Sanding sealer or even a light primer will work also Nigel. Anything that has light colour as a topcoat, I'll usually prime first which helps the colour as in your case, yellow and blue stand out.

I think that I mentioned a little while ago that the gun carriages supplied by the kit were hopeless - not to scale and cheap and nasty.  So I decided to try and rescale from John McKays book and scratch build some, although they aren't perfect by any means I'm pretty happy with them.  The main issue for me is the gun colour.  I didn't think matt was right so I've used Smooth Hammerite.  When I get another kit I'll buy some brass tarnisher - notice I said when I get another kit!!  I'm loving this new hobby and it gets better and better.

Hi Everyone, been fairly busy over the last couple of days and completed (with a little bit of tidying up to do) the Wales and Bulwark Strakes.  The kit says to build up the strakes edge on edge, which is fine if the ship was going to be left as natural wood but as I'm painting it I decided to make it in one piece.  The Wales are also painted and I'd be interested in your opinions over the colour of the upper Wale as I've left it as natural wood colour and not matt black like the other two. Anyway here's the photo's.

Hi All, I've been busy with what seems small but time consuming stuff.  The heat here at the moment hasn't helped as we've been up around 44C (111F) for a few days now.  Hopefully this is coming down this week but it doesn't make me want to sit over a work bench!!

I made the tiller house a little while ago as per the kit instructions I didn't feel that it was good enough so I clad it with Mahogany and stained it Dark Oak and I think that it looks better.

595ce8305ca4d_88.TillerHouse(kit).JPG.76a2380e1d9003c130b9ee0057034df6.JPG595ce836e3490_89.TillerHouse(Kit).JPG.c135713d69a58e8c346b51b1ad6fa2b3.JPG

These first two are as per the kit

Now after Cladding

595ce863ad9dc_105.TillerHousecladandstained.JPG.e5ac27d1ff905a2cccfef51389105987.JPG595ce875143d0_106.TillerHouseCladandstained.JPG.6f92ab10c6609330624ee906b03f59d6.JPG

Now after staining.  I'll give it a coat of Sanding Sealer before I glue it in place.

I've also made a start on the Rudder.595ce95402c10_91.Rudder.JPG.01a869949321b846344dd9a8a772355b.JPG595ce96c54f05_92.RudderHingesandPins.JPG.b40c8c016ae32e53d46e05d9907fff3d.JPG595ce988e4937_98.RudderHingesdryfit.JPG.15b7e8607c1bba68bebf74f13c399cce.JPG595ce9aaaaae3_103.RudderHingesglued.JPG.ecc15c1b6899df5f528a03e13e971c79.JPG595ce9c1a201f_104.RudderwithHinges.JPG.9358329799e7b34c397d13327053632d.JPG

I need to tidy it up and fit the 'bolt' Heads and stain/paint as my next job.  I'm hoping to have it done and fitted before I go to England in a week or so.

Cheers

Nigel

Hi Nigel

Am following your build and am impressed with how she is coming along. I have already decided to do the Bounty as my next build....... I already hinted to the Captain what I want for Christmas!

The paint work is beautiful and those cannons have come up a treat. Keep up with the postings.

Thank you for your comments Fernando.  I'm pretty happy with how she's coming along but as for the paint I see far more errors every time I take a photo!!

I'm off back to England next week for the summer and my son has bought me an airbrush kit and compressor for my 60th birthday so I'm already looking forward to playing with that.  The only problem will be convincing the customs people that I don't have a bomb in my suitcase!!

Too right.  Hired a house with an indoor swimming pool for the whole family so in the words of my son I intend to 'smash it', but not the house obviously.  Congrats on the big 60.

Greetings, Nigel

Just finished reading through your blog--an ambitious first build, and it looks great. I'll be following along.

Enjoy our time w/ the family.

Thank you Mark for your kind words.  Sometimes I wonder whether she is too ambitious for a first build but I am making a lot of mistakes and one thing I have learnt in life if that you learn more from them than anything so I'm soldiering on and loving it.  However, I might take a different view when I get to the rigging.

Welcome on board and thank you for your time.

As I'm going to be silent for a few weeks I thought I'd better get some work done!  So here is my latest series of Photos for the log.

I had some difficulty with the pins but they are all on.  I have painted the lower portion white I forgot to take a photo.

I put some dowls in the mast hole and laid out all the deck gear (dry) so when I come back in September that will be my job then.

The kit called for the brass etched background to be Black but John MacKays book shows red, so red it is.

Hi Guys, back from my annual trip to good old England and I had a great time with the family and Grandchildren but now I'm ready to get back in the shipyard.  Had a 20kg case in the hold of the plane full of modeling goodies and not a single item of clothing!  Check out my newest purchase -

IMG_2405.JPG.adb2bdbd7fe05f2b744d41ce806c7772.JPG

Really looking forward to trying this out.  I've bought a very cheap solid hull Bluenose kit so I can practice on that before I use it for painting the Bounty.

I hope all my followers have had a great summer and I hope to be posting some 'proper' work soon.

Cheers

Welcome back Nigel and glad to hear your had a great time in the UK and your birthday celebrations! I'm looking forward to your continuing build log as well as how well your airbrush compressor works for your already good Bounty build to date.

I'm now .on holidays and won't be back till the end of September. Had a great day in Stockholm visiting the Vasa museum. When I get enough build experience will no doubt give that ship a go. I see from other build logs that it can take anything up to 2  years!!!!

Looking forward to heading back to Sydney to continue my build of the Norfolk.

Cheers.......Fernando

Welcome back home Nigel :)

Thank you Mustafa, it's nice to be warm again but unfortunately when I try to get on with modeling the sweat from my brow is causing me a few problems!!  Maybe I'll have to go slowly till we get below 30 degrees C.

When I was over in the UK I bought some 'Blue Stuff'.  If you've never heard of it or used it check it out on YouTube.  Basically I bought it to replicate items such as the figurehead so I could practice on it as I've never done any close miniature painting before.  Anyway here are some photos showing what I did with it - melt the blue Thermo Plastic in boiling water; wrap it around the metal figurehead and let it set (about 10mins); take the figurehead out of the mould; mix some Milliput and push it into the mould; leave to set and remove the replica.  The beauty is that the Blue Stuff can be used over and over again - just melt it in boiling water - magic!
