You are doing an amazing job on this model of the Utrecht.  In my research of these beautiful ships, I have never personally seen before those slides for the lee boards. Nice job making those slides. Do you think that the Yacht Mary would have had such slides for the lee boards even though Mary was almost a century before Utrecht?  Have heard that the Dutch liked to stay consistent with how ships were built and designed such as the statenjachts. Looking forward to hearing from you and viewing the next update.

Hello Patrick and Brian. Many thanks for your kind words!

Brian - The Dutch have built statenjachts from the beginning of 17.century to the end of the 18. The leeboards were used in the Netherlands from the sixteens century. All drawings and paintings from this times I know shows the leeboards. Fx. van der Velde shows in teh 17.century many of this nobel ships, and all of them had leebords. Also the plans of such ships from the 18.century. Also the plans by Pieter van Zwijndregt, van Genth and others ( Maritim Museum Rotterdamm ) shows this components. And the Mary? She was a typical  dutch statenjacht. Therefore I think that she had leebords.

I think you are right in this. In that time shipwrights,, whole in Europe, I mean, were very conservative constructors.

Very nice work Hartmut,
she is showing her future shape, and details. It won't be long before she is all dressed up and ready. Didin't know we Dutch had such colourful boots/yachts, when you look at the paintings from that period, we are wearing such a depressing dress colour

Hello Carl, this colourfull design is the result of the researches which Ab Hoving and the other builders of the 1:1 Utrecht had made. I think that such wonderfull colors were usual in the baroque. Especially when the upper ten of the cityes wanted to show who they are.

Hartmut,

I went through your complete built and she is beautiful. With the scale you are building her you can add lots of details. I will leave some of those details out with my scale.

You mentioned the colors you used on her in the beginning of your built but later on you omitted that. I like the colors you used compared to what others builders have used on their jachts.

Is it possible to list them here and what color you used for what part of the ship?

I would like to use these colors on my jacht.

Thanks in advance.

Hello guys,

after a long time I am now back again in the forum. In the last three months there had been a lot of interesting jobs, two journeys and also time for modelling. But not enough time to post. With other words: time for modelling or time for posting. But now I will show you Utrecht today and of course some of the work steps .

Many thanks to you guys for all the "likes" and kind words.

Here are some pics of the current state of the model. The decoration figures are made of polymer clay. To make the figurehead was very fiddly. The lion of the full sized Utrecht in my eyes looks like a cartoon. But a very nice one. Iwasn't able to reproduce it in my model.

Beautiful model especially in scale you built it, well done. I especially like the figures you added on the deck, it makes the model come alive.

The bigger the scale the more details and you did an excellent job at that.

Thank you, guys for all your kind words.

There are only the stern lantern and the decorations of the gun ports to make to finish Utrecht. Therefore I have started the next project, an elizabethan galleon. It may be a model of Drakes Golden Hind. How Golden Hind looked exactly is unclear. I will use some plans I did find in two old german modeling books.

Okay now I will start the new build log.

I'm coming very late to this build log but I have to say great job! I love Statenjachts they are beautiful little ships.  Yours is a perfect example of their beautiful design.

I bottled one some years ago and gave it away at a charity auction.  One of these days I'll have to build me another one.
