Dullcoat lacquer as my final finish, even over acrylics. It does work, but the only way to apply it safely that I have found is super light airbrush mist coats. I still generally try to avoid mixing systems and really find that there is generally nothing I can't do with just acrylics. For example, Model Masters acrylics come in a wide color range and availability, how ever their adhesion to bare styrene is abysmal. I've been burnt numerous times by them over the years, and now will only use them over primed plastic. For primer though I find I don't need anything more than whatever random light gray Tamiya acrylic I have handy. I've never had any paint come off with tape when doing that.

    Good luck OC.

    Thanks Joe.
