Triton cross section 1:48 by rafine

Recommended Posts

Prior to doing any planking of the lower deck, I planked the interior of the hull up through the gun deck clamps, including treenailing. This planking was all done in boxwood. I then did the waterway in boxwood and a fairly small section of the lower deck planking in holly. This planking was also treenailed. After the planking was done, I finished the hull and deck planking and the top of of the unplanked deck framing with Wipe-on Poly. I'm not sure whether i didn't do more deck planking because I was lazy or because I liked the look of the framing -- probably some of each.

Now it's on up to the gun deck.

Bob:
Aw, cmon!!! :) Plank the entire thing and cover up all of the framing. That is what I did on my old cross section. :)

Looking great, Beyond excellent, Bob.    Next time you do a cross-section, build two.  One fully planked and fitted out and the other just in frame.  ;)  I go quietly now... there's man with a big butterfly net and white coat with extra-extra long sleeves waiting for me.

Thanks Ben. Sorry, I must have missed your post.

Framing for the gun deck is now done except for cutting and fitting the hanging knees and making and fitting the pillars. None of the framing has been given any finish at this point. The gun deck framing, like the lower deck framing, was built entirely off the model. I am really happy with the method. The photos show the framing at various stages of completion. The last is with the framing temporarily in place on the model.

I have now decided that I will do enough deck planking to allow for placement of guns on both sides. The waterways and deck planking will be done after the framing with knees and pillars is installed.

The gun deck framing is now installed, with it's hanging knees, pillars and waterways. No finish will be applied until after the deck planking is on. The knees were cut from boxwood sheet and shaped and fitted before the deck framing was installed, but were not mounted until afterwards. The pillars were made from boxwood strip. Because I don't have a lathe, I opted for a somewhat simplified shape that I could do with files and sandpaper. They were cut oversize and fitted and installed after the deck framing was in place. The waterways were made from redheart strip and nicely hide any gaps from the fitting of the knees. Prior to installing the deck framing, I also added a bit of deck planking to the lower deck to serve as a base for the ladder down from the gun deck.

The gun deck planking will be next up. As I said earlier, I've decided  to mount guns on both sides and will plank at least enough of the deck to support the guns. That probably won't be for a while, as we're going to be going north a few times to visit the kids and grandkids.

Bob:

The framing and pillars look good. Everything looks very clean and sharp.

When I built my cross section (ten years ago now), I hand turned my pillars on the end of a stick of wood, using files, sandpaper etc. It takes a bit longer, I suppose, but it was a lot of fun for me to do it by hand. I also made my knees out of cuttings from my maple tree. That was interesting and it gave a great amount of satisfaction to make knees like that. Been even better if I had fitting them properly. :)

Thanks Russ, Grant and Pete. Like so many other tasks on the model, doing these items by hand is more tedious, but also very satisfying and even fun.

  • 2 weeks later...

After returning from my trip, I did the deck and bulwark planking on the port side. The gun deck planking, like the lower deck, is holly with the caulking simulated by pencil on one edge and end of each plank. I then treenailed the deck planking. The bulwark planking is redheart. Before doing the bulwark planking, I lined the inside of the gun ports, also with redheart. No finish has been applied yet on either the deck or bulwark planking. I'm now repeating this process on the other side.
