Ship paintings

I’m doing watercolors myself, from time to time. I had done watercolor at college and used Arches paper. The Arches brand paper available today is different, it used to have a lovely sour smell when it got wet. Now it is different and also appears to take the paint differently too.

what brand of paper are you using? I’m trying to settle on a typ I can live with but so far nothing appeals to me, they all absorb/don’t absorb the paint differently.

Perhaps my favorite sea story is Monsarrat's "The Cruel Sea" (and the associated stories compiled in "Three Corvettes").  Your North Atlantic convoy paintings really convey the atmosphere of the events he describes.  Thanks again for sharing.

I really just use what I can get, certainly not the really expensive stuf, same with the paints!.

Somewhere in the Med. Two Decker heads for the sea, another refitting masts and rigging. However it is 'Dhobi' day on the Frigate with the crew's hammocks strung in the rigging to dry.

Jim,I really do like your paintings,very good indeed. "Dhobi day",that saying brought back memories for me. Over 50 years ago when I was in Aden we had a "Dhobi wallah",who did all our washing for ten bob (500 fils) a fortnight.

Thanks Dave. If you have some 'deep thinking' to do. Nothing like like sitting with a bucket of hot water between your knees, a lump of Pusser's hard and giving your 'skivvies' a good going over.!

Jim,I was a "crabfat"no pussers hard for us. But,try telling a "Dhobi wallah"not to starch and iron your "shreddies" along with your K.D. shorts and shirts was often a waste of time. Not so 'comfy'. 😢😢

Merlin and Marabu

Both are 'Windfall' yachts ,reparations from Germany after WW2 and used by British forces for adventure training and recreation. I sailed in Merlin in the 1960 Tall Ships Race.
Both were built in the 1930's and are still sailing.

Not ships but you might be interested. 

The latest of several US 8th Air Force in Europe WW2 paintings I've been doing.
These a/c were painted so they could be easily seen. They were used as markers for squadrons and groups to formate on

Possibly a scene on the Clyde in the 1950's.HMS Astute about to go along side HMS Forth, PS Waverly thrashes her way through the chop, as some old war horses gather barnacles in the background.

There is a bit of mystery about this one, but first the story, for those who dont know.
During the 'Norwegian campain, HMS Juniper a 'tree' class Trawler, was sent to escort the tanker 'Oil Pioneer' back to the uk.Their luck ran out when they met SHARNHORST, GNEISENAU ADLIRAL HIPPER and 4 destroyers!.
Juniper turned towards the enemy, hoisted her battle ensigns and opened fire with her 12 pdr. She lasted 90 minutes and there were 4 survivors
Now the mystery, I wanted to do a painting of this incredable act of bravery and defiance, so started looking around for a reference phpto of Juniper, I'm still looking, I have heard that some one has the copy right and has withdrawn all photos of her , which I find very strange.
I welcome any information or comments or even possibly a genuine photo.
With the greatest respect and in rememberance of some very brave men.

The only thing I can think of is to do an image search on tree class trawlers and see if there's enough information in those photos to get an idea of what Juniper would have looked like. Perhaps they were all built to the same design? If so, there should have been only minor differences between them.

That’s what I did. Most were built as minesweepers, but Juniper was the only Anti Sub.

The US battleships of WWI with their cage masts always look so primitive next to their British counterparts, at least to me.

Again a great looking picture Jim. I always enjoy stopping by and taking a look when you post a new one. You never disappoint.

I spent the last 5 days in Hospital.  Chest Infection that went into Pneumonia. However after excellent Treatment, I’m back home, feeling Hearty, if not quite Hale yet.

One to celebrate.

Ugh! I've had pneumonia three times, and it always takes me months to recover full lung capacity. Glad to hear you are on the mend.

Glad you are recovering from the pneumonia, Jim.  Only had one bout myself, but I've been more careful of late. The 3 days in hospital were OK while I was on the cardiac floor, but I got shipped to a freezing dungeon after my 48 hour test for heart issues. Couldn't wait to get out.
