I was not happy with boat version 1 so I went for version 2 which came off the plug as can be seen below. I still need to add ribs and such. we will see if there is a version 3post-115-0-61928500-1468781185_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-19719400-1468781245_thumb.jpg

OK, I have managed to get boat number 2 ( life boat ) version 1 finished. I think it's a keeper!  So now I have both boat shells done. Now comes the easy part, adding the detail to the work boat and making a cover for the life boat.post-115-0-41228600-1469763379_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-43496700-1469763445_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-81054900-1469763514_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-00997000-1469763578_thumb.jpg

Thanks Patrick, I think I can make these two work and am glad to get them done to this point.  They are fussy little buggers to build.

You sure have that right.  I'm trying to build a couple for the Pequot.  Yours are great.

Bob,  You have shown us all what you can do so no doubt your boats will turn out great as well.

Like the work boat I ended up making another plug and building a shell on it. If it was a real boat it would leak like crazy, but this is a " paint grade boat ".  I am getting a small collection of them, but still need the practice and improvement. First two photos are of lifeboat version 2 still on the plug.post-115-0-37808000-1470508918_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-73412800-1470509011_thumb.jpg Two more of version 2 off the plug.post-115-0-78466600-1470509071_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-40102800-1470508839_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-83539200-1470509194_thumb.jpg My growing collectionpost-115-0-06843900-1470509134_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-26105400-1470509261_thumb.jpg And my plugs which you can see the different shapes.post-115-0-54225100-1470509341_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-22837900-1470509403_thumb.jpg

Since I now have boats built for my project, it follows that I will need boat davits. The only info I have on these is what I can pick out in the photos I have. These are some shots of what I came up with. I still need to add cleats, limit strap and a collar for locking in place. I have temporary pins in pivot points at this time. Every thing will get cleaned up and blackened.post-115-0-33138900-1470690127_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-77454800-1470690205_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-56701700-1470690265_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-20469000-1470690323_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-34456800-1470690381_thumb.jpg

Thanks for stopping by John,  I did spend some time in the shipyard the last few days. I put together two storage lockers that will be placed on the main deck just forward of the cabin.post-115-0-63167300-1471147668_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-41058300-1471147543_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-61368600-1471147608_thumb.jpg

Early on ( not early enough ) with my build I realized I had better think about how I was going to mount this when finished.  I had not made any provisions for this either. On the same lines I had not intended to out fit the engine room. Since I did outfit the engine room I thought well might as well add a couple LED lights. I do not how much it will help in being able to see down into that space. I want to mount the switch  and battery some where outside the display case and in the base board. As for placement of the pedestals I had to have access on the inside of the hull. This is what I got.I played around on the lathe and turned these brass blobs :) Had a friend mill the keel slots for me.post-115-0-26306800-1471289531_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-80385800-1471289594_thumb.jpgpost-115-0-67844600-1471289664_thumb.jpg Now I need to find a nice piece of wood for the top of the base. It will be layered I am thinking.

Well, It's been awhile since I posted a update. I have not gotten a lot done is why :P  Have been working on the boat davits but nothing to show yet. Did manage to put together the spot light mounted on the wheel house roof. First picture is of spotlight parts and the inside wheelhouse control.post-115-0-40710800-1476645803_thumb.jpg This is how the spotlight looks like on the cabin top. sorry for the dark picture.post-115-0-06656500-1476645870_thumb.jpg

Steve,

That's lovely bit of work for the spotlight.  The control is very realistic.

Steve,

Nice model! Your engine room needs a couple of huge 3 to 4 feet long open end wrenches and perhaps a pry bar 5 ft long. The whaleback steamship SS Meteor with a 2000 ihp triple expansion engine has some as long as 6 ft. These engines had a tendency to lock up with a piston on "dead center.and these tools were needed to roll the engine past this position. Some engines had a flywheel with a number of holes around its periphery. A pry bar could be stuck in these holes. Meteor has a heavy disc pierced with holes on its Stephenson reversing gear. Hanging nearby is a huge spanner wrench that fits the holes in this disc. This allows the slide valves to be manipulated to accomplish the same purpose.
