Harlequin, the post is in response to the apparent 'troubling concerns' a lot of builders are confused by, they obviously want the accuracy. I'd leave my timber's their natural colour. Personally I'll never build a first rater, I prefer smaller more graceful ships.
same here Bob......never coloured any of my timbers either.

Me....I am not bothered one bit about the accuracy of the kits I build...whether one colour is right or wrong or if this bit is right or wrong...My corel Greyhound and Victory have had little or no modifications to the materials supplied. Me I just enjoy my hobby. I am not a historian so details don't bother me.....I go to my workshop and just build, sometimes get frustrated and annoyed when things don't go right but it keeps be busy and whether my ships or accurate or not I really don't care.....I have a model that looks great to me.
Is the real Victory accurate?....I don't know.....not a lot of people seem to know...so I accept the Victory in Portsmouth as having been a great battleship and historically important ....me I accept Her in all her glory.....right or wrong....I don't care....I don't suppose She does either.
Be thankful She is still with us......even if most of Her has been replaced over the hundreds of years of Her existence.

Be careful though when you thin the false keel not to remove to deeply or you will have a very thin false keel. The first and second planking can also be sanded back to achieve the right result.

Hi Harlequin
In your post from may 14th 2013 (let the planking begin) you seem to have done something to the area on the false keel below the transom. What was it and why did you do it? Thanks.
Cheers
Pieter
if you look at the pic of the first planking in the next pic the first planks fit just below the false keel where the rudder will fit....this is due to me having removed or thinned some of the false keel in the area you mention.

I have trimmed the keel a little to accommodate the 2 layers of planking. The first planking has also been thinned in the corresponding area to ensure a nice smooth even contour down to the area where the rudder will fit.

That is a handy looking lathe sir.
I extended the minicraft lathe attachment with two longer stainless steel bars. The original one does not extend to that length......it does the job reasonably well I just have to support the longer yards with my fingers as I sand or turn.

it is a minicraft lathe attachment....not made anymore but can be picked up on ebay…...the two rods are not long enough in the kit so i bought some stainless steel rods to extend the range of the lathe.
